crestingwaves Posted July 12, 2006 Share Posted July 12, 2006 Sorry if this has been talked about before... but Chris said that GPASUYF had a really easy intro guitar...(as he was just playing his guitar opened stringed).... So, obviously it had been tuned differently...Im guessing that he had it tuned so that it was a E chord (E, B, E, G#, b, e)...but Im not certain.. Also, what does he do after that, when he does start playing chords....?? Thanks for your help. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
TraceOddity Posted July 12, 2006 Share Posted July 12, 2006 You're close...it's a drop D tuning...drop the top and bottom string to Ds and leave the other strings tuned to standard. I can't explain it from there unless you feel like dropping by with a guitar...lol...but it might be in 'The Instrument Room' section...good luck! Marky Posted July 12, 2006 Share Posted July 12, 2006 I'm sure the tuning has been posted many times before but... 6 = C# 5 = C# 4 = E# 3 = G# 2 = C# 1 = C# Open will be a C# chord. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
samdevos Posted July 12, 2006 Share Posted July 12, 2006 33211 55422 44311 try these chords its sound also good on normal tuning. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
coldplay_97 Posted July 12, 2006 Share Posted July 12, 2006 yea, ive always wondered how he just strums open when i alwasys play an E chord. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Trouble87 Posted July 12, 2006 Share Posted July 12, 2006 I'm sure the tuning has been posted many times before but... 6 = C# 5 = C# 4 = E# 3 = G# 2 = C# 1 = C# Open will be a C# chord. This is the correct tuning, he just strums a few times with every string open then he goes and does this: 333000 222000 111000 1xxxxx 111000 000000 listen to the song for the strumming pattern, it's basicly hit the 6th 5th and 4th string alone on the downstroke and then on the upstroke you hit the three open strings Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
amsterdam528 Posted July 12, 2006 Share Posted July 12, 2006 :( I want to play this song so bad but I'm always afraid I'm gonna tear my B string. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
winnie Posted July 12, 2006 Share Posted July 12, 2006 try standard-tuning and these chords: 0-2-2-1-0-0 3-5-5-3-0-0 2-4-4-3-0-0 1-3-3-2-0-0 and so on... for the chorus: 8-10-10-9-0-0 3-5-5-3-0-0 5-7-7-6-0-0 It's not the "real" way how they do it plus it's three semitones too high in standard tuning (you might tune down all your strings 3 STs to play along), but it still works very fine to me :nice: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
amsterdam528 Posted July 12, 2006 Share Posted July 12, 2006 I got it... e --> B B --> B G --> F# D --> B A --> F# E --> B Capo 2 It's not authentic unless the high e and B strings are the same tuning, for that boosted double high C# sound (and for the rolled chord at the end) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

improvisation Posted July 13, 2006 Share Posted July 13, 2006 dont ever trust a tab online they are all wrong 99 percent of the time. Buy the dang book like i have and youll see how wrong this are. But yes the guy had it write with the tuning with all the C#'s. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
bohs man Posted July 14, 2006 Share Posted July 14, 2006 all the tabs posted here are wrong!!! this is in fact the proper tuning 6 C# 5 G# 4 C# 3 F 2 G# 1 C# I wont do a tab because you can figure it out yourself!! but the chords you use are in this order (i dont know what they are called so i will call them 1-4) x=mute the string!! 1 (000000) 2 (3x3300) 3 (2x2200) 4 (1x1100) this is the way Chris plays it you have to play the 6th string notes with your thumb and mute the 5th string with it also.Trust me this 100% right ive bought the official tab book and its WRONG!! These are the only chords used throughout the verse. then there are only 2 other chords left (number 2 from above is used in the chorus as well) for the chorus which i will refer to as 5 and 6 5 (8x8800) 2 (3x3300) 6 (5x5500) play in this order for the chorus ie 5,2,6. and thats it really its easy once you get the tuning and strumming right its my favourite Coldplay song so i took the time to learn it properly. Hope this helps!! Bohs Man. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
amsterdam528 Posted July 14, 2006 Share Posted July 14, 2006 That can't be right. The last chord you can clearly hear Chris strumming 2 C#s in succession, so the B and e string must have the same tuning. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
bohs man Posted July 14, 2006 Share Posted July 14, 2006 Have you even tuned the guitar and tried to play it??? obviously not im telling you, I guarantee you this is 100% right,if that tuning and chords isnt right well then i will never post on this forum again i thats how sure I am.Bare in mind that your 6th string should be tuned the lowest and every string after that should be of a higher pitch. bohs man Posted July 14, 2006 Share Posted July 14, 2006 sigh... some people... looks like your not going to be posting here anymore because im about to photo copy the book for AROBTTH... LOL are you some sort of jackass or can you not read??? obviously you did not read my first post in which i mentioned i have the AROBTTH Chord Book!!! and i told you its WRONG!!! and to prove it to you that says for the first chord you have to play you have to put your fingers on strings which simply isnt true because anyone who has seen Coldplay live or even watched the Live2003 DVD knows that when Chris strums the 1st chord he is playing all the strings OPEN!!! which means he is not fretting any of them,so go ahead and do your scan of the book which i already i have and which i already know is wrong but then again i bet you never even tried to play it the way i said or else you dont know how to tune a guitar!! bohs man Posted July 15, 2006 Share Posted July 15, 2006 Folks i dont want to come across as arrogant or cocky because im not,but i would like people to try and play it the way i have said before they start passing judgement on it,I always remember wayching GPASUYF live on MTV in Manchester in 2002 it was the first time i saw it live and i couldnt believe how good it was and this how it became my favourite song and i always wanted to learn how to play it,so i bought the AROBTTH chord book to learn but i tried the way it sayed and it is a close replication but its not the exact way because i knew from seeing Chris play it that the first chords he plays he just plays all the strings open,and if you dont believe me watch the DVD and change the angle to the 4 small screens and watch Chris and you will see!! I have absolutely no reason to lie about what im saying i just wanted to help others because they were saying that the tabs they saw were wrong which is why i posted it,but instead all i got is grief from people who havent even tried it thats what annoys me. EDIT - another example that the book is wrong is Warning Sign,the book gives a tuning that i think is the same as Jonnys guitar at the end of The Scientist,anyway the real way to play it is tune your 1st string down to D again and a capo on the third fret,and if you dont believe me then watch the video of it from Glastonbury 2005 and you will soon see that i am right and not everything in the book is right. Thanks for listening. Bohs Man. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have the 'Live 2003' book and it shows the first chord to be a C# with the tuning that i've posted above, and is played with all the strings open.
