Lyrics that Differ

Featured Replies

Most of us know all of the lyrics to Coldplay songs by heart, lol. But have you noticed that some songs cancel each other out by their meanings/purposes? Like two different songs can really contrast. Here's an example:

The Scientist: "Tell me your secrets, and ask me your questions..."

Amsterdam: "I’m sick of the secrets..."

Yes, they are two very different songs but see the opposite relation? Does Chris like or dislike secrets? You cannot tell. See what I mean? O_o Heh.

Here is another one:

Twisted Logic: "Say what you feel like, say how you feel..."

Amsterdam: "You can say what you mean but it won’t change a thing..."

Talk: "Tell me how do you feel?..."

Is saying how you feel significant or not?! :surprised: I'm confused, that's how I feel!

Anyways, that is all I really noticed. Don't get me wrong, they are still the greatest lyrics in the world. Just sometimes a little weird. What have you guys heard that sounded a little odd to you??? :P

ermm..yeah. good thread! can't think of anything to contribute off the top of my head though. :(

Don't Panic: "We live in a beautiful world"

vs.

basically all of "Twisted Logic"

one thing i can think of are lines from The Scientist, which completely cancel each other out. Kind of confuses me as well.

Nobody said it was easy

No one ever said it would be this hard

so what is it really? lol.

^i think thats the point of the scientist, saying that nobody said relationships and love were easy, but no one ever told him that it would be as hard as it ended up being, either.

i cant think of very many specific examples besides whats already here, but i can think of thematic contradictions, like see you soon vs. everythings not lost, and how much the desired simplicity of "we never change" contrasts with the built-up, modern, technical theme of all of X&Y.

Could it be the Mr Martin has decided to take a much more pessimistic view on the world these days? Or are you guys looking into this way too much?

The lyrics probably depend on the mood he's in.

^ Agreed, I think it's based off of mood. People have so many different perspectives at different times.

well a message 'you don't have to be alone, you don't have to be on your own'

and in depth in that song i am not gonna leave it until its much too late,on a platform i am gonna stand and sing i am nothing on my own.oh and i love you please come home...'

my song is love love to the loveless shown...

you're the target that i am aiming at...

i am nothing on my own..

those are good lyrics..

Damn, I'm gonna have to go see Chris and cheer him up, and bring him some new song ideas! I think the song sets kinda go through highs and low, like life does as well...

Highlighting's mine.

Nah! At least I'm not. It's just fun to compare lyrics. ;)

And for me that's the great thing of song lyrics vs. books, for example. They're little glimpses into the moment.

Though, I've read that Leonard Cohen has polished some of his lyrics for months and even years before finally recording the song - and he still adjusts and changes them afterwards.

That wasn't aimed specifically at you.

It's just occurred to me that you chose 2 songs that were spaced about 7 years apart, which was useful for my first statement :D

The Scientist: "Tell me your secrets, and ask me your questions..."

Amsterdam: "I’m sick of the secrets..."

I dunno but I think that these two ones can work out well together if you look to this side:

Like, in The Scientist, I think that ''tell my your secrets'' is kinda related to the couple's complementation. I mean, having no secrets around them in order to make themselves pretty transparent in front of each other, to make the relationship work well...And, in Amsterdam, he confirms this idea that love has to be based on confidence and transparence (dunno if this word is right) or it won't work out. As it didn't since the person the song refers to wasn't giving herself/himself completely to love...The person kept hiding secrets and this made him tired...

It's just a thought, I don't know...

yes there is a lot of meaning in speed of sound too...
