The Observer - The 50 albums That Changed Music

Featured Replies

actually it's a great list. and Spice Girls' 21st place is deserved. just think about how much did they influence the 90s - 00s pop

21 The Spice Girls

Spice (1996)

The music business has been cynically creating and marketing acts since the days of the wax cylinder, but on nothing like the scale of the Spice phenomenon, which was applied to crisps, soft drinks, you name it. Musically, the Spice's Motown-lite was unoriginal, but 'Girl Power', despite being a male invention, touched a nerve and defined a generation of tweenies who took it to heart.

Without this ... five-year-olds would not have become a prime target for pop marketeers. Most of all, there'd be no Posh'n'Becks.

Heh well, I agree with list on 98%, the only thing that confused me is Spice Girls. I know that they've influenced pop music very much but I don't feel like I wanna thank them for that. Though pop music never bothered me too much so whatever.

no britpop without Nirvana's Nervermind??? someone explain me this, because it sounds ridiculous

:freak:

I can't really agree that James Blunt was influenced by Radiohead that much. Agreed about Coldplay and Keane, but James Blunt..

I think they're trying to say that Britpop (at least the so-called Britpop era of the 90's as represented by Blur, Oasis et. al.) found it's voice and direction as a reaction to the US grunge movement as epitomised by Nirvana's Nevermind.

james blunt is there beacouse his at the top now

Why Nirvana is so low on the chart as 47 i think they should br higher

Nevermind is so overrated, it isn't the best nirvana album.

Everybody knows In Utero is the better album

Well yea i agree about the spice girls being ok there....because the title - albums that changed music, fits to the spice girls, they really did change music..even if it was only pop music.

Nevermind is so overrated, it isn't the best nirvana album.

My theory is, (although whoever made this list wouldn't have the same one), that Nirvana were a massive influence to Radiohead, Blur and Oasis.

Listen to Pablo Honey and if you listen to it like you haven't ever heard Radiohead before it sounds like a British version of grunge with a poppier edge. I did this the other day and got very suprised. Try 'Thinking About You' and if you listen properly you'll see what I mean. The slurred words etc.

It is quite a good list.

WHAT'S THIS :stunned: ? Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon 29th ?

Behind the Spice Girls ? This has to be a Joke ! DSOTM should be rated 0th !!

Without the Dark Side of the Moon, there would be No Spice Girls and no modern music.

Pink Floyd invented today's music on this LP !!

It's not a top 50 albums, it's a "the 50" albums, so the numbers don't count for anything.

Nevermind is so overrated, it isn't the best nirvana album.

And the Foo Fighters self-titled is better than all of them. Although noone will agree with me on that.

It is a good list but I'm still a bit lost as to why the strokes is this it? was included

It is a great album, but its hardly had the time to become an influential album...
