FRIED PRALINE, COKE WIN BIG TEX CHOICE AWARDS

DALLAS — Wondering what they'll fry next for the State Fair of Texas? Start imagining Fried Praline Perfection and Fried Coke.

Judges for the second annual Big Tex Choice Awards Contest chose Shirley London's Fried Praline Perfection as the tastiest fried delicacy and gave Abel Gonzales Jr.'s Fried Coke the creativity award.

The two won out over fried macaroni and cheese, a deep-fried cosmopolitan, and sweet and meaty concoctions wrapped in tortillas and fried.

Both London and Gonzales have been thinking a long time about what to fry up this year.

"I bought some pralines last year at the fair and thought to myself, these would be good deep-fried," London said. She plans to sell the pralines alongside fried marshmallows, which were created in 2004.

Gonzales, a computer analyst who won the tastiest award last year with a fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich, said the Fried Coke came about just from thinking aloud.

"A friend of mine said, 'What are they going to think about next, fried Coke?'" Gonzales said. He started experimenting and came up with Coca-Cola flavored batter that is deep fried and then has Coke fountain syrup drizzled on it and is topped with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry.

"If this takes off and there is good word of mouth, I'll be the 'Coke guy,'" he said. "People are going to want to try it just for the novelty."

The six entries in Monday's contest were selected from 26 proposals for fried foods this year.

The fair frying begins Sept. 29.

I don't know if you ever watch King Of The Hill...sometimes I think it's almost insulting to texans...but as far as I know it's also written by Texans. THere's an episode where Bill and Boomhower..sp?...try deep-frying everything in sight, and before this thread, I had no idea this actually happenned!! Oh well. I'd rather hear about this than drive-by shootings...I wonder how deep-fried English Cider would taste...lol!:P

Only us Americans would really think of that, huh? Lol!

Although I think deep-fried Twinkies is stranger... and deep-fried Mars Bars too. Seriously, wtf?!

What the hell? :o

I had a deep fried Mars Bar!! TOO sweet and TOO greasy. The first bite was heaven, and trying to finish the rest was HELL!
