Oenona
A month ago I applied for a programme called Erasmus because I wanted to study abroad during one term and last week I was told that I've been offered a place at the University of Aberdeen. Now I've got a some questions because I'm not sure about what to do regarding the accommodation. I'm going there on my own and I suppose that the right choice would be to look for accommodation offered by the Uni (the halls of residence) because in this way it'd be easier for me to get to know other people. Anyway, I'm not sure whether I should look for a shared bedroom or a private one? About the catering, do you think it's better to cook for yourself or to have someone else to do it for you if the difference of prices between a self-catered and a catered accommodation isn't that big? But I'm afraid I won't like their cooking because I'm used to the Mediterranean Diet... I'm also concerned about the language. I know some Erasmus students who came to my Uni expecting my teachers and other pupils to use Spanish but they realised that most of the lectures were given in Catalan too late, a language that they didn't even know it existed and I wouldn't like this to happen to me there with the Scots language. Is it widely used? For me it's gonna be difficult with the English because in my country people don't really use it, it's not spoken and it's gonna be a change in my life overnight... and I do hope I'll be able to handle this change. I'm sure that other questions will arise in my mind sooner or later too. I'll post them ... Do you have any advice (in general) or whatever? :)
Black Rose
The Scottish language isn't wildly used these days One bit of advise is to bring some winter clothes, as it gets cold up north But well done :)

Oenona
Thanks for your replies, I thought this thread would die without any one! :nice: I've checked the average temperatures and precipitations for each month and it's such a COLD place, it looks like it's winter all the time over there. So yeah, I'm gonna take winter clothes, I've been thinking about it! Hopefully I'll get used to the bad weather but I know it's gonna be difficult because it is so much better in my country. Cheers Daryl, I've looked for some flights and I didn't find any direct one!! :O I think that, first off I could fly to London and afterwards take another plane to go to Aberdeen. And speaking about Barcelona, I don't think it's going to snow even if these days have been really cold. Here it snows once every ten years or so. I'll probably get a private room because it'd be awkward to share it with someone I don't know and I might go for a catered one, as you said, but I still have to consider all the options that I've got although at the moment I reckon this is the best one! Mariana, it's nice to see that you're back!! And it'd be lovely that you were offered a place on your Brookes! I'm sure we could meet each other! Has anyone any idea of what this "vacation retainer" and "utility charge" is? I suppose it's an extra fee but still I don't get if this has to be paid monthly or only once or what?! http://www.abdn.ac.uk/accommodation/grid.shtml

Petit Prince
you dont have to fly to london. easyjet fly to newcastle and i think ryanair fly to glasgow. you could also fly to liverpool of course. nah i wouldn't recommend you that but we should definitely meet at some point
