In the UK? I doubt it.

The average woman's handbag is stuffed full of more than £342 worth of everyday essentials, a study has found.

The study also found most women carry a total of three credit, debit and store cards, but one in twenty shopaholics have more than ten flexible friends.

Experts calculated the typical handbag now contains a mobile phones worth £105, an MP3 player costing £47 and a £28 purse.

 

Add to that a leather organiser worth £40, make-up totalling £18, an average of £28 pounds in cash and the cost rockets.

This means collectively the nation's women step out the house with a staggering £7bn worth of kit hanging over their shoulders.

 

The study was carried out by http://www.itsmyid.co.uk, makers of high-tech passport covers which protect documents from cloning.

 

Yesterday Victoria Barrett, of http://www.itsmyid.co.uk, said: 'I think £342 is a conservative estimate.

'Many women also carry photographs in their purses or keepsakes from family which are unlikely to ever be returned if your bag is lost or stolen.

 

'This research shows that it's paramount to keep your belongings and identity safe.

'But what it doesn't take in to account is the cost of losing your ID if your passport is cloned, let alone getting new keys cut for your house or car and the inconvenience of having to cancel your credit cards and pay for a new driving licence.

'Material items can be replaced but once a criminal has stolen your identity it takes a considerable time to rectify the havoc that can be caused.'

One in twenty girls keep designer sunglasses worth £100 in their bag.

The study also revealed nearly two thirds of women (60 per cent) carry documents in their handbag, which contain their name and address, as well as their house and car keys.

 

Alarmingly 71 per cent of women said they often have their passport or driving licence in their handbag.

 

It also emerged an unfortunate 18 per cent of women have had their handbag either lost or stolen and as a result nearly one in 20 had their identity stolen.
