yeah i'm going to see them next week, i'm really looking forward to it. i can't even imagine them being more intense than ATDI, but from the sound of their record (and the three song ep from last year) they seem to be.

man i was going crazy looking for their new album yesterday cause i had to put it up on this hits wall section of the store im working at.

are they any good? what type of music are they?

Tom, you were hungry hungry hippos regional champ? I was all state baby, see you at the nationals!

dude have to tell us about how MV were, have a great time!

i`d call it experimental rock

yeah, WAY experimental! It's like Post everything! It's like Post rock jazzfusioncore bluesfunkpunk...i'm making up genres here, you get the idea, they rock basically!

i read on their website that the album is a concept album about a guy who tries to kill himself by overdosing on morphine, but he goes into a coma and has weird dreams and his conscience starts battling itself, then he finally comes out of the coma and successfully kills himself.

written about an old friend of cedric's, apparently.

so is that like post comatic suicidal irony rock? Bring it on

aah..we should be getting paid for these genre names...journalists are usually way too slow in picking these things up, but then very few of them know the first thing about music :P

*YOINK*

Ok as of yesterday I now own this album and am somewhere out to sea because i've been blown away....this album is INTENSE!! Multiple listens beckon...it's way beyond ATDI, makes them sound like a boy band! I'm gonna get that lyrics/story booklet when it becomes availabe..this is a future cult classic, philosophy/psychology classes should examine it  ;)

what's cedric name?

i keep seeing cedric bixler and then theres cedric zavalas but its the same guy

should it be hyphenated like rodriguez-lopez or something?

OOOOH and i have to brag

I SCORED A SPARTA ALBUM FOR SIX BUCKS! WOOT

It's Omar A Rodriguez - Lopez & Cedric Bixler Zavala....

I think "Flea" has the right idea ;)

tom's concert review, the mars volta at the theater of living arts, philadelphia, pa, july 16, 2002:

a few months ago, i read about a guy at a mars volta show who yelled out for "one-armed scissor," prompting a rather nasty response from cedric. now, i can't really blame the guy... for all the great songs and great musicians in that band, they just aren't that good live.

terrible mix aside (that wasn't really their fault, i guess, although they probably had a say in who was behind the mixing desk), the show was completely predictable (a complete run-through of the album is not a good idea, even if it is a concept album), and there just wasn't the amazing intensity that at the drive-in had. also, somebody forgot to tell omar that he is not the only person in the world who can make a lot of noise with his delay pedal. there's a reason i only do that kind of thing in my room by myself: it's self-indulgent and boring. i can't really say it added to the mood because while he was leaning over his guitar making random noise (often for literally 6 or 7 minutes at a time), the rest of the band just kind of stood around looking bored, except for the drummer, playing random wanky fills.

good things:

- saul williams, beat poet opening act, had more stage presence and intensity than all five m.v. members combined

- eriatarka was just as amazing as i was hoping it would be

- drummer is FANTASTIC

- cedric actually came into the crowd and stood about 5 feet in front of me to watch the set by Riot Coalition, and from what i saw, he was quite nice to his fans (a friend of mine says he saw the bassist from a.t.d.i. but i must have missed him)

i don't know why i wrote such a long review that only 3 people will read and nobody will care about, but oh well.

*sits up*

thanks for the review dude, very insightful :)

If i ever catch 'em live i'll write one as well.

TOM PEED IS (still) SO FRICKIN COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyways.. back to my Wiretap Scars..

it says advanced copy on it.. and on the back it says 'promotion only. not for sale'

do you think that it really was a promo?

and if so.. is it the same thing as the regular one? sleeves and all?

yeah it probably is a promo then...& yeah they're more or less like the regular ones..they've been mastered & engineered at the studio the same way...it's the exact same recordings as the regs, only difference is that the promo cds are sent out to reviewers, shops, stations, etc...for advanced listens..an industry thing...some can be rare and worth money, depends, more often though their pretty common, i own loads of promos...now what's really cool is to get hold of unmastered demo cds from the studio, before the finishing touches are added, you can find them in some shops if you look around i've got one by the Bellrays (garage rock) that i found in London & it's got a different track order & a rougher sound to it.

mmmmmmm i dont think mine's worth anything

the music's definitely all the same but it's just the cover art and sleeves that are different (i really dont have any liner notes, just a sheet of black paper with a pic of a telephone inside)

yeah some joker probably just banged together some photoshop action for the sleeve/cover & put the cd in & viola you got yourself a promo ;) Funny they went to all that trouble with the cover art and all, most of my promo's are just a white sleeve with black text..pretty visually boring- i feel cheated! heehehee :)

but it looks pretty authentic ... as a promo

hehhe "and viola"
