Album version vs live version

Featured Replies

As you can hear in Pour Me.

The studio version is 'dry' cant find much emotion there. But when you listen to the Castles Live version.. it is many, many emotions.. thats why i always love live versions.

Hold on, there was a studio version of pour me? A version other than the hollywood bowl version from the fix you single?

There is no studio version of Pour Me, to my knowledge. I don't know where he got his information from.

My thoughts exactly, but stephanbass said it so matter-of-factly that I almost jumped out of my chair.

clocks is outstanding live, can't wait to see how they play it in the next tour

Yeah, so that post was great listing every single live song from their major albums. Only one problem. You kind of killed this thread because now there really arent any songs left. Ill try to revive it. Life is for Living (Parachutes) vs. Life is for Living (live 2003)

I'll take Yellow live sessions@aol over the album any day, but all other live versions pale in comparison to the album.

I have a real spot for that acoustic session because I used to have aol (still sort of do, but just through AIM), and I watched those videos a ton when I was just getting into coldplay. My favorites were probably warning sign(the ending was fantastic) and yellow... Something about the little quirks in his voice, especially near the end. Even though he's played piano versions on all types of radio shows and such, the AOL sessions one stands out as being the most emotional and beautiful in my opinion.

I really wonder what's going to happen to singles from their first couple albums on this next tour. I suspect there's going to be a unique theme to the live show, as opposed it just being four guys on stage to instruments. But here are some fun speculative possibilities.

Don't Panic: Maybe something to make it longer, perhaps a new intro and an extended minute long outro. Will will(lol) return to the drums and the instrumentation will be the same as the parachutes era.

Yellow: Chris picks up the acoustic guitar again, and maybe plays the first verse and chorus solo before the rest of the band joins in. Or maybe Jonny will go crazy with effects like in GPASUYF. Maybe heavy wah-wah for the intro riff.

Trouble: Back to the piano for Chris. I have a feeling the live version will fall back to the original.

In my place: Although my hopes aren't high, I'd love a change. Maybe Chris can play something (nah, he has too much fun running around like crazy)...probably same old same old.

GPASUYF: unless they're gonna breakout a heavy metal version, this song can't get much more intense. It'll stay the same as well, but jonny will come up with something new for the outro.

The scientist: same.(keepin it short)

Clocks: Something so amazing my head would explode if I even began to understand what they're planning on doing!

to me coldplay will always be remembered as an album band more than a live band. some songs like politick, AROBTTH and clocks do sound better live but its the fact that they simply dont improvise enough on stage. being a massive RHCP my expectations are quite high. but it would be nice to see the band change around the songs a bit more than they do at the moment. the band should aim to be remembered for more than chris's lyrics and voice. i'm not saying that they should do deep purple style 30minute improvs mid show but the boys need to make their shows less predictable at this point its not much more than chris changing around the lyrics. but i blame their lack of on stage improvisation and jamming on their target audience which is primarily made up of people who listen to 'pop' music with the view anything that doesnt have words to it is not a song. i dont think a long jam at the end of clocks or something will be received well at all by their fans, thats assuming johnny, guy and will are capable of such spotaneous jams without preparation.

what do you guys think? sorry mate if i've sort of taken this thread on a bit of tangent. but i think life is for living sounds better on parachutes

^I do agree with you. I thik they need to improvise now. I just dont think they were comfotable with their music abilities. I hope they are now though!

I agree. I'd like to see some 'jamming' and 'going off on one' on stage, not for too long, just enough for them to show off their ability as musicians.

I loved Low at Glastonbury 2005. The band just seemed so confident and into it, not they aren't always, but there was something special about that which I really like.

Speed Of Sound live I'm not such a fan of. The piano riff doesn't have the same impact as it does on CD.

^ I agree that they need to do more improv stuff. But not just more guitar effects and different lyrics, no. They need to come up with some surprises like solos in the middle of a song that no one would expect. Maybe Johnny goes Jimi Hendrix during Speed of Sound insted of that 3 note riff he plays for 5 seconds during the bridge. Also,I would really like to see Chris solo on piano a little. Their piano parts are always so simple and repetitive. A piano solo can sound better than a guitar solo if you do it right, and I think Chris could.

Coldplay will probably never be a live band in the sense that muse is. They generally have a more modest arrangement...no 18 minute solos. But that doesn't keep coldplay from being one of the best live acts out there because they make up for it by having great songs and performing it amazingly every time. In live 2003 they didn't jam on the side or anything, they merely performed every song perfectly, time and time again, and frankly I've never seena better live show. Not to say they bring nothing new to the live show, they made a AROBTTH and spies ten times better with their intros and outros and jonny's slide solo...those aren't the only songs either, I have seen martin improv on the piano on a whim during politik and speed of sound among others...

^^

mate you are 110% right. but the only thing is that every improv is the same night after night which means that hardcore fans like me who will most probably download every recording i can get my hands on will find the shows very predictable. but there was something special about live 2003 i think it was the raw emotion and simplicity of the show. i am yet to find a TLT show that i like. i hope they bring that back in 08/09

'2732' do u mind since i've sort of re-killed off this thread if i put a couple of songs up myself.

what if (X&Y) vs what if (toronto 2006 or any show that you went to)?

hu hard choice, maybe live cause Johny's solo is better live.

I think coldplay more than improvement (and improvisation) on songs live is about lights show and sound. One of the few exceptions is gpasuyf where Johny goes crazy with the guitar at the end.

Don't panic (parachutes version) vs Don't panic live 2003

oh man that's tough. If you had said glasto 2002 I would've gone with the live version, but for some reason they cut off jonny's intro at sydney, so I'm going with the album version.

Trouble(album version) vs. Trouble(live 2003) vs. (Trouble X&Y)
