What's the matter with X&Y?

Featured Replies

I'm not trying to start a huge argument here or name-calling etc, I'm just genuinely interested to know why exactly so many people are not satissfied with X&Y??? I love it, every track on the album is amazing in my humble opinion - perhaps I'm not looking into the album as much as everyone else, so any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Liking or not liking a certain album can't be explained, it depends on your taste, your feelings, your opinions, whatever.. So if anyone doesn't like X&Y, then it's their right and there doesn't have to be a special reason for it.. =)

I didn't. First of all, because it's a Coldplay album and since I've heard Parachutes and A Rush Of Blood I excpected something good or at least qualitative. What I can hear in X&Y is not qualitative at all.

Fix You is just a pointless mere verbiage, in my opinion. The tune is shitty too, actually. Somehow it makes me feel the way Yellow does. Catchy melody, everybody adores it and I just don't. The lyrics are horrible, that's what I think.

Speed Of Sound is better, but still bad, too bad. I mean, it sounds like a kind of russian boys band with sleek hair and all... Russian "pop" songs sound very similar to Speed Of Sound.

The Hardest Part - no comments, really.

What If - not my cup of tea, that's what I could say. It reminds me of so many songs at one moment that I'm starting to think that it wasn't Chris who wrote it, though I know he did. And again, can't get the meaning, don't like the tune.

I can say that Twisted Logic and Square One are not that bad but two "so-so" songs can't make an album great, you know. Besides, I was excpecting more.

By the way, I'm not trying to argue or what, that's just an answer to the thread-starter

I think some people are just too fussy!;)

personally i think that X&Y is a great album...i dont find anything wrong with it

I think some people are just too fussy!;)

Fussy?... I don't think it has something to do with being fussy. It's just about liking or not liking the music.

i really like x&y but it is last out in my order of preference after a rush of blood to the head and parachutes. there is something undescribably special about arobtth that isn't in x&y but regardless i still love the album. it is unique and shows how the guys are continuing to grow as musicians and fearless in the challenge to appraoch new things.

i genuinely have to take time listening to an album to decide whether i like it or not. i don't think "it's by Coldplay so i have to like it!" because i reckon when fans start thinking that way and avoid critique, the quality of music starts to drop.

^^ because i really like x&y i haven't been much help to answering your question about why people don't like it. i can only assume it's difference in style to the first 2 albums is what turns some fans off a little, but personally, i think the difference is positive and shows the band are still thriving to improve their stuff - and that's always good for fans :nice:

I really like X&Y too. But I agree with what you said about there being something special about AROBTTH. I can still listen to it today and it feel like I'm listening to it for the first time. (even tho I'm onto my second copy cosI wore the other one out! lol)

There are some great songs on X&Y. It's all part of the music making process. You need to try new things. We would complain if they just released the same old stuff album after album! I'm looking forward to the next one! :)

X&Y has no meaning as an album, it's just a compilation of very badly mixed songs. if you could mix the songs onto different albums, then it might sound much better. this album doesn't have it's own atmosphere, everything sounds like a mess. there's no connection between songs. you can enjoy some songs particularly, but as an album it doesn't work, at least for me.

after all X&Y isn't dreadful or unlistenable, but it's a big disappointment from a band which wants to be the best band in the World. they definitely need to renew

From what I've read, it's not that it's bad album, just not as good as their previous work. And that's the way I look at it. The songs are good but not great; there's just a certain spark missing, a certain feeling that just doesn't seem to have gone into this album. A Rush Of Blood To the Head had soul, and that's what made it so good.

It is different, but I see that as a good thing as well. It means they're changing things up, not just producing the same stuff that worked before (Speed Of Sound notwithstanding).

Hopefully, they work a little more for the new album, and we'll have plenty to talk about!

somebody say X&Y is too commercial...many songs have special efficacy not like Parachutes is more pure. But I still love Fix You,Speed Od Sound...

like i said before i like x&y...but i have to say my all time fav is parachutes

Well....Coldplay just disappointed me with that album.......the songs just sound as if they were written for big stadiums....

eg....fix you has got some weak lyrics...I think even i could have written them....because they remind me of some of my poems...:laugh4:

X&Y is the album I skip most songs...

best song on this album is imo twisted logic.....the only song I can see something special in....

well I just expected more from a band like Coldplay.....hope they will fulfill my expectations with their next album...

i think that parachutes was an amazing album for his quality.....difficult to reach for everyone....

AROBTTH it's been a very good album and don't forget that the second album for a band is very, very hard....

X&Y it's not bad....and its songs gotta be heared more times before appreciete them( this is my case....)

Amyway compared to the previouses albums.....:(:(:(

When I first heard it, I was like, 'huh?' I was sooo used to AROBTTH, considering I've practically worn out that CD :P....but after listening to it a little awhile, I was like 'oh yeah, this is Coldplay!' :D

x&y for me has no life or atmosphere in it.

chris went way too far in metaphoric lyric to that extend it sometimes seems like a total non sense, unlike arobtth where i heard one of the most nicest lyrics ever. i don't like the whole approach towards x&y that came under the influence of chris who tought of it as a master piece that should be done to the perfection and that's what ruined it. it's a disapointment, at least for me, now year later as i listen to it (and i don't do it much cus i can't enjoy while listening to it, as Nik said..it doesn't seem as an album) .

most of the album is made out of recycled melody's from arobtth but on the other hand there are 3-4 songs that really showed what they're capable of and that gives hope for 4th album cus i really really want them to be inovative.

Me too!

X&Y

:guitarist: I personally love X&Y!!!!!! I also love Parachutes & Rush Of Blood To The Head as well! I think their sound has really evolved with each CD, which is something most artists should aim to do! Not every album should sound the same as the last! That would be quite boring! I'm so looking foward to hearing their next album/cd! I bet it will totally surprise us! :sunny:

Personally i agree this whole album has a commercial or soulless feel to it. Also the CD was actually mixed differently. AROBTTH and Parachutes had a simple but clear upfront way of recording. On X&Y its like they got the album done and then put a bunch of reverb on the whole damn thing. Its like your at a stadium. The last ones were more like Chris and the band were playing in front of you right to you. And yes i feel the words on some songs really suck. The album seems to me like it was rushed and that they were probably under way too much pressure or something. The souls gone with this album. Don't get mad but i REALLY dislike Til Kingdom Come. I just cant stand the song. I love Green Eyes and the others but i just don't know...

The quality is not there. It's just not inspired at all...the lyrics sound like they were written the same for every song then mixed up a little. The overwhelming synth sound and effects take away from sharp guitars, piano and drums...from the whole instrumental track, in fact. The singing is hidden behind this atmosphere; something Radiohead could do in Kid A, but not something Coldplay should do on a very mainstream album.

I'm not really sure how to put my disappointment into words...well maybe this will work. Take a song like Amsterdam. Quiet piano until the 2nd chorus when there's bass, then song building effect and a huge crescendo. It was a pure song: each part came in as needed and none took the effect away from the others. Now, take a song like What If, the closest thing to a piano ballad on X&Y. It starts off with vocals immediately (something that happens 4 times on X&Y, but only once on AROBTTH and Parachutes and I'm not particularly a fan of) and the piano music, while just as repetitive as Amsterdam, is just boring chords. The chorus brings in everything way too quickly and the piano gets lost somewhere in the mess.

Finally, there's the issue of Chris's falsetto. It's simply overused on this album. What If, Fix You, Talk, Speed of Sound, and Low all use it far too much. The Hardest Part is just a joke of a song. Til Kingdom Come is out of place. Basically all of the b-sides (save maybe Sleeping Sun) suck. Speed of Sound's and Fix You's are just awful actually. It just seems like the gang stopped trying when I listen to them. Perhaps it's the influence of Radiohead or Muse's undying creativity and versatility on me, but Coldplay sure seems to have lost it's passion for music. With their next release, I hope they prove me wrong; I really do.

To be honest, it makes me quite sad to read some of the posts.. It's sad that Coldplay disappointed so many fans with X&Y.. I love it, though I have to admit that it's by far not as inspiring as their last two.. But I believe in them, I believe in Chris' songwriting skills and his brilliant voice, and I believe in a fantastic album to come..
