Lyrics or tune?

What is more important to you in a song?

This question came to my mind again because I remembered a statement by a girl from my class...she said some years ago...

we were somehow talking about songs in class and she said she only listens to the lyrics...that these are the most important to her...

in my case I have to say that I first of all listen to the tune and especially how it is presented....

sometimes a song doesn't even need lyrics for me..if the tune and the way it is presented is strong and good enough....

hehe...but if the song has some cheesy lyrics then of course the whole song is crap...I would say...

first of all the tune for me cause i usually don't understand the lyrics when i hear a song for the first time. But if i like the tune and later on i realise that it has crappy lyrics i usually don't like the song anymore ... unless if the tune is really amazing.

the priority depends on artist

Yeah I agree there....

I mean...I expect more by a band like Radiohead for example than by erm...erm.....*I need a band that has lyrics that are not THAT good but great tunes......maybe Coldplay?*

so.......if the tunes are great I don't care that much about the lyrics...and i can be sure about Coldplay for example that they won't write lyrics that are so bad an trashy that the whole song will be destroyed..

and now I wanted to say something...but don't know how to express it..

The tune is definitely the most important because unless it's good I won't even be able to listen to the lyric.

If the tune is bad, the song might as well just be a piece of poetry.

However, a mega-cheesy lyric can ruin a song, too.;)

I liked X&Y because the tunes were great. I think you'll find that the people who didn't are far more into lyrics.

That's my theory, anyway.;)

both are important...i think

sometime ago, while i was watching MTV..my nanny who doesn't know english ask me that what song which i listen to at that time

she said it's sound like some non-sense song in thai

and yes!!! the song that i listen at that time is a crappy song

so my nanny is listen to the tune :o

since then i start to pay more attention to the tune

and not just a lyrics

yeah both are important the lyrics have to make sense to me and the tune just simply has to sound nice, im working on a song right now and i cant seem to get any lyrics for it, the tune sounds or reminds me of a pirate song, so...yeah both have to be good

Both, but most often it's the tune that strikes me the most when I hear a song for the first time, and makes me remember it more rather than the lyrics. Sometimes there comes a song with lyrics that do catch your attention and make you think, and that's just as good. Like when I first heard Fix You, I stopped.

Both, combined are best.

I totally agree :D !

It works for me in a such way, too...

I need both - the perfect harmony between lyrics and tunings is a song's most important thing for me.

i pay attention much more to the tunes.Usually i don't know the words of the songe, even if them r italian. If i don't remember i invent the lyrics, cos i don't care them much!!!!Maybe, later after having heard the song a lot i start to consider the text!
