On March 2nd, Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails released a 36 track instrumental collection called 'Ghosts I-IV.' Exclusively available on their website (ghosts.nin.com), the first 9 tracks can be downloaded for free while the entire collection of 36 tracks in DRM-free format plus a .pdf file of artwork and wallpapers can be purchased for just $5 USD. Also available are a pre-order of the physical 2CD with a download key for the online version, as well as deluxe editions with vinyls and DVDs etc.

Being a huge NIN fan, I'm thrilled that he has also chosen to go the way Radiohead had with In Rainbows. I actually torrented the whole collection because I'm a poor college student, but it's still amazing to see the large number of people who instantly shell out money directly to the band for the online music. I hope more high-profile artists embrace this idea.

I just downloaded Ghost I out of curiosity, and I'm on track two atm. I havn't really listened to NIN before, but I'm liking it! The album art for each track is a very nice idea.

I'm not really a fan, but its nice to see other artists following in Radiohead's footsteps

Yeah it's all pretty good. I've listened to it twice already, but it's still a whole lot of music to process. Plus, there aren't any real track names to memorize either. :P

The art book and everything is really cool too. I wish I could buy the deluxe version but I really don't have that much money to spend. I do plan on getting this in physical form next month when it comes out though.

I love NIN, but I hadn't heard of this yet. What a great bit of news.

EHem...anyone remember my little rants about how the industry is changing and the labels are going the way of the dinosaur?

Nice move, Trent!:)

hehe, glad to see Radiohead had some influence on other bands. :)

Downloaded it the other day, sounds great! Good creative idea.

its the new wave of the future... and probably the only way artists can get their rightful share of the profits..... :)

Big bands releasing free music online will only harm the industry.

The classic view of things is that a big band releases a big selling album, some of that money gets put back into new artist development, allowing the record label to take a risk with a potentially great albums, which might or might not get the coverage they need. If the labels don't get the money in from the big band sales, then they won't have the money to promote new bands, taking risks, and only going for middle-of-the-feeling-road style bland music

Reznor seems to have ended In Rainbows' consistent top-10 appearances on last.fm's weekly tracks.

Both are free online downloads. Interesting.

And of course we have some Amy Whinehouse in the mix.

Eww. She was actually the first to kick Radiohead out of first (they still had 2-10 though) just after she won all those Grammys. I don't like her. At all.

Yeah I'm not a fan at all........I'm enjoying the first 9 songs of Ghosts...I'll have to download the rest later.

Yesterday he released another song online. This time it's 100% free!

The cool thing, though, is that in the ID3 tag there's a comment that reads "Go to http://www.nin.com May 5"

I'm excited. :D

Seems there's 2 more Ghosts (37 and 38) out there, as well as a new single "Echoplex."

Tomorrow's the big day!

Trent's done it again! Another Radiohead that is. This time it's "The Slip" - a proper album this time. And it's 100% free! Downloading now. :D

I hate to say it, but he's kicked Radiohead's ass. 320kbps. FLAC. 24/96 WAVE!! (1.2Gb for an album??!!!!?!?!?!?!)

Artwork.

PDF's

Everything.

And the most shocking bit, the music isn't half bad either!!!

I'm not a NIN fan, but after hearing Discipline last week, and now this album, I'm a convert :D

The Slip (2008)

Download it FOR FREE!

I downloaded it earlier, but I had a final exam this morning, so I didn't get to listen to it until now. Good stuff, very minimalist.

true.... but with the internet... who really needs the label to help promote great bands???? Label's only interest is in their pocket.... they care nothing about artists integrity or music.

The Four of Us Are Dying is incredible, as is Demon Seed. I have to let this album grow on me more though.
