Radiohead the new Coldplay?

Guess that would be a compliment for some bands, but most of you probably get the irony. Kind of like when Dylan got his groove (and audience) back and was playfully tagged the new Springsteen, or whoever else had also worn the "new Dylan" tag and moved beyond it (though I'm not sure Coldplay has aspired to move beyond it, more like a refinement I think).

Just got the CD release of In Rainbows a couple weeks ago (at $8 how can you resist, record companies should really take note, although I'm not one who normally complains about high CD cost since I tend to buy less expensive indie stuff and don't particularly mind the cheapass packaging, and I'm not really thinking of it as something I'll still be spinning 10 years from now - hmm, that's like a whole post-worthy subject just in the parenthesis ), having not listened to the mp3 download at all except for a couple of the more popular songs that passed by my ears, and after a few listens it does seem kind of underwhelming on the whole.

Based on so many best of the year lists and all of the fan hoopla, I guess my expectations were higher than they should have been, but this isn't the Radiohead that made us all such big fans. Pleasant music to be sure, but no sense of adventure until almost the end of the disc. I do like the openers, but nothing really new or exciting, and they still don't seem complete, or even show any real passion for rocking out, especially Bodysnatchers which is just a vamp, almost like a couple incomplete song fragments expanded with some connective guitar riffs.

The obligatory rock tracks? Well, I won't go that far, but kind of a big letdown for a new Radiohead album as it moves into Nude (which I know is an old song that has been spiffed up for prime time, but still, doesn't work for me, they really needed an epic here, a "Lucky" to shore up the opening). The shifting dance rhythm on Weird Fishes/Arpeggi is a welcome diversion, especially when it starts building and swirling. I like that, but yikes, sounds just like Coldplay to me.

I do love Reckoner, first song on the record I can say that about. Sounds like the real Radiohead is back. And Jigsaw Falling Into Place, followed by the beautiful closer is almost enough to salvage it for me. But man, a bit too little too late, talk about an under-achievement, some of this is just too nice, too bland, especially that crucial middle section of the CD that I think is not very good at all. Have a feeling that I might be in a small minority on this, though. So how's it feel for you a couple months or so down the road? Admittedly, I'm only on about the 4th listen so I'm sure the appreciation will become more with exposure, but are you really satisfied with this? All I Need?

Even U2 has better filler than that lately!

Coldplay wishes they could make a song like Weird Fishes.

Coldplay freaking bow down to Radiohead. Nobody could ever touch a ray of Radiohead's brilliance :smug:

no offense but YEAH!

Coldplay are good at their style of music. But there music more plays with your emotions than blow you away with their brilliance.

^i do agree with that statement, but i think some of their riffs are really brilliant. and it's just a personal thing, coldplay vs. radiohead. i love both immensely, but coldplay will always be more special to me.

Coldplay:

  • Have not evolved their sound much over three albums
  • Used to write good lyrics, now I don't know what to think
  • Run away screaming from unusual song structures and odd time signatures. Although there is the Prospekt of this changing...

vs

Radiohead:

  • Have re-invented themselves each time they release an album.
  • Thom's lyrics are brilliant, sometimes topical, sometimes emotional, always meaningful.
  • Well, yeah, Paranoid Android.

To summarise:

Coldplay are a poor man's Radiohead, although I do love both.

.

they'll never be as good as Radiohead!

Good analysis. They are a poor man's version of Radiohead. Well not a cover band like some bands *cough Editors cough*

Can I play along too? This seems like an interesting discussion to add another opinion (if that is allowed).

Radiohead:

4 words come to mind to dispute this...Hail to the Theif

Thom's lyrics are brilliant, sometimes topical, sometimes emotional, always meaningful.

Is this your example of brilliant meaningful lyrics?

Last Flowers - 1st verse:

"appliances have gone berserk

i cannot keep up

treading on people's toes

snot-nosed little punk"

WTF? Brilliant? Yeah.....

Well, yeah, Paranoid Android.

Well, yeah, CLOCKS and THE SCIENTIST. Radiohead could never write these songs, so do you always like to compare apples to oranges? :P

I think even httt is a re-invented album..sit down stand up, backdrifts, where i end and you begin, myxomatosis, a wolf at the door. I think those songs are still totally different from the other albums.

Last flowers:

Too bright

too much

too powerful

I think thats meaningful.

The scientist? Come up to meet you tell you im sorry, you dont know how lovely you are..

Mayb thats why radiohead cant make those songs.. Theyre just to easy to write.

Btw..atease doesnt work at all :\

Is this your example of brilliant meaningful lyrics?

Well, HTTT isn't as brilliant concerning the flow of the songs, though the songs themselves (the majority) are more than good.

And Coldplay always write meaningful lyrics?

I drew a line

I drew a line for you

Oh what a thing to do

And it was all yellow

They didnt write songs like Clocks because they think differently...........? Their music is different, so do you always like to compare apples to oranges? :p

Radiohead are a thinking man's rock band. In regards to lyrics anyways. Coldplay songs are not difficult to write.

Coldplay were hailed as the next Radiohead when Radiohead had done all that sort of stuff and moved on.

Change things, but do not split your fanbase. As hard as that is to do (Kid A), it is what Coldplay must do for LP4.

@ coldplayismygod: Yeah, so maybe HTTT wasn't a reinvention, but more of a bringing together of Kid A, Amnesiac and their earlier records.

Clocks and the Scientist are two Coldplay songs that have been overplayed and you get sick of quite easily.

^ Yes, agreed to all statements and opinons above! :)

But, I'll add that the term "meaningful" is a very personable and relative to each individual....so it's really not up to one person to decide that for everyone else.

Don't get me wrong, I love Radiohead since I saw them perform during Pablo Honey tour (probably before most of you ever heard of them), but their lyrics just aren't meaningful to me....it's the music that is brilliant.

Come ON. Don't you think all those stupid X-Band VS Y-Band should stop ?

You are trying to compare how four people on the one hand and five completely different people on the other hand express their feelings and creativity, which cannot, as a principle be compared AT ALL.

Of course I think Radiohead's overall music beats Coldplay's by far but hey ! Chris, who'se really not as depressed as Thom, gives his songs some joy and enthusism Thom never will. Ever. This is just different.

And even though Radiohead are better in my mind, for me Parachutes is a way better debut album than Pablo Honey (haha !) and even better than The Bends.

Come ON. Don't you think all those stupid X-Band VS Y-Band should stop ?

.

No.:laugh3:

The Later-performance was really really good. Ed's backupsinging on Arpeggi/Wierd Fishes was glorious.

:smug:

It's always  Ed's great. His voice is perfect, plus he's tall  :laugh4:

Btw, did he also sing back vocals for Let Down? Or was that somebody else?

## In Rainbows No. 40 ##

Oxford rock band Radiohead have seen their 1997 masterpiece OK Computer voted the third best British album.

Britpop veterans Oasis have demonstrated their place in music lovers' hearts by securing first and second places in the new chart.

The Gallagher brothers' 1994 debut, Definitely Maybe, came top in the poll by music magazine Q and retailer HMV to find the 50 "Best Ever British Albums".

Radiohead's came third in the poll, followed by The Beatles' Revolver and The Stone Roses' self-titled debut.

The group also see their second album The Bends come in at number 11 and latest offering In Rainbows make the number 40 spot.

The rock-dominated chart also features records by The Clash, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, The Smiths and Queen.

Q editor Paul Rees said: "It's clear that, having polled three times more votes than any other act, Oasis are undoubtedly the nation's most loved band.

"Similarly, it's evident just who music fans believe the classic and most enduring British acts of each era to be.

"And, by that measure, the likes of Keane, Arctic Monkeys, Muse and Amy Winehouse have emerged in recent years to be seen as genuinely classic artists in the eyes of the people that matter most - those who buy music.
