Which Albums Will Be Classics In 20 Years?

Featured Replies

Every musician wants to record a classic album, but the odds against doing it are astronomical: For every disc that earns the "timeless" tag, 10,000 wind up in the $5 bin at used-CD stores.

Yet the long-shot odds don't stop bands from dreaming. Brandon Flowers of the Killers is calling the group's new Sam's Town "one of the best albums of the last 20 years. There's nothing that touches this album." Meanwhile, Janet Jackson has titled her new work 20 Y.O., a nod to her 20-year-old smash Control.

With that in mind, we lay odds on which of these new fall releases will be classics 20 years from now.

THE KILLERS

Sam's Town (Oct. 3)

Odds: 100-1

The Las Vegas band with the '80s vibe tries to squelch critics who slammed its 5 million-selling debut, Hot Fuss, for being too derivative. The Killers reportedly toned down the new-wave influences in favor of another '80s touchstone: Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. If you're going to mimic someone, better the Boss than Duran Duran.

JANET JACKSON

2O Y.O. (in stores)

Odds: 90-1

Everyone's favorite nipple-flashing ex- Good Times star hooks up with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who've been producing her off and on since the '80s. Her last CD, Damita Jo, got a cool reception after her 2004 Super Bowl bra-ha. But the 40-year-old singer hopes danceable new songs like "So Excited" will answer the age-old question "What have you done for me lately?"

JAY-Z

Kingdom Come (Nov. 21)

Odds: 10-1

Like Ozzy Osbourne and Frank Sinatra before him, Jay-Z got so bored with retirement he decided to unretire. On Kingdom Come –his first solo CD since 2003's The Black Album –he teams with producers Timbaland, Kanye West and the Neptunes. The disc also features a duet with that noted gangsta from Coldplay, Chris Martin.

BECK

The Information (Oct. 3)

Odds: 8-1

Rock's leading Scientologist got his groove back on 2005's Guero, the follow-up to 2002's glum Sea Change. But now he's regrouped with Sea producer Nigel Godrich for The Information, although the 411 is that it's less mopey than previous work. M/p>

John Legend

Once Again (Oct. 24)

Odds: 15-1

The East Coast soul singer follows up 2004's Get Lifted, which was nominated for a whopping eight Grammys and won three (best new artist, male R&B vocalist and R&B album). The CD's producers include Kanye West – who worked on Get Lifted – and the Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am.

ON THE RADAR

Yusuf Islam, An Other Cup, Nov. 14. The former Cat Stevens delivers his first album of secular tunes since the Carter Administration. 60-1.

Hold Steady, Boys & Girls in America, Oct. 3. Critics' pet Brooklyn band tells more strange stories in the key of Jack Kerouac and Bruce Springsteen. 13-1.

Decemberists, The Crane Wife, Oct. 3. Portland's egghead folk-rockers make their major label debut with songs inspired by Shakespeare and Japanese literature. 9-1.

Tom Waits, Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, Nov. 21. A three-CD set of rarities full of tracks about mermaids, insects and Charles Bukowski. 8-1.

Joanna Newsom, Ys, Nov. 14. Mystical harp-and-voice music for the Sufjan Stevens set. 50-1.

Radiohead- Down is the new up.. (coming next year :))

Nah, unless that album is very good it won't be a classic.

Not in the same league as Sgt. Peppers or Pet Sounds.

Sam's Town might be in lists in 20 years time...

...of shite albums

you listened to all those albums you have listed?

Cat Stevens is releasing a new album?!

I mean.... Yusuf Islam.

I'd say the odds for the Killers album to be a classic would be about 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 - 1

you listened to all those albums you have listed?

Not Westlife ('cos it ain't been released yet, but I'm pretty certain it will go on that list).

And now can you NOT dislike the crazy frog album?

Cat Stevens is releasing a new album?!

:freak:

I thought he's too old actually.

In Rainbows

Neon Bible

Fleet Foxes

Merriweather Post Pavillion

Whatever People Say...

Sound of Silver

Broken Boy Soldiers

Vampire Weekend

Everyone knows that the classic album should be Strawberry Jam, not Merriweather Post Pavillion, right?

Strawberry Jam might be the fans favourite. but the general music community will remember MPP better.

Yeah. You're right. It really makes me sad though...I don't see what's so amazing about MPP

Strawberry Jam >>> MPP

I'm interested to see what albums will actually be classics.
