David Beckham signs to mls today

OMG, why is nobody excited about this? I totally LOVE Becks and have been in love with him since his Man U days (which were his best, obviously!)!!! I'm glad he's coming here.

I mean, wow. I've always wished soccer was more prominent in the US, and that's what the MLS is trying to do by hiring Becks.

Well unfortunately it will just end up as an extension of Hollywood...........

I agree with Mark. Yes, it might be great that he wants to come here and maybe open up soccer more to Americans. But in reality....it's all about Hollywood fame. And that' the sad part. Hollywood might suck the life out of him and he'll just be one of those stars who party all the time.

And that's not to mention his "wannabe" missus!!

^ He's not gonna become a partywhore like young Hollywood (paris/lindsay).... I think if he does get sucked into Hollywood, he'll add some European style and elegance to it. Plus, they've got a young family, so I don't think they'll be out partying and doing drugs every night or anything like that...

I think it's far more likely they'll be sucked into Scientology by their new friends and neighbours, the Cruises..........................

just one question.

is the american football league popular in the us? because i've seen a few americans discussing european football on here but i never saw anyone discussing their own league.

we once met some americans in a pub who were on holiday and we were suprised how many players they knew. they supported liverpool and they said they werent interested in the american league.

just one question.

That's because the American league is third-rate league for has-beens (like Beckham) and "never-weres"!!

thats a bit harsh. i do think beckham could have played in the premiership if he didnt only care about the money.

He doesn't have the motivation any more, and none of the bigger clubs need or want him.

Therefore he's better off playing in the "showbiz" league!!

All the teams are owned by the MLS itself and until the new Beckham rule ...yes it's called that :dozey:... each team had a salary cap so everytime a team started to develope a good player, they would leave for Europe and more money. Now with this new rule, each team can splash for 1 superstar player but will have to find the money from somewhere. With Becks, the MLS is only paying for $400,000 worth (league max) of his deal, most is coming from Adidas. I have seen a few games, no where near the skill or pace of European clubs. There is only one division, so no threat or relagation. With this new rule I just like to say Ronaldino to Houston! :D

I never rated Becks as being that great, he's slightly above average at best and he's past best. They kept talking about him being "in his prime"...ummm hello! currently not good enough for his club or his country. The nerve of LA for comparing him to Micheal Jordan....please! Becks can slap #23 on his back, but skill wise, he is no fucking Micheal Jordan!

Well said!! I reckon Ronaldo "McDonald" might follow Becks, too!!

OOoOoH Ronaldo!!! I like him...

I sincerely hope that English Footy picks up here.... (I hate calling it soccer) but I'm afraid thats highly doubtful. :(

until then, I'll live vicariously thru my English friends.... and streaming video on the weekends! :)

*sighs*

Well all that we can do now is just watch...:shy:

for his sake, I hope he proves the critics wrong....... I would love 1st or 2nd string players to play here on the MLS.... and in the MLS's defense... they have gotten better throughout the years...

I hope so too. I really do hope that all the 'Hollywood' buzz is false.

Like Becks just coming to LA just for fame and for his wife's wants. :dozey: It would give international soccer a bad name. Overall, Becks is probably the most well-known football player here. Most Americans don't know any other players. It's as if MANY football players have the same motives as Becks, which as I said, I hope isn't true. There is a big possibility that it would probably happen, but let's just cross our fingers...

FFS, I'm being spammed by AEG already and the wanker isn't even here yet! :dozey:

Beckam

Last evening, I saw Beckam's press conference taking place in L.A. on CNN. He wants to boost the American team and has also made a soccer school for children as he loves kids. He'll start to play in Galaxy L.A. team in August, not before. :)

By which time Sticktoria will already have blown half his salary on Hollywood Boulevard!! Lots of Gucci to be had there!!
