Oh yeah I know that....my sister lives in another town but when she is at home at the weekends we also use to argue about that...

typical? not really... I know a girl who likes Subaru Impreza first version!! it's not really cute...

And you Mark? which car do you drive?

Nothing special. I'm only interested in something that is reliable, inexpensive and can get me around.;)

do you have an example? what's your current car?

Ford Escort

oh really? wow!!

Which model year?

In europe, Ford escord looked like this:

From 75 til 99... 5 generations...

^And all ford escorts past the mk2 were rubbish except for the cosworths^

I have a 205 1.8 Derv, a mile eater.

Ok, I want a car, and (fingers crossed) I should be getting one soon. My shortlist is, in no order:

Renault Clio

Opel Corsa

Pegeuot 206

Anyone got anything to recommend?

I recommend you the Clio or the 206...

But before, which model year is the Corsa?

Yeah, my fave is the Clio for some reason.

The Corsa is 2007 model I believe.

A 2007 model? woah, good.

What about themodel year of the 206/Clio?

Then, the three cars are good...

I asked about the Corsa cos the models before 2000 aren't good at all...

Do you know which engine will you get (the question is for the three cars)?

I think the Clio and Corsa are 1.4 engines. I'm not sure about the 206

Avoid the Pegeuot 206, they went downhill after the '05s models.

All but the latest Corsa are crap, which just leaves you with the Clio from your list of 3...

...Might I suggest a Toyota Yaris?

Oh a new car buyer!!

Well, the lastest Corsa is less crappy than the previous ones, for sure...

But well, it's a new car and its reliability needs to be prooved... like all the new cars with loads of electronic inside...

Beside this detail (pretty important though...), this new Corsa is more comfortable and the dynamic performance is really better than the previous generations...

Erm, and sth to add, even with the 1.4 16v 90hp, it's not really high-perfomance... Cos of the weight! More than 1.100 kgs... it's way too heavy for a small car... (this is sth you can't avoid now.... all the cars are too heavy!)

Honestly, if you really have the choice, choose the Yaris!

Reliability... this is the main quality of this car. Toyota builds really good cars.

And even if it's a new one, the Yaris is still smaller than its rivals (Clio/207/206/Corsa):

-Old Yaris: 363cm

-New Yaris: 375cm

-Clio:399cm

-206:383cm

-207:403cm (!!)

-Corsa:400cm

What's more, this car is lighter, more high-performance, and it's perfect if you drive a lot in the city.

If it's an old Yaris, the 4 engines are ok ( 1.0 68hp; 1.3 87hp; 1.5 105hp; 1.4D4D 75hp).

If it's a new one, you'll have the choice between 3 engines: 1.0 70hp; 1.3 87hp; 1.4D4D 90hp.

The smaller one is a bit weak. The two other ones are ok, even good if you're yearning for the D4D version.

Wow thanks for that, Mike! The 1.3 Yaris does seem like a very good option, I had been wanting that one for some time.

Thanks again!

My parents are a little obsessed with Mazda... we have a 3 and a 6 right now (both hatchbacks) and over the last 25 years or so have gone through about 5 626s, a Protege, and a Precidia (I loved that car sooo much.)

We tried a ford a couple of times, but they were never half as well made... or fun to drive.

Strange as Madza's are owned by Ford these days.

Try and avoid getting a brand new car, get a 18 month old car or so.

The two last Mazda you quoted are called 323 and MX3 in Europe (and maybe somewhere else?)

And your parents have good taste in cars! Mazda's a really good brand. Mazda really changed since the 6 started to be sold...

The style is really different from what they did before.

Ford... awh, if you choose Ford, I think it'd be better to choose the latest ones. they're the less worth...

They improved the dynamic performance. It was really necessary and it changed when the first generation of Focus came (1998). It was a real change.

Their engines are way better than before... at least the diesel ones... even if they're still a bit noisy, compared to the others modern diesel.

They really improved the quality of the materials they use for the interior.

David S, you seem to know a lot about cars.

So you have a 205... awh... nice memories back in my mind...

even if it was a small version, 1.1 50hp, 4 gears... this car was as old as I am... lol. I had so much fun with it...

Sounds like your 205 had the engine and gearbox out of the old 104.

My brother has a Ford Fusion (The old fiesta wearing a top-hat).

Haha, that's right, that's it. this engine was common to many cars in PSA...

104, 205, 306, 309, AX, ZX and then, it's been improved to fit in 106, 206, Saxo, and even C3 and C2...

...a long life engine...

I saw someone said about the Ford's TCDI engine. Basically if you peel away the TCDI logos on the block you will find a PSA HDI engine.
