Hehe it was a nice goal. But i'm really dissapointed in Alfreð the coach for not playing his best side today. If we would have won the 1st place would have been ours and therefor an easier opponent in the quarter finals. And also, I couldn't bear watching all those Germans in the stands screaming louder than the Icelanders. It was a humiliation in my books. The games best moment: Just before half-time when Logi Geirsson shot the ball in the face of one of the Germans. The f**ker deserved it :D

And his reaction to the boo-ing was class

small countries can do brilliantly in a sport if it has tradition there.

But only in minority team sports.

That's why teams like Iceland, Scotland, Wales, San Marino etc. have no chance of ever winning anything in football, which is a truly world sport.;)

but in other sports scotland and wales compete in the british team. its just different in football.

and i guess you wouldnt say that about other sports like cricket, which is basically played in britain and its former colonies.

anyway thats off topic.

And that proves my point. Their populations individually aren't big enough. That's why there have often been arguments made for a combined British football team (although this is extremely unlikely ever to happen).

Cricket generally works the same way as most team sports. The countries with the smallest populations rarely win the big competitions. All the top teams have populations of millions, certainly not hundreds of thousands............... ;)

i know but dont they just compete as england because they can? if they didnt have a chance without scotland, wales and northern ireland they'd compete as britain, wouldnt they?

yeah i know but it isnt played in many countries thats what i meant. and theres one thing which i find rather confusing. theres some countries competing together like all west indian countries.

I'm not sure. I don't think Wales and Scotland would want it to happen, anyway, as they have too much national pride.

I don't have a problem with that - that's how they have enough players to be able to compete.;)

And I think you'll find that cricket is one of the most-played team sports in the world, because everyone plays it in India, for example.;)

I just found this. If handball only has 18 million participants worldwide, that isn't many at all, and would certainly explain how a nation like Iceland could be competitive.;)

And I wouldn't count racket sports as true team sports as they need too few players to constitute a team.

I don't get this.....I mean only because it is not played in many countries probably it still can be interesting and exciting.....Mark your point was that it is simply boring but the evidence does not fit somehow....

I personally find it boring, but my main point is that if a tiny country like Iceland can be truly competitive in a real team sport, it can't be that big a sport at the end of the day.

If there are truly only 18 million people playing it worldwide, that is a drop in the ocean................................. which in turn means the world cup ultimately doesn't count for very much.;)

You know what, screw you. It's just silly to claim that success in a particular sport relies on the population of the country in question.

Also, according to you, a sport cannot be popular or fun if a small country is successful in it.

You British twats are all the same....

ever been to the uk? :P

i'm swiss btw dont get confused by the flag.

anyway i agree with everything else you said.

Not only, but in the big team sports, it counts for a lot.

That's not what I said at all. The fact is that on a global basis, handball is a relatively minority team sport. If it was as big and popular as football, I doubt that Iceland would be among the most successful teams, that's all.

There's a big difference between stating facts and being abusive.;)

None of my comments have been anti-Iceland. My main point has been that handball isn't that big a sport, and therefore the world championships aren't such a big deal........................ ;)

Judging by your "language", I also suspect that you don't actually live in Iceland, or aren't in fact an Icelander.

Not only, but in the big team sports, it counts for a lot.

Excuse my last words in the post above. They were written in fury.

And Sally I've been to the UK.

And I guess you are right about handball being a minority sport and all that. It just hurt my proud Icelandic heart which is really fired up these days :D

But I can assure you, I'm 100% from Iceland and would like an explanation on those "not an Icelander" claims :O

That's OK. If Iceland are the best at handball, that's fine by me. I just felt that too big a deal was being made about the world cup, that's all. If Iceland or a country with a similar-size population ever wins a major international team sport

competition, I shall eat "humble pie". However, I maintain that this is extremely unlikely ever to happen, for the reasons stated previously.

I am obviously aware that Iceland has some world-class individual sportsmen in sports such as rally driving, weightlifting and strongman events, but that's a different thing entirely.;)

But I can assure you, I'm 100% from Iceland and would like an explanation on those "not an Icelander" claims :O

Because some of the language you used was extremely colloquial and indicative of somebody who had spent a considerable time in the UK, that's why.

So where in the UK did you stay, for how long, and why?

I stayed in London and Manchester for 4 days because I went to Old Trafford to see Manchester United beat the crap out of the Scouce bastards :)

even if it was wrong....this was not the deciding factor I think....there were other things they decided which were not an advantage for Germany as well....
