June 22, 200620 yr I was watching Rock Honors on Vh1 the other day, and there were Queen. There was an introduction with their biograhpy and a couple of interviews, including an old one to Freddy which made me cry my ass off. Then, chaos. Paul Rodgers singing 'The Show Must Go On'???? What the fuck??? It's impossible. Something similar happened at the Grammys, when MJB sang 'One' with Bono. I know, great song, but just listening to her made me wanna puke. You can't mess with a classic, IMO. So....what do you think?
June 22, 200620 yr You definitely can not mess with a classic. Maybe the only exception would be Jimi Hendrix covering All Along the Watchtower. But he made that his own classic. Most of the time it just doesn't work. The MJB and One for example is what does not work haha. I do like when bands do covers at the lounge but not when they do it at shows or put it on cds. I just like it as a fun thing.
June 22, 200620 yr Author Maybe covers sound good when the song they're playing is not so famous and the band has the chance to make it their own.
June 22, 200620 yr Author Even when the band is no longer together or the singer is dead, classics remain. I'm offender by hearing Axl Rose is touring with the Guns....they're sooo over. Braids??? C'mon dude
June 22, 200620 yr Haha yeah he needs to get over the fact that his band is dead. Yes they were legendary but leave it at that. Don't go trying to be big again and just make a fool of yourself.
June 22, 200620 yr Author It's like.....the Backstreet Bos launching a new record. It was the 90's!! Weird fashion, pop music. You can't bring it to life now, it's the 21st century
June 22, 200620 yr Author It did? But they're not young anymore! Plastic surgeries, botox, rehab........they're not what they used to be (I used to be a fan,y'know). Ahhhh the 90's, such wonderful times
June 22, 200620 yr Author My first record was a BSB one, I was so proud of myself Forgive me, for I've sinned. I was 8, cut me some slack.
June 22, 200620 yr There has GOT to be a both option. I mean the reason some artists cover a certain song is because they chose that one above all other because they have a passion for it...good things come from a passion and respect when making a cover. Some covers definitly have potential to be just as good as the origional..if not surpassing the origional. Like 'Landslide' origional: Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac cover: Smashing Pumpkins/Billy Corgan AMAZING as a cover :stunned: and another of my favorites : 'Across the Universe' origional: The freakin' Beatles  cover: Fiona Apple... ask anyone..she beat that song to death ...it was way better than the origional. it's all about that love for a song that one artist has to an origional..or the origional artist. They do wonders with passion
June 22, 200620 yr Cant go past the originals, although there are rare occurences where the cover is better than the original..
June 22, 200620 yr Cant go past the originals' date='although there are rare occurences where the cover is better than the original..[/quote'] Totally agree with that. Sw the scissor sisters covering "comfortably numb".Wanted to cry! But i Coldplay's version of "You only Live Twice" is several times better than the original.
June 22, 200620 yr Totally agree with that. Sw the scissor sisters covering "comfortably numb".Wanted to cry! But i Coldplay's version of "You only Live Twice" is several times better than the original. 10000000000000 times better
June 22, 200620 yr Hmm... Depends of situation but I mostly prefer old original versions. First, I like old music. Second, I like everything original. But there're some songs that really sound better in a cove for me. For example, 'Hunting High and Low' - I like Coldplay version more than A-ha one. And also 'Everybody's gotta Learn Sometimes' - I prefer Beck's cover, not original version.
June 22, 200620 yr I'm surprised no-one has mentioned johnny cash's cover of hurt and personal jesus, two of the best covers I have heard in a long time.
June 22, 200620 yr mmm, interesting thread! ;) In my opinion, generally classics are always much better than covers. And the same I think about films: the original one is much better than the remake. Although I consider a good idea to make things more modern, people who are doing these covers/remakes should realize what they're doing won't be that great as the original ones. I have a theory that can be applied to nearly everything: even though you try to reproduce all the factors, situations and so on, which someone else did the the original version, you'll never achieve the same result than it. Originality plays a big role. It's just like when you had an amazing experience with someone in a place you loved... this situation will never happen anymore, although you go to the same place with the same person. You won't live so intensely those moments like you did the first time.
June 22, 200620 yr I'm surprised no-one has mentioned johnny cash's cover of hurt and personal jesus' date=' two of the best covers I have heard in a long time.[/quote'] Oh wow Johhny completely slipped my mind. He was the king of covers.
