Woolies launches Coldplay price war

Source: Midweek Chart report

By Ben Cardew

Woolworths’ download store is to sell the new Coldplay album for under £5, in a move that it admits could spark a price war among retailers.

Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends goes on sales globally tomorrow (June 12) and Woolworthsdownload.co.uk is to offer the album for just £4.97 to the first 5,000 customers.

Woolworths sees the offer as important publicity for its new store, which launched at the end of May. However, it admits that with its price likely to be £2 cheaper than other UK download stores, it may spark a price war.

“£4.97 is a stunning price for any new release album, let alone the hottest release of the year,” says Woolworths music trading manager Alan Hunt.

“Value is extremely important to Woolies customers and this is an example of us driving down prices as much as possible for our digital customers as well as our online and in-store customers.”

I think it was them did a similar thing with one of the Harry Potter's. The first batch was sold at a ridiculously low price til they'd sold out, then the next batch was a similar price to other stores

Coldplay’s Viva La Vida sold 20 a minute at Woolworths

Coldplay’s hugely anticipated new album was released on June 12th and has been flying off the shelves at Woolworths stores at a rate of 20 copies every minute.

The sales rush sets the album, called Viva La Vida, on course to be the biggest selling record of 2008. Over 302,000 CD and download sales in the first three days alone ensured it hit the top of the UK album chart. The previous week’s number one album, Paul Weller’s 22 Dreams, sold 63,000 in its first week of release.

“The new Coldplay album has been selling at the rapid rate of 20 copies every minute this morning at Woolies,” says Alan Hunt, Woolworths’ CD and DVD trading manager on release day morning.

“They are currently the biggest British guitar band and they are certainly the biggest draw at the tills. Any new Coldplay release is an event in stores like ours and this morning hasn’t disappointed with thousands of fans rushing in to be one of the first to own the CD.”

Viva La Vida has also topped the US Billboard charts, selling a staggering 720,000 copies in the opening week.

The album costs £9.97 at Woolworths stores for the CD, the album is also available to download from http://www.woolworthsdownload.co.uk for £4.97.
