Has Hollywood lost 'its thread'?

Featured Replies

Is it me or is Hollywood really struggling with movies this year? The movies are utter rubbish that are on release at the moment and really haven't been all that good all year. What do you think?

It's been slightly better than last year. Which isn't saying much of anything at all, because last year sucked big time.

So yeah... as for the reasons, I could go on for far too long, so I won't.

There are now far too many animated movies, brain-candy comedies, mindless action films and pointless big-screen versions of TV series such as Starsky Hutch and Miami Vidce.

Creativity appears to have gone out of the window....................

The main reason why america is doing animated movies is that they get a good profit out of them due to the low cost of producing them. You get a famous person in to read their lines, taking them maybe 3 days at the most, means less money

Either that, or it could be, that it's trendy to create films based on comics, books and games; X-men ,x2, x3, Daredevil, Supermen returns, Hulk, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, V for Vendetta, Lord of The Rings, Narnia,Harry Potter,etc...

Its very trendy to. but i dont mind. at least its beter then crappy remakes like last year.

I was being sarcastic with that remark.

My point is that in the 00's there's a massive lack of creativity, or maybe it's just a fear of being unprofitable with a film that's "original".That is, a film where I'm not able to predict how the plot's going to unfold, based on the first 10-20 minutes.

The last film I saw was F&F:Tokyo Drift, and I could tell, right from the start, there's this trouble maker, who'll start drifting like a total noob, only to become a master in less than a week, he'll get the babe, and defeat his main adversary.I didn't go to see that film, because of some intellectual desire, I went because of skimpy dresses gals, and fast cars, but still person would appreciate some sort of twist in a plot.

Some of the those movies were OK, especially Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, which were all spectacular and very detailed.

It's the TV remakes in particular that suck because they never live up to the originals, and in recent years there have been loads of them.

The only ones that have really worked in this category have been the Star Trek movies, because they have used the actors from the TV series.

My two favourite films at the cinema last year were Pride & Prejudice and The Constant Gardener, which were quality. There are far too few films like that around.

If you'll notice there has always been a lack of creativity in Hollywood. It's always been about cashing in and it always will be. No one puts millions of dollars into a movie unless it's guaranteed to bring in the big bucks. It ain't pretty but there's no other way a movie like Pirates Of The Carribean or The Da Vinci Code could be made. Hollywood is run on familiarity.

The good movies are the ones that aren't made without the filmmakers giving a crap about profit, and doing what they want. Yet ironically, these movies get trashed because there is usually too much talking, or because it's smart and demands attention.

I don't think I liked a single film that came out last year except maybe The Life Aquatic but that may have been in 2004. They don't make movies like they used to. The 80's and 90's were the best in my opinion: Back to the future 1, 2 & 3, Terminator 1 & 2, Indiana Jones and so on...

Fifth element was fine too' date=' that Leeloo is fine lass.[/quote']

That film is YEARS old!!:stunned:

Exactly, that was sort of a follow up, from the post above mine.

80's and 90's weren't too different from what we have today, yet movies from those eras are much more original.Last action hero, anyone?

Than again it could be that movie makers today thinks it's enough simply to copy old conceps with a slightly different story, to make a big buck.

I don't want to sound pessimistic, not too long ago, we had a matrix, and maybe we'll have movie like that one soon enough, but still...

Yes - there was The Matrix, which was a great film, and then they went and ruined it with the two sequels, which weren't a patch on the first movie......................

And then you get to see "bullet time" in THPS(skateboarding game).:dozey:

See, there's the other big part of the problem right there. The real creativity so rarely comes up to the top that it gets reused to death almost instantly. Not only were the Matrix sequels not that good, but the stuff that left you in complete awe from the first movie had be so overused in the following years that is just seemed stale by the time the sequels came around.

The original Matrix is still my all-time favorite movie, though. :D

I think in Hollywood nowadays all is about money and not about quality....so i rather watch german films...or european films.....

I can't stand "Hollywood" animation films!!

There are some american animations are are good, mainly the ones from pixar & shrek, ice-age 1 & 2.

The ones which are lovingly created by studios and not put together by a spotty teenager on work experiance.

I'm just tired of the remakes...because...frankly...the original is usually always better! I would just like to see more original work. A movie like Garden State was so great, I want to see more movies like that.

I absolutely hate those 'Teen' movies! And sometimes it's kind of embarassing to be 14, because I'm always put into these situations where people are like 'oh teenagers. Bad kids!' And I'm not like that, I'm better than that, not that I'm saying I'm better than a bunch of other people. A couple of weeks ago, I saw 'John Tucker Must Die.' Sure, it's funny, but really...I'm tired of those stupid antics they show that make other teenagers now think that they should do those things. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying ALL of them are stupid, the ones from the 80's are brilliant, like 'The Breakfast Club' and 'Pretty in Pink.' Those are classics!

And I've recently found out how great French movies are...and I'm falling in love with them! The last French movie I saw was called 'He Loves Me...He Loves Me Not.' Great Movie! :)

^You should watch Hatley high, my favourite teen film of all times.

^^I've never heard of it. Is it an American movie? I'm going to Blockbuster tonight so I'll check it out...
