My Thoughts about Coldplay

Featured Replies

So I dont have any other real outlet for this so I decided to waste some people's time with this thread. Recently I have been steadily decreasing the amount of time I listen to Coldplay. I have really gotten into Radiohead this last year and I cant help but compare the two every time I listen to one of them (something I used to despise when people would come on here and talk about Radiohead vs. Coldplay). But a few things have occurred to me when I listen to both. The first thing is that on average, Radiohead's songs are overall more intricate in instrumentals and musical depth. Not always I realize, but with Greenwood's guitar parts and a 5 member dynamic, songs become more interesting for the most part. Also, one thing that really bothers me is that at this point in Radiohead's career (3rd album) they had released their best album, OK Computer celebrated as "The Best Rock Album of the Last 20 years." X&Y hardly is Coldplay's best, their worst I would say. X&Y was rushed out of production (by EMI, hardly Coldplay's fault most likely) and seemed to be full of filler love songs that are not nearly what A Rush of Blood to the Head accomplished lyrically or musically. The last major thing I noticed is that Coldplay has been together for over 10 years now and have only produced 3 LP's and a handful of EP's. It seems like Coldplay (Chris Martin) simply hasn't written enough music to keep long term fans, like me going on 4.5 years, interested.

My reason for posting this is that I am disheartened that I was once such a hardcore, download every live/acoustic/rare song by Coldplay, fan and now I am at a point where I struggle to say that they are my favorite band anymore.

Now dont get me wrong, I still love these guys. I'll always consider Chris Martin's voice the best in Rock and I consider A Rush of Blood to the Head the best album I have ever listened to. But I think the pressure is on Coldplay now. I dont think they were happy with X&Y (EMI and Capitol were) and neither were the majority of the older fans. I think they want to produce something truely amazing. I hope hope hope we can expect the 4th LP to blow our minds and I hope just as much that we get it soon.

So the real question... what do you guys think?

i guess im going to take this silence to mean you all agree with me.

Well i dunno..but radiohead and coldplay are completely different in my opinion....

Same here......dun't know why though....ok I got more into other bands....and maybe I got a bit tired of Coldplay hehe....because last year was a freaking Coldplay year for me.....

maybe my attitude will change with the next album, because I think that X&Y was a disappointment.....

Coldplay used to sound like Radiohead's b-sides from The Bends era

that's where the comparison ends between them, Coldplay after chose to sound different...

Radiohead are not the new Beatles and Coldplay are not the new Radiohead and the next "big british thing" is not the next Coldplay. forget the comparisons, jeez

all i want to say is, don't expect from Coldplay too much and don't OVERRATE them. they are not near as good as some other bands and will never be ;)

I hate to admit it, but you hit the nail on the head. I feel the same, I still love them but they got way too commercialised with X&Y, and the quality of the album was nowhere near as amazing as the other two. I hope they can win back people with a really completely different album next time around.

i love coldplay. all of their music to me is great, but i have to accept a i prefer the parachutes cd and a rush of blood to the head.

I personally think Radiohead is more talented and I enjoy them more than Coldplay, but I love Coldplay. I was very happy with X & Y but it seems like people would disagree with me. I don't really compare them because it just doesn't work to me. I think Radiohead has something about them that Coldplay will never have in terms of songwriting and just the music.

Maybe you are just sick of Coldplay. Maybe you overdid it a little. I do that all the time. I go through phases with bands constantly. Right now I have been on a Bob Dylan kick for about 4 months now. I can't get enough of him.

You make som very good points but why stop at comparing Coldplay to Radiohead? I could compare Coldplay to U2, Oasis, Elton John, The Verve, or anynumber of groups and artists.:\

A Rush of Blood to The Head is without a doubt the best most awesome record that has EVER been released by anyone and Parachutes is a breath of fresh air and one of the best albums of the millenium.:wink3:

Yes You are right OK Computer is a fantastic album and perhaps Chris and the lads DID rush out X & Y but i still think Fix You is the best song I have heard this millenium and I am sure Chris and Co are under a lot of pressure at the moment to produce new material and I'm sure they have got DOZENS of mind blowing songs already and waiting for us in their next album.:)

I'm only certain of one thing IF Coldplay were to bring out the Live in Toronto DVD RIGHT NOW or any of their Twisted Logic tour on DVD then it would obliterate EVERYTHING in the music world as this band it the GREATEST!!

^ another reason for them to FRICKIN RELEASE THE DVD!!!

My First Love is Coldplay, then Radiohead... ReLeAsE ThE DvD !!! Agree with that!

well speaking of Radiojead, these guys have done a really good job,but you know with time...they are not really that good. For me, i have got access to other great bands, but coldplay is still there in my fav list, their songs just have been sth that encourage me more sth good for the ears

Well for me Coldplay are my favourite band and I have a good feeling they always will be. I personally love X&Y! I am trying my very very very hardest I promise you to find the same faults with X&Y that so many other people are finding but I genuinely cannot find them. I don't consider any of the tracks to be fillers at all. But that's just my opinion, there's no right or wrong answer, and everyone has different opinions. Just as long as their fans remain loyal and don't start moaning about stupid things, like, for example, The Verve and Richard Ashcroft fans have a tendancy to. "Will The Verve get back together, why has Rich released that as a single, that video is crap, his solo material is rubbish (but I still bought the album and have been to see him live 10 times)" and crap like that. I really hope that Coldplay's next album doesn't get the same reviews that it has from so many fans, people who expected 'more'. C,G,J,W aren't going to release rubbish (although they have released semi-rubbish in X&Y according to some fans). I know X&Y sounds different from the 1st two albums... so??? Too many Embrace fans are like that too - 'This New Day' is too different from the good old days of 'All You Good Good People and Come Back To What You Know' bla bla bla. Sorry for ranting, it's just disheartening when people compare to other bands and previous music - people and bands change, styles change, even clothes change!!! Is anybody upset with Coldplay's image, going from t-shirt and jeans student style for Parachutes to all in black rock god/Kraftwerk/stage crew look for X&Y??? CHANGE is the key people.

i think you guys are completely right about the comparison to radiohead. sound-wise i realize that coldplay and radiohead are worlds apart and have been for quite some time.

coldplay needs to release that DVD, because live 2003 was really well done. i went and saw them twice this year and both the concerts i thought were better performances than in 2003 (even with the X&Y songs).

on one hand i want them to come out with something new really fast... but i think what they really need is to actually take a good long break, come back, and just go on a releasing extravaganza for 2 solid years... no tour. but it seems like EMI is all over coldplay and what they are allowed to do.

X&Y didnt seem as sincere as Parachutes and AROBTTH to me.

The only really good songs were A Message, X&Y, & til Kingdom Come.

But I could listen to the other albums through and through and not have to skip a single song, but I only listen to three songs on X&Y.

X was jus over produced.

coldplay cannot be expected to release an arobtth every album. to top every album they make is impossible; every (good) band faces this challenge.

so ok computer was radiohead's best

people will probably look back and say "wow arobtth was coldplay's best, and that was their second album :o "

you know?

i completely agree with you though in that coldplay was my absolute favourite, but then now i struggle to say they are my favourite when they're having difficulty keeping everyone interested.

lots of bands these days seem to release new albums a year after their previous, but i think there is also beauty in coldplay in this respect; they try not to rush their music. music isn't something that should be mechanical. it needs to come at the right time. i think coldplay just needed that one 'let down' album. it's impossible for a band to be triumphant in every lp or ep released.

i agree with you... but for instance Sleeping Sun... great song, a true testament to chris's song writing ability. its a simple, beautiful and parachutesesque, and it was kind of a side note b-side thrown on the talk single. its these kind of songs that chris martin excels in writing. songs like fog (again) live, how i made my millions and gagging order by radiohead i dont think can compare to songs like sleeping sun, help is just around the corner, I bloom blaum... so why not release some more EPs!! LP's should take a while to perfect i agree.
