I used to love Coldplay but now I don't

Featured Replies

Yeah. Last album really did some damage.

Really sickening songs like Fix You, What If, X&Y, A Message, The Hardest Part, Twisted logic were the final straw.

I'm also a big Radiohead fan and a musician (and that matters, well, makes a difference I think). So Coldplay were doing interesting things on Pararchutes - in terms melodies as well as decent musical ambition (slightly odd chords & clever use of them - which helped their writing seem fresh & distinct) AROBTTH moved towards more mainstream pop but had some great songs too.

Now they are too safe, too similar to many bands and they NEED to move things forward on their next album or their fanbase will be solely comprised of young girls and die hard idiots like you see at Oasis gigs.

I agree, I think that Brian Eno is the only person on the planet who can save their fourth album from being a big flop. The work Brian Eno did with Talking Heads and U2 is absolutely phenomenal.

especially U2

this is gonna be Coldplays Joshua tree

He has a reputation for stretching and expanding a band's horizons...and he doesn't let them have their way just because they're rock stars, lol.

Yeah I think that was the other thing, the fanbase worries me. I hate having to share Coldplay with young girls who are still hooked on Black Eyed Peas and all that other mainstream crap. I don't even know who mainstream crap is anymore because I'm trying to isolate myself from that type of music.

Safe=death.

There is no way that Coldplay can have major success if they stay on the path of their first 3 albums.

Yeah thats what the band needs. They need their own identity.

Okay other big turn off for me was when they played at the Grammys. It was like Chris was trying to much to be like Bono.

lol.

That was not his best vocal work either, as I recall.

True story.

and what do you want me to do ?

well.. releasing the hardest part as a single wasn't a good idea.. that song sucks ... even incluiding it in the album was not a good idea :uhoh: and the video..

100 bucks says you read nothing else in this thread.

I'm a bit disappointed by some comments but anyway.

I think i share the feeling with you, Briggins. No, i'm not saying i hate them. But i just don't listen to their song as much as i used to! And i used to listen to them all the time.

And as all we know, if you do something all the time you'll get sick of it at some point.

I listen to coldplay every once in a while though. I just don't want to listen to them too much because i know what will happen if i do that.

it feels so good to listen parachutes after some weeks without listening to any coldplay song

Since I don't listen to them regularly these days, it's almost like a treat hearing one of their songs on the radio again.:)

that's what i mean! And that's the album i like nowadays.. :nice:

what made you lose your love for them?

radiohead

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I was just about to make a thread about this too....

I mean they're still nice and they helped open up so many other bands for me but...I just don't think they're as good anymore.

you'll burn in hell too

nahhh I feel the same sometimes.. not about Radiohead because I don't like them... but I like The Beatles more than I like coldplay and I love Muse so much.. and Travis  ... coldplay helped me to discover so many good music here in this board too :D

Yay! Somebody else in the same boat as me with this issue.

I think if I do get a Coldplay craving at any point Parachutes is the album I go back to. I've tried X&Y a few times, but I just can't get into it again.

But I don't think I should be chased off the board because my musical tastes have changed.

I wish Coldplay would 'graduate' musically...that's not to say they're not great, but I want to hear that Radiohead-esque evolution Briggins is talking about. I think Brian Eno is going to really bring that out of them.

Au contraire, I think they have developed and changed considerably through the albums. A rush of blood to the head had a completely different sound and vibe from parachutes as did X&Y to AROBTTH. If someone who'd never heard of coldplay were to listen to square one after something like sparks or we never change, they would never guess they were the same band. I mean. who would've expected them to produce a song like politik to open up for coldplay at glastonbury 2002? In fact their albums (and the songs within them) are diversified enough to the point where it's very difficult to pinpoint a "coldplay-esque " sound per se. For instance. If you heard a brand new coldplay song on the radio today I don't think you'd recognise it if it weren't for Chris's vocals.

Now, it's a pretty expensive order , I think, to hope for a radiohead-esque experimentalism out of coldplay. Because frankly for any other band to pull out a Kid A after something like OK computer is sheer insanity.

:laugh3: Yeah they won't pull off a Kid A.

I guess prime example numero uno for lack of progression from AROBTTH and X&Y would be the first single off X&Y.

Speed of Sound. It has clocks written all over it, similar drumming and feel. I knew as soon as i heard that the album wasn't going to live up to all my expectations.

what ?

i just read what i think is interesting.

I go through stages, it comes in waves. I LOVE coldplay and always will. I have been a fan too long to give up on them now. I will go for a few months without listening to them at all. I will listen to alot of Radiohead (which I have been lately) then I will move on to the doors, then I will go to John Frusciante, then back to Coldplay and what always gets me back into to Coldplay is Parachutes and tons of bsides. There are a few songs I will listen to off of AROBTTH and X&Y but the old stuff is my favorite.

^True

I'm finding their old stuff the best they have...

Briggins! I have a challenge for you!

This thread got me to haul out my vinyl boxset and start randomly listening to some of the singles last night. Which put me in a massive Coldplay mood and gave me an idea... yeah, it's silly, but just play along. ;) Oh, and this won't work if you've listened to any music in the last hour or two, so give your ears a break first. Or maybe listen to the Joshua Tree first, that's what I was doing- it seems to work well as a hearing reset button.

You are being hypnotised. :dizzy: The year is 2004. X&Y does not exist. Coldplay are the critical darlings who in their short career have released two amazing albums. Radiohead released HTTT last year which was good, but certainly not their best work, and some fans are still making a stink about it. You are familiar with both bands.

Now, when you wake up, you are going to listen to the Coldplay song "Careful Where You Stand". Should you feel inclined you will follow it with "No More Keeping My Feet on the Ground", "For You", and "See You Soon", or anything that appears on the Safety EP.

You will realise that while Radiohead and Coldplay have similarities, they must be listened to in different ways, because they approach their music differently.

Now *claps hands* Wake Up!

:D

Tell me what you think, ok?

...I still love them, but Muse is creeping up on me as #1

*Kicks Matt away*

:laugh3: Ditto, except they're my #1 now. :laugh3:

I think Muse's fate was sealed as my favorite band after seeing them live in April--Holy SHIT! It was freaking mind-blowing!!! :freak:

Coldplay has dropped down on my list quite significantly--now I like Muse, Rage Against the Machine, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, and some other bands more than Coldplay. :/

Funny how just last year, I was voted biggest Chris and Coldplay fan! :laugh3: Sorry. :uhoh:

Maybe after the release of a new album my obsession will be reborn. :laugh3:

i'm not listening to colplay at the moment, i kind of took a break :D

but i know tham my love for the band is still somewhere there. Well there is still big coldplay poster in my room :D

but i'm looking forward for their next lp. I'm positive and think it will bring some decent songs :)
