2006: this year's releases thread

Featured Replies

kay, let's have a topic in which we could discuss albums/EPs/even singles which were released this year

rate, review and recommend them to other members

soon i'll post my list of albums that i heard this year so far plus with some rates and notes

feel free to update

defintely... everyone should check out Gnarls Barkley St. Elsewhere.... its a very innovative album and Dangermouse has done it again!! Need I say more??

I can't say enough about Muse Black Holes and Revelations (--my official review on this will be up soon :wink3:) And of course Thom Yorke's The Eraser---MEGA!

i think i should check out Gnarls Barkley, i've read good stuff about them

here are my recommendations:

1. Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies - probably the best album of the year so far, if you want good indie pop-rock with some blues and jazz effects, you MUST get it!!! genre: alternative/indie pop-rock

2. Thom Yorke - The Eraser - a solo effort of one of the most influential artists of all time and it's great. and it's THOM YORKE!!! so you must buy it anyway. genre: alternative/electronic pop

3. Guillemots - Through The Windowpane - the biggest surprise of the year for me, i downloaded the album some hours ago and after the first listening it made my top 5 of the year. wow! genre: alternative/indie pop-rock

4. The Flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics

5. Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche

honorable mentions:

- TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain

- Ratatat - Classics

although, this list might change pretty much because i haven't listened to many albums yet

...and stuff you can easily forget because it sucks:

1. Angels & Airwaves - We Don't Need To Whisper

2. Razorlight - Razorlight

3. Tool - 10000 Days

4. Muse - Black Holes And Revelations

5. Paul Oakenfold - A Lively Mind

Tool and Muse are both awesome bands and i really enjoyed their new albums...

but i need to check out Destroyer ... O.o

^ highly recommended, Grace ;)

it seems this thread has died before it has even started

Destoyer sound interesting, might give them a listen.

Doesn't seem like a good musical year though :(

I haven't heard as much music as I'd have liked this year :embarassed:

this thread's for you then

i hope we can make our Pitchfork here, Coldplaying Pitchfork, sounds awful though :o

we just need more people who could recommend some stuff

i wouldn't say that. maybe there wasn't any really big releases/surprises (yet) like Arcade Fire was 2 years go or Sufjan Stevens a year ago. but there's still many good albums out there :)

i can think of 7 really good albums (listed them above), 3-4 average and around 6-7 weak

I've listened to the usual's, Keanesnowpatrolmusethomyorkeetcetcetc. Longcut (manc ) is knocking about somewhere, that might be next

  • Author

i haven't heard Snow Patrol yet, might give them a try though. not really familiar to them

Keane's new one is average IMO, some songs are better than the average on H&F and some are worse. although Atlantic is a brilliant song.

next album i will try will be St. Elsewhere i think, has to be really good according to the critics

Nik, you seem to be very into progressive music...

you should check out some older Tool stuff or A Perfect Circle. ...

Nik' date=' you seem to be very into progressive music...[/color']

haha not really

i'm actually trying to listen to everything that i can and i find interesting, especially if we consider how easy is to get the albums from the internet nowadays

yes, i heard their older stuff is pretty massive, might check them out. though i really didn't like 10000 days :/

^

they definitely have a weird sound...but Parabola, Stinkfist, Lateralus, Eulogy, Aenima ... are all amazingly good!

and i've uploaded an A Perfect Circle album a few days ago in the other bands mp3s thread...

it's not their best album but you might download it :)

  • Author

ok, will check that one

but not this week

this week is about 2006, i listen only to this year's albums since days :D

i'm still trying to get into the new Keane, but with no succes atm. i d/loaded Stadium Arcadium but still haven't listened to it, maybe i will though i don't really want to :freak:

Explosions in the Sky will be releasing a new album in February, which I know isn't 2006, but it was the closest thing I could find

okay ... a 2006 week ...

i can totally understand that you're not willing to listen to RHCP now...

they're so overrated in my opinion ... god, i so don't like them.

and that stupid Dani California video is on tv nonstop! :veryangry:

2006 is not the best year though ...

there were some releases but most of them were disappointing :(

  • Author

haha this RHCP thingie gave me a good idea to create a new thread haha

yes, many albums were disappointing i agree, but i still think it's a good year so far and let's see what we'll have in the next 5 and a half months ;)

the new Killers is coming, though i'm not expecting too much

RHCP are so bad, why they're considered "greats" I'll never know.

i don't like the killers ... +___+

they're too ... i dunno ... american i suppose. O.o

or what's that other band's name?...

ermm ... Billy Talent? that's pure crap as well

By August it looks pretty good: Bob Dylan (God), Audioslave (pretty good), DJ Shadow and then October its The Who

Maybe not that bad after all

I can't think of the last time an album that had the same affect as OK Computer was released. There seems to be quite a lack of good music in the past few years, with a few exceptions.

i know a lot of people are going to disagree with me, but im really enjoying Muse's new album right now.. The Eraser is also pretty good, along with RHCPs. Snow Patrols was ok, but I liked their old sound better.. same with Keane. The new Flaming Lips had a few good songs, but I thought that the album slowly got worse and worse as it went on... I'm also a biggg fan of Spoon's new album Gimme Fiction, would definetly reccomend that to anyone on this board

A mix of the best of the first half of 2006, here, according to me

Tracklisting:

1. The Most Serene Republic – Emergency Performance Art Piece

2. Band of Horses – The Funeral

3. Feist – Mushaboom (k-os Mix)

4. Thom Yorke – Cymbal Rush

5. A Lily - Lights Shone Brighter. My Delicate Sun Is My Sparklin' Sun

6. Sufjan Stevens - The Mistress Witch from McClure (or, The Mind That Knows Itself)

7. Islands - Don't Call Me Whitney, Bobby

8. Mogwai – Acid Food

9. Final Fantasy - Many Lives -> 49 MP

10. The Album Leaf - Broken Arrow

Spoon's new album Gimme Fiction

i FUCKING LOVE that album, but it was released last year
