MAG March 2007

The Pyke Position

he had his doubts, but thankfully singer-songwriter Josh Pyke never stopped making music. Ed. Nimmervoll reports.

Josh Pyke has served a long apprenticeship. Finally, after years of toil, his first album, Memories & Dust is out. "i'm 26 and I've been trying to be a professional musician since i was 18, so its taken a long time,: he told MAG.

"there's definitely themes of frustration that run through a lot of my songs. It's pretty frustrating when your passion isn't paying your bills, and you have to work three or four jobs to persue your passion. Actually, things started going well for me when i let go; when i stopped being such a jaded guy. Instead of watching what other people were doing i started concentrating on doing my own thing and doing the best i could."

Pyke formed his first group when he was a12 years old. In 2004, with his latest band disintergrating around him, he headed into the studio, and with $ 800 and 30 hours to spare, laid down 11 tracks, performing all parts himself.

" its great being in a band because you're collabborating with your friendsand it's often an amazing experience. When things aren't going well , you want to be able to know why. I thought if i released these songs myself and it didn't go well at least i'd know that it was me. I wrote allt he songs, i played all the instruments. if it didn't go well i'd know that it was me and that i didn't have what it took." (awww omg thank goodness it went well!!!! :) )

i cant believe i've never seen that!

I LOVE IT!! of course hehe. it's hard for Sir Joshy to do anything i DON'T love. i adore the other Middle Of The Hill clip too. all his clips are so clever :nice:

thanks MUCHES for all the stuff kekita!!! you're wonderful  and he's so damn attractive.

i feel bad coz i've been neglecting this thread :(

but i promise i shall be back to giving it the love it deserves very soon!!

ok was gona continue this in my earlier post but want to bump this thread higher up the ladder ;)

He chose to release those songs as Night Hour.

" i regret that decision now," he adimts. "At the time there were a few male singer/songwriters around. I didn't feel any connection with them musically and i didn't want to be lumped in with that crew. Thats why i went for amore collective name.

Also, i wasn't quite sure where it was all going to go. I just wanted to leave my options open.

" then it became clear that it was quite confusing for people. So i ditched it because, for better or worse, i am a solo artist."

Now recording as Josh Pyke, the years and what he'e experienced have made him very self-sufficient when making a record.

" i always start recording my songs at home. Then i give them to the producer in the studio and we start working on the tracks there. i usually take care of percussion, the bass, the guitars, this and that, and obviously the vocals."

Memories & Dust contians the catchy pop song of the same name, and the popular radio hit, Middle of the Hill.

" i hope that it's the beginning of something more substaintial for me. At the end of 2007 i'll know whether it is. I'm supporting myself as a musician now and really want that to continue. I've worked many, many jobs and i'm happy to be out of that scene.

" i think it's my best work. I listen to it and I love it, but i feel in me that i can do better. It definitely feels like the end of one era and, hopefully, the beginning of the next 20 years of my life."

okies that was it hope you enjoyed reading it and apologies for any spelling mistakes but i've written the above under the influence of insomnia and ... ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

joshy was on rove :)

rose byrne (in new movie sunshine) used to go to school with him.

I just saw that. I hadn't any of his music til then and I quite liked him. :)

^ that's great Annie! :nice:

i seriously had NO IDEA he was gonna be on Rove!! i've been away on hols since Wednesday, and i was watching tv last night (i got home this afternoon) and i forgot that Rove was on and and i flicked over and JOSHY WAS ON!!! i was delighted. BUT the guy that was singing harmonies was singing too loud/had his mike too loud, and was singing over Josh, i thought  but it was still good, Josh was still wonderful!!

:heart::heart:

I heard an even better performance by him last night on J-tv. Even better than his performance on Rove! I think I might even check out his album...

  • Author

^he was wonderful on jtv wasnt he!! oh do check out his album Annie, i'm sure you'll like it :nice: and see if you can also get your hands on his older EPs: Feeding The Wolves and Recordings 2003-2005. they are well worth it too if you like him!
