ok

ok well i think we figured out the problem.

i've had music theory for songwriters.

dr. boss and piano world have music theory for classical musicians.

theory for songwriters says minor keys are always natural unless stated otherwise.

theory for classical musicians says minor keys are harmonic since a natural minor is the same as a major key.

got it.

they should really get the assumptions to match. that's not cool for fellow musicians.

Oh dear. I accidentally listened to VH 51 times in a row.

YES YES YES! Thats it! The same problem occurs when naming chords. Guitarists generally learn one name for a chord, when in actuality the names change. C7 for example is only called that in the key of F major for example, etc... Well done for spotting our main downfall.

yeah i think i just did the same.

In the piano world website, scroll down the list of scales until you get to "Pure Minor" - that one is the correct minor scale as we know it. I have no idea what's going on with the earlier one listed as "Minor". It's like a Major with a flatted 3rd note.

It also doesn't show any difference between 9 chords and 7 chords... Somebody in charge needs to whip that program into shape.

[EDIT: Apparently you guys found the problem between me starting and ending my post.]

I honestly can't even tell where this D# controversy is stemming from. I have no issue wth that particular note, and never in a million years would I have thought that it was an accident. However, I'm not afraid to admit that Chris certainly hits some bum notes in other spots. ("Cross" at 1:50 is painful)

And minor9 chords are the shiz. The one used in this song is a very nice touch.

haha

haha.

cool.

now we should all start a band since we obviously know what the hell we're doing.

THAt's what I mean about the same language, different dialects. If you put a classical pianist and a rock guitarist in the same room, it can get confusing even though they're essentially talking the same language. I live with it in my band, lol. It's amazing we get anything written together. Maybe Chris and Jonny are like that too.;)

Oh yeah, we're supposed to be arguing about that D# aren't we?! hahahahahahahaha. Whoops. Went a bit off track...

haha.

Here here! But let's not start off by covering VH, or we'll break up mid-way through our first rehearsal!

I don't know anything about all this stuff, but I always assumed that there are no rules. Why is it a mistake? It's a piece of art, not some item that is made in a factory.

yeah. that sounds good. before band practice though lets smoke a joint to relax after this stressful day...

haha oh man we already got drugs involved, we're doomed! no to tell you the truth though, dont get me wrong, i like a little smoke or drink now and then... but i hate it before practice or doing a show. i totally cant do it, it just makes me have to focus too much, to the point where it kills it for me. i do like to drink a beer before the show to soothe my nerves a little bit, but i could never understand how people can get so shitty before a show and rock out...

Some of you guys sound like bored pompus jerks. I don't think any of the guys in Coldplay are classically trained.

Who gives a crap if it's not the exact notation of the scientific equation of the treble clef..blah blah dee blah blah!

Just say you don't like it!

The guy said he loves the song, alright!? he was just critiquing some parts just we all do. I'm tired of everybody attacking this guy for knowing a little bit about music. It's not being the least bit arrogant. did you not notice the carefully written intro paragraph? Give him a break.

no one is perfect!

everyone does mistakes even me too but i am not getting pointed out this much!:laugh3:

gee, thank you. finally, someone on my side. lol. no, i understand, people get defensive about their songs that they love... i'm the same way. however, i was never trying to bash it, or sound like a bitch (i'm a chick by the way... but thats ok haha) .... i was simply just stating my opinion on the overall production behind it and i thought the D# was just odd and maybe unintentional, thats all. i totally accept any debates disagreeing with it, and i understand how people will assume i'm making a big deal over something so small, but people dont have to be so harsh! geesh. the only reason i decided to make a thread about it was because i noticed it right away when i first heard it this morning, and when i showed it later to my dad, whose opinion i value, he noticed the same thing without me mentioning it beforehand.

i think people are so afraid to NOT like this song that anyone who dares to not absolutely adore it is a heretic or something. i even admitted i love the song, i was just a bit underwhelmed by eno's production. for all the money i'm sure it costs to hire him i was just expecting a more thorough job, in my opinion. thats all.

it certainly isn't particularly innovative

I'm the same re: booze and gigs/rehearsals. I 'm a musical control freak, and I don't like losing control of my performance or awareness of the others in the band. After the gig, all bets are off though, lol.

And yes, the OP stated points that we may or may not agree with, but it's their prerrogative (sp?). The majority posting here are musicians, and we're entitled to discuss the song from our frame of reference just like anyone else. Give them a break!

I love the song too, but this is absolutely correct. I've posted in the groupie threads...hell, I've started a couple, lol, but it's NOT the perfect song.

yeah i gotta stay clear of those IPA beers before a show... (Always strong alcohol content, like 8-9%). i always drink them cause i love hoppy beer, but i'm only about 115 lbs, so after a few, the lyrics are starting to get a little hazy in my head and i start thinking, "oh shit...." haha....

but hell yeah, after the show, that's the whole point. i get so stressed out before the show, worrying about setting up everything properly, getting the sound right, performing well, etc..that the whole point is to unwind a little bit afterwards with your friends! plus the fact they usually give you free drinks afterwards always helps... :)

like i said on the 2nd page, i commend you for even picking that d# up.

you have quite the ear there gretta :)

Wow, I come back and this thread has ballooned. :dizzy: It's giving me a headache. But in a good way. Glad you're around to bring a little bit of experience to it all, Tracie.

I like having a good discussion about theory too. Learning alot just from the way all the different people approach it. And it's bringing back alot too. Pity about the slagging. I haven't seen a good theory discussion like this ... well, probably ever around here.

But sorry to bring up the minor key kurfuffle again, aren't there 3 distinct types of minor keys? And doesn't one of them shift the 6th and 7th notes depending on whether you're going up or down? Can't remember the name. But yes, I was taught to assume natural minor as well.

i've always been so envious of people who have perfect pitch (and i know a few... if you've never seen them work in person before... it's so unsettling... uncanny haha...) but one thing i've always been able to do is pick out melodies well in a song. i'm always the one tuning my friends' guitars when there's no tuner around. however, i can't name the notes i hear off the type of my head (like perfect pitch people) for the hell of me....

Know the feeling. I love music, I love trying to write it, and since I can't really play or sing I've ended up focusing on how it works. But even then I have to sit down and figure every little thing out since I can't do it in my head. Drives me around the bend. :(:laugh3:
