Have We Become Immune To Terrorism?

Featured Replies

9/11, as we all know, recieved round the clock coverage for days.

Madrid also,

London more so...

Every suicide bonbing in the mid-east for the last 10 years...

And there are many more than I feel like typing at the moment...

And Now India:

All the major news coverage I've followed today gives the Mumbai bomings about 15 minutes and then moves on, whereas a few years ago, this news would have shocked and horrified the world.

Are we, on a global level, becoming hardened to terrorist attack on major centres? Do you have more coverage in your part of the world? Last year, after the Tsunami and earthquakes, ppl started complaining of 'donor fatigue' due to all the fundraisers and relief efforts. Are we now suffering 'terrorism fatigue?'

I think today's victims deserve at least a dialogue and I'm not seeing it in North American Media coverage...Weigh in!!!

Sadly yes. the media does what it always does and runs stories too much. terrorism is still a big threat and danger. But the media has taken it too far, as usual.

For all our disputes, I'm not surprised, but I am delighted you showed up here first...I kind of thought you might!!! What I was saying is that the coverage has gone from 24-7 to 15 mins./hour and has taken any 'real' impact from current attacks. Glad to hear your voice on this one!!

Yeah.

I see stupid stories about dogs that are on air longer than breaking news about terrorist attacks.

Yeah.

You must have been watching CNN earlier...or something like it...that's exactly what was bugging me earlier. 15 minutes about India, then a 'special Interest Story' about a dog who does tricks for charity??? That's the story I saw...at least it's for charity...but if I want a pet to do tricks for charity, I'll get my cat to turn off my TV...lol...he actually CAN!

yeah thats really bad how the media gives nothing to the incident in india. especially here in australia. but i gurantee if an aussie or american were killed it would make headlines. i suppose its because of the target audience, a lot of people just like to hear what affects them and its sad that things like what happen in india doesn't...

I'm actually surprised CNN would have just 15min. on it..... Anderson Cooper usually talk about the 'untalked' stuff...

Terrorism abroad has become so commonplace that it's nothing new any more and people just accept it as part of daily life. Sad but true. I myself am actually sick of all these stories and I'm glad they don't have nonstop coverage of them.

"What's this? 200 people killed again? Eh this happens every week."

:\

i think it may be because the american news only cares about what happens in amercia, which is sad.

^ not entirely true..... a bit unfair actually... look at the tsunami.... there was round the clock coverage on that.

And look at what happened in our own backyard with Katrina.. a few weeks after it happened.. everyone was on to other news...

9/11 wouldn't have happened if there wasn't television.

yeah seeing as how we give the most out of any nation, we must only care about ourselves....

You might have a point there...yes.

That's what shocked me...It was 24 hours of horror, just that I wish it felt like the western media cared more.

And for the person who said 'if an Aussie or an American were killed etc.' You're so right...if an American was missing after the bonmbing, CNN'd still be all over it.

Sad but true, as someone said. Major terrorist attacks are just another day at the office now.

I'm not going to re-post the letter in the 'Message To The People Of The West' thread...but I guess even our little community isn't immune...Just another day at the office...

No actually I was watching a local news channel. :laugh3: Apparently a lot of news networks like to talk about dogs! Haha.

My god, I was watching the news again today, and there was this segment less that 2 minutes long about how 53 people were killed in Israel when a man in a van gathered a crowd, saying that he was offering jobs, and detonated the van while the crowd was there.

2 minutes.

wow.

well, maybe it's like that in CNN.

Over here, because of the war, the 3 major channels have cancelled all of the broadcasting and there are 24-7 updates of what's going on. And since terrorism is so widespread in out little country, sadly I hear a bit too much of it.

And you'd think we're immune to it by now since it's happening so much, but every suicide bombing the whole system is quiet and shocked for a while. I think this happens here most of all because it is such a small country and so you always know someone who is somehow connected to something that happens. It would be like something happening in your neighborhoud or something. :-/
