Two women are being prosecuted for flashing their breasts at a CCTV camera after it swivelled in their direction.

The camera operator alerted police and the Crown Prosecution Service decided later to charge the women with outraging public decency.

The 21-year-old friends, Abbi-Louise Maple and Rachel Marchant, said the case was a waste of public money and that police should be concentrating on catching drug dealers and rapists.

Their solicitor Chris Chatterton said: "What have we come to when cases like this appear in court?"

The women were drinking with friends on on a beach in Worthing, West Sussex, on July 16 when they spotted a CCTV camera pointing at them.

Miss Maple said: "For a laugh, we quickly lifted our tops to flash at the camera. No one else was around and we did not think it would be a problem as we have done it before."

The woman appeared before Worthing magistrates yesterday and pleaded not guilty. They elected to be tried at Chichester Crown Court.

Linda Arnell, prosecuting, said youths aged 15 were walking near the women when they were caught on camera. She said the beach where the women were was just 100 metres from a family play area.

Miss Marchant, from Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, said: "We didn't intend to upset anyone and I don't think it's that offensive because people sunbathe topless all the time.

"Everyone we have told thinks it's ridiculous."

Miss Maple, from Worthing, said: "We hope they see sense and drop it.

"We're just two young girls who were having a bit of fun."
