I'm still a relative noob at following big soccer matches, so I wasn't exactly about to closely follow all of the games. France was one of the teams I didn't care about up to the semifinal.

And still, if there was one player who's name you couldn't escape, it was 'Zizou'. Zidane is rallying the troops. Zidane led France against Brazil. Zidane is a god-like hero. On and on and on. It was probably the only name from a team I wasn't following that stuck in my head. Sorry, but for the Italian guy being mentioned, I can't even remember who he is. Zidane was unescapable.

One moment of complete mindlessness, and the world was reminded that even god-like heros are still mere humans, subject to appauling degrees of frailty. A lesson for us all, perhaps...

Now maybe some of the people who voted would like to take their ballots back, and maybe the system will change in the future, but I do think that with the exception of those mere seconds, Zidane was the man of the tournament, and deserved the award, however embarrasing it may be.

exactly, exactly, exactly.

you couldn't be more right.

zidane deserves it, end of story.

you guys have the world cup, be happy, don't try and take away from things other teams have earned.

Iriden you talk about fair play but...

1°) Zidane is the Best Player in this World Cup that's all! On the grass, he was the better!

2°) Italy was not really fair play, I don't know what Materazzi said...

2) italy are one of the worst culprits this world cup of violating fair play :dozey:

Zidane, who came out of retirement to help France qualify for the World Cup and said he would quit soccer completely after the tournament, got 2,012 points in the vote by journalists covering the tournament. The three-time player of the year beat Fabio Cannavaro (1,977) and Andrea Pirlo (715), both of Italy.

it seems zidane and cannavaro were neck to neck, so he wasn't overlooked after all.

Zizou totally deseve this award...

True - second only to Portugal!;)

yes, exactly.

they like to criticise the fact that because zidane got the award, there is no fair play.

hello --> italy's style of playing is against fair play on so many levels. whether it be physical, or verbal.

I believe it was the Italians that actually invented "diving". Now there's a surprise!!:P

materazzi deserves a gold medal for his efforts. he blows everyone else out of the water.

or off the pitch.

Don't forget - he's now known as "Mat(ador)azzi!!:P

I'm posting here without reading all the other posts...something I don't normally do...but I honestly believe that even though Zidane made a dispicable error, he earned the award. Ask yourself this: Did he make one mistake, or did he have a brilliant World Cup? What's more important? He and Materazzi...sp? should have been equally penalised for the incident in the final and noone can take away from his talent....Congrats to him!

:laugh3:

and it's better when the matador ends up hurt.

I don't think there was any one player in the whole tournament who had a "brilliant" world cup.

Zidane was probably as good as any, though........................

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!!

I just read that FIFA president Joseph Blatter told the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica" that they might take away Zidane's Golden Ball! He said that his foul was against the thought of Fair Play and that he wouldn't deserve it anymore even though he had a brilliant career.

It's not sure what the FIFA will decide, but at least there's a discussion about whether Zidane can keep the award or not..
