Martin walks out of BBC interview

Martin walks out of BBC interview

Coldplay singer Chris Martin has walked out of a BBC interview while promoting the band's new album.

Nine minutes into the pre-recorded interview for Radio 4 arts show Front Row, the 31-year-old asked to leave the studio as he was not enjoying himself.

The band's drummer, Will Champion, was left to answer questions from presenter John Wilson until Martin returned for one final question.

Coldplay's new album, Viva La Vida, was released on Thursday.

'Journalistically twisting'

Martin appeared uncomfortable with the interview from the outset.

When asked about a speech he made at a music awards ceremony in 2005 where he said the band would be away "for a very long time", Martin said: "I always say stupid things and I think Radio 4 is the place that will most remind me of that."

The band had French Revolution-style uniforms made to promote the album

Presenter Wilson questioned whether the new album - full title, Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends - was a morbid reflection of the band's lyrical obsession with death.

"I wouldn't agree with you there at all, no," said Martin.

"I'd say you're journalistically twisting me into saying something I don't really mean."

A few minutes later, Martin said he was "not really enjoying this" and that he did not really like "having to talk about things".

Champion answered the remaining questions before the frontman returned to answer a final question, about finding new musical territory, with the response: "Um....yes...yes, yes....exactly..."

Sales figures released by the Official UK Charts Company confirm Viva La Vida sold 125,000 copies in its first day on sale.

It looks certain to be number one in this Sunday's album chart despite only being released towards the end of the week.

Anyone getting concerned with these moodswings? Chris needs to get himself together before it starts giving the entire band a bad image.

Chances are something upset him before the interview and he was just pissed from the get go. How much do you want to bet he's been reading reviews? Maybe he expected them all to sing Coldplay's praises this round and he's upset that they are still slagging them off.

I feel bad for him, but at the same time...he needs tougher skin. I wish he had a lot more confidence in their work.

Poor Will though, lol.

Will's the good backup man for Chris. You never know, he probably reads the news articles and sees this. But I think he needs to relax and hold things in. He needs to bite his bottom lip and pull it together. There's probably hundred of people that can't stand Coldplay, but it's those few writers that are the ones that are heard the loudest. Thanks for this article.

Good for him! Why do people expect celebrities to be perfect?

There is a difference between having bad days and always acting like a moody toddler...

Chris is creating a bad rep for himself and the band. The rest of the other guys are human as well.

I've been keeping an eye on how that story has been spreading. Was only in UK papers this morning. It just started hitting some of the big US ones within the last 3 or 4 hours, and it gets more warped every time it's repeated. :(

This story is going to be around for a long while to come I fear.

well i was embarassed by it, chris is acting like a kid, but i can barely understand this...he's sensitive, grew up getting picked on, and whenever he senses any criticism he brings the claws out. i hope he gets over that cuz he's gonna face it a lot more, but he kinda embarassed the other guys too. except will, he came out of it looking professional and level-headed. and thankfully guy and jonny weren't there.

^The guy doing the interview was a stuffy prick who didn't get Chris at all and apparently hadn't listened to the album. Maybe it would have been better if Chris had stayed in spite of all that, but with all the pressure and his high-strung personality I really can't blame him for leaving.

Not that any of the stories seems to be doing a very good job at getting the stuffy prick part across, unfortunately. :dozey:

i heard a different interview then, cuz the guy was informed and asked good questions, and the question he asked about viva la vida was fair...and he even worried that he had said something wrong and will had to reassure him.

i doubt chris would last 5 seconds on bill o'reilly's show haha.

There were some good questions in an intellectual sense. But think of the last time you had to write a really painful book report for school and the teacher wanted you to write about all sorts of obscure metaphors and meaning you didn't see there or that even outright contradicted what you though the book was about. (I was an english major... saw a lots of it.) Now imagine it was your own book. Mega awkward.

He was asking those sorts of questions about Coldplay lyrics. Some songs can stand up to that, but not Coldplay ones, not the way Chris writes them.

Yep. Chris is on his period or something...

I thought the interviewer was mostly fine, maybe a bit heavy on the questions, but he obviously didn't really get Chris' sense of humour unfortunately. I have to say this is the first time I can say that it was Chris with the problem, not the interviewer. I like his sense of humour, but he doesn't need to joke around ALL the time, right? I got the impression that he didn't want to give the interviewers questions much thought... in which case, he should really take some time off of doing these interviews if he knows they're getting a bit overwhelming. The whole 'morbid' fiasco was just the guy's opinion (ok, a misguided one maybe), and he may have been persistent and heavy on the questions, but really. All the interviews up till now have been light hearted and mostly off topic, but as soon as it came to this one aimed at addressing the nitty gritty of the record, for some reason Chris wasn't able to handle it. Just because the interviewer was trying to be serious about the whole thing doesn't really making the bad guy here, in my opinion. I think maybe Chris should take some time out from these interviews, if he knows he won't be able to cope with some of the tougher ones. Just my opinion.

THe Sun also said he walked out on another newspaper a few days ago. Even for Chris this is getting worrysome. I'm not going to find fault with him, but he's seeming even more sensitive than usual lately. I hope the pressure isn't getting to him too much. Even Steve Lamaq said at the end of the 6music interview that the guys seemed stressed in the beginning. Chris: Take a deep breath and know you're loved.:)

Yep. Chris is on his period or something...
:shocked2::sick::laugh3::(:thinking::sneaky::\ :lol: :lol: :lol:

Or he could have just been having a sugar crash from too much chocolate.

They're going to blow this way bigger than it really is, "journalistic twisting" lol it sounds like there was an epidemic of sorts in the interview with that.

f*cking journalists! leave alone Coldplay!

they are great no matter what you say!

Ok, Everyone. Chris Martin and his entire band are going to take over the world. It doesn't matter what he does. He's taking over the ENTIRE EARTH!

Ah, so he's storming out of interview due to his delusions of grandeur???

Hey Chis! Ruling the world's not as great as you might think...in fact I heard this really great song about that very subject!!!:laugh3:

This IS a joke, btw. I'm not seriously ragging on Chris!

Chris has to realize then that not every interview is going to be a blast...instead of being bratty everytime something happens that he doesn't care for.

He's said it himself...with any job you have to deal with pests, things you'd rather not deal with. But he said then "I don't mind." Yeah, sure.

I'm only concerned because he's not a bad guy, but his moodswings...if he doesn't put them in check..in some area of his life it's going to bite him in the ass.

Exactly. I said something like this in another thread. He needs to calm down before he gets really uptight and burns himself out. There's a long tour ahead, so he's going to have to accept some bad along with the good.

My friend (Who is a psychologist) thinks Chris may be bi-polar. That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. Bi-polar people tent to be highly creative, perfectionists, and react very suddenly and unpredictably. (and knowing there are some on the board, I'm not trying to pigeon-hole anyone...this is a very generalized statement.)

If he is then I'd feel bad for criticising him, lol. But I hope there is someone in his life that he trusts that can be like, "Dude, you need to calm down. If someone asks about your kids or your wife, just nicely decline to answer. If a question is too hard or detailed, ask for a simplification or correct the person and answer (respectfully) in a way you see fit."

I don't know...it just annoys me that now I'm beginning to see people say that Coldplay are a bunch of pricks when I know that's not the case.

Chris seems like someone that just wants to make music, but doesn't want to deal with any part of the celebrity aspect of it. Maybe he should be like Michael Jackson and become a recluse. :laugh3:

It's just gotten worse as time goes by...go back and watch earlier interviews and he was a lot more easy going.

on a day where tim russert dies... this is the leading story at yahoo.com.... like... i could ALMOST understand if it had something to do with the release date.. but this story isnt even important..

^i'm horribly upset by tim russert :bigcry:. he was one of my favorite political journalists out there.

i've always wondered if maybe chris was a bit bi-polar as well. from what i know, he seems like he could be.

while the interviewer was stuffy and perhaps should have upped his knowledge of chris and number of listens to the album before interviewing them, i don't think he was out of line. all the other radio interviews we've heard so far have been great because chris knows the hosts well, or at least knows what to expect from them because he's been with them before. knowing his personality, i understand why he acted like this. however, i read all the comments in the thread about it before downloading and listening to the interview, and once it was over, i realized i expected the interviewer to be worse. the interviewer could have been a bit more sensitive, but chris could have been a bit more chill too. at least he was polite about leaving, not storming out in anger. even if the line "i don't like to talk about things" was kind of ridiculous :P.

i thought will was absolutely fantastic, but from what he said, i got the sense that this is the thousandth time he or guy or jonny has had to excuse chris to people who are a bit surprised by his reactions sometimes. he's either a teddy bear or a bomb waiting to go off (with a small, generally polite explosion when it does go off), and while i can't imagine being in his position, i just thought he would have gotten a bit better at managing himself by now.

Why is Chris even bothering to do an interview for Radio BORE anyway?? The people listening to that station are usually into Brahms, Beethoven and Nigel Kennedy!!:dozey:

haha i just listened throught the interview for the first time. i think it's really funny. but you can tell from the START chris is in a bad mood. i dont think it had much to do with the host... i feel like he just went into the interview with the idea that he wasn't gunna like the guy. idk... i love chris though.
