Saddam Discusses His Nonexistent Weapons Program

Featured Replies

The Washington Times reports that Saddam Hussein sure talked a lot about a weapons program he supposedly didn't have:

Audiotapes of Saddam Hussein and his aides underscore the Bush administration's argument that Baghdad was determined to rebuild its arsenal of weapons of mass destruction once the international community had tired of inspections and left the Iraqi dictator alone.

In addition to the captured tapes, U.S. officials are analyzing thousands of pages of newly translated Iraqi documents that tell of Saddam seeking uranium from Africa in the mid-1990s.

The documents also speak of burying prohibited missiles, according to a government official familiar with the declassification process.

[...]

"The tapes show that Saddam rebuilt his program and successfully prevented the U.N. from finding out about it," he said.

There also exists a quote from the dictator himself, who ordered the tapings to keep a record of his inner-sanctum discussions, that Mr. Tierney thinks shows Saddam planned to use a proxy to attack the United States.

"Terrorism is coming ... with the Americans," Saddam said. "With the Americans, two years ago, not a long while ago, with the English I believe, there was a campaign ... with one of them, that in the future there would be terrorism with weapons of mass destruction."

[...]

So far, the tapes do not shed light on what ultimately happened to Saddam's large stocks of weapons of mass destruction. None were found by the ISG, whose director, Charles Duelfer, filed a final report in 2004.

Some pundits and recently retired military officers are convinced that Saddam moved his remaining weapons to Syria. They cite satellite photos of lines of trucks heading into the neighboring country before the invasion and the fact Saddam positioned his trusted Iraqi Intelligence Service agents at border crossings.

This news reminds me of a little-noticed Chicago Tribune analysis released at the end of last year:

After reassessing the administration's nine arguments for war, we do not see the conspiracy to mislead that many critics allege. Example: The accusation that Bush lied about Saddam Hussein's weapons programs overlooks years of global intelligence warnings that, by February 2003, had convinced even French President Jacques Chirac of "the probable possession of weapons of mass destruction by an uncontrollable country, Iraq." We also know that, as early as 1997, U.S. intel agencies began repeatedly warning the Clinton White House that Iraq, with fissile material from a foreign source, could have a crude nuclear bomb within a year.

crude nuclear bomb within a year my ass.

all of this news is on these small right wing websites that only post things that are pro war.

i wont argue back because im just not in the mood lol, maybe later

not right wing propaganda...straight from saddams mouth and from documents in his nation.....but i guess all evidence and facts that support the right arent really facts because of that.

its funny how no one else is saying anything...speechless

Actually, allthough you and I usually disagree, It's obvious that Saddam WANTED to build a nuclear programme. Yes, he was trying to aquire materiale...that is a fact, neither left or right wing based...simply a fact. But he still didn't have what the US said he had...and if on the off-chance he did, then why did the US admit to being wrong about his WMD programme? I'm not picking a fight here. I just want an honest answer...which is something you won't get from either the left or the right wing media in the States...

I like you. lol good post. i still on the fence, i think its possible he got rid of the wmd's before we invaded and i think the goverment still thinks this but since their is no solid evidence the goverment knows it would be better to admit a mistake even if its not sure its making then to go on saying saddam had wmd's without enough evidence......

I suppose it's better to cut your losses rather than increase them...you could be right. I'm not used to any politician on any side admitting they're wrong unless it's in front of a senate sub-comittee...and even then, you never know what's staged for the press...

finally someone with common sense on this board. traciemorgan, I also hope you are not one of the many conspiracy theorists on this board.

So he (and his lot) can destroy a nuclear bomb (or other such very complicated arms) and get rid of every single piece of evidence that it ever existed but not destroy a few cassettes? Hmm.

You guys are just sad man.

You don't like thinking for yourselves do you?

no.

i dont consider myself a conspiracy theorist in the least, nor do i believe that my arguements are illigitament, i just would like to see some real reports of this. And plus, we all know he wanted them, but were they capable of producing them? Bush said yes they are capable and ARE producing them. But now it seems as if it is that they WANTED to and were TRYING to get the material needed. But WMD, Weapon of Mass Destruction, is a very wide category. Some people include many other things like chemical and biological weapons (which i do believe he had in his posession before the disarmamnet) but some (like myself) include only nuclear bombs. And i dont believe he was close to producing one

You guys are just sad man.

I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure I need to be offended here. I do believe that most world Gvts. DO conspire to keep the truth from people. That does NOT make me a conspiracy theorist. I am a firm believer that if you do not research a thing from both sides, do the math, ad most of all THINK FOR YOURSELF, you won't be able to play a part in improving this planet!

For the record, I also believe in extra-terrestrial life...but that's another thread!!!lol.

I wasn't addressing you, sorry.

I have to see both sides, otherwise where are my arguments going to arise from?

Just because he was talking about it doesn't mean he had any.

Same here...I try to see both sides and use commone sense to find the truth...good call!
