June 23, 200818 yr Ok! I'm trying to keep all the facts and numbers related to Viva la vida in a topic! I'm finding more difficult this time seeking all the "numbers" compared to the X&Y period Uk: First week (actually three days) 302'000 copies USA: First day: 316'000 copies Has anybody found this Uk/Usa week results?

June 23, 200818 yr Viva La Vida is first British single to top the US charts in 10 years. Last one was Wannabe by Spice Girls in 1997 source: http://www.mirror.co.uk/showbiz/latest/2008/06/23/coldplay-first-band-to-top-us-singles-charts-in-10-years-89520-20618191/
June 23, 200818 yr Author actually it's the last british single from a band in ten years! after the spice girls also james blunt (2006) and leona lewis (2008) scored the first position (but they are obviously solo artists) and i've read that the last british rock band to score a number one in the us chart did it in 1991! we're talking about seventeen years folks ^__^
June 23, 200818 yr It makes me wonder how they classify the different types of music... Of course, Coldplay are a rock band, but for me VLV is a (really great) pop song.
June 23, 200818 yr And they're at the number 1 in 58 countries  from an Italian newspaper (link just to quote the source) Translation: Extraordinary success for Coldplay. With their lastest album 'Viva la Vida', the english band topped the charts in 58 Countries, including Italy, UK and above all the USA, where it had been ten years since the last english band being at number one. This result had been announced by a series of sensational records based on on-line pre-orders: it's the most pre-ordered album on iTunes' history, in USA and Italy specifically, where it established a world record reaching the number one position after just 8 hours. During the first week of the digital release on http://www.coldplay.com, the first single, Violet Hill, was downloaded more than 2 millions times, fourfold the sale volume of all the other singles in the UK chart on the same week.

Hmm I think you can classify it as rock. Think about Elenor rigby by the Beatles or Bittersweet symphony. Many rock songs have odd instrumentation.
June 23, 200818 yr Viva La Vida (single) Coldplay are the first British act in 37 years to have held the No. 1 position on both sides of the Atlantic simultaneously. Rod Stewart last turned the trick in 1971 with the song Maggie May. http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/music/article4197592.ece
