Nail biters?

Featured Replies

like chavi, i've just never really seen the desire to bite nails. well, sometimes when i break one and don't have nail clippers or a file handy, i'll bite off the piece, but that's about it. i'm a pretty big germophobe too, so putting my fingers even near my mouth when i'm out and about kind of grosses me out anyway. i always swat away the hand of the kid i nanny when he tries to bit his nails, especially when he's just been digging in the sandbox or had his hands all over the seats and railings in a tram. yuck.

question: do you eat/swallow the pieces that you bit off? do you spit them out? i never knew. maybe that's why people spit so much on the sidewalk or grass (another habit i never really understood).

my problem with my nails is just forgetting/not getting around to cutting them. i used to take really good care of my nails and always had them painted and done, but now i just kind of forget about them and they get too long. right now they're on the verge of getting to be too long again...where are my nail clippers?

i turn into a nail biter from time to time.

like... three times a year? hahaha. there's probably a reason for it. i'm nervous and something. then i can't stop for a few days/weeks and when i suddenly want long finger nails again i just let them grow. and put nail varnish on them to keep me from biting them. so that does work.

we once had this conversation in english class. "what could be the biggest turn-off for guys?" and for some reason a lot of my class mates said,"when she's biting her nails."

erm. i didn't even know it was such a big deal!

hahah i actually swallow them all

That's part of the fun i guess...

:uhoh:

Hahah

Well I don't actually eat my nails but have some compulsive habbit of puting pens, pencils and other stuff in my mouth either they're mine or not. Quite studentish-habbit, isn't it?

I bite my nails since I can remember. I stopped doing it for about a year but now I'm back. I've had MUCH weirder habits though ..being an OCDer (an no.. I don't mean the Coldplay kind )

Have you ever wondered why people bite their nails? Nail biting is a symptom of an emotional disorder. It is an oral fixation due to a person being nervous, stressed out, or bored.

Some pathogens live inside of the nail and when you bite your nails, they can be spread between the fingers mouth and cause health issues. Bacteria from the nails transferred to the mouth may be harmful to the body and cause destruction of bone structure in the mouth.

People who bite their nails a lot may also bite their surrounding skin and cuticle as well. By biting the surrounding skin and cuticle, you are breaking the skin, making you vulnerable to infections.

Compulsive nail biters may have trouble using their hands. They may have difficulty writing, typing, drawing, playing stringed instruments, and driving because of the damage done to the nails and the surrounding skin, or anxiety about the appearance of their hands.

Nail biting is an addiction that can be harmful to a person's health. Biting your nails isn't a solution for stress, it increases it. If you are too stressed, see a counselor or therapist. Find other things to do and leave your nails alone!

Bah! Bullshit.. I've been a cellist for 10 years and i've done well so far with my bitten nails!

I do admit that sometimes the skin around my nails is sore but that doesn't stop me from doing anything i want..

well indeed.. i mean i would stop right away if i had problems with WRITING (???!) because of biting my nails

i'm guessing the not being able to write comes from when you bite your nails as badly as my cousin. he never used to have more than 1cm worth of nail on his fingers he bit them so much

well i honestly don't think i have that much, if at all, more nails than that..

That's why i said "extreme nail biters" :bigcry:

But still, i've always been able to play instruments, type, write, scartch..do anything i want.

welcome back my old thread.

I no longer bite my nails. Hurray hurray hurray!

I just one day put some nail polish on and tried not to bite them. And then i didn't bite them.

Now my nails are actually quite long! (short enough to be able to play my cello)

And they're getting stronger too.

This is a success story. You others have hope too.

im an extreme nail biter, im working on it with nail polish too ^__^

it was suprisingly easy to stop biting them. I thought it would be harder.

I guess i bite them when i'm in a lot of stress and now i have NO stress whatsoever 'cause i already finished school and have summer ahead of me.. all goood

I don't bite my nails, but I do bite the cuticles around them. Which is an annoying habit because my fingers will hurt alot when I'm dealing with acidic liquid or food. The upside is it makes my hands look more manly! :D

Ah, i still do that though. But just a bit. They bleed every now and then but ah well, who cares. A bit of blood makes any girl pretty

I am one.

I have always been one.

I have NEVER had long finger nails :disappointed:

I know it looks horrible but i'm just so used to them so i don't think they're so bad.. But when i see someone elses nails..and they're like mine i go "oh my GOD! Do they look that bad " and apparently they do.

I know it's a bad habbit but i just can't help it.. my mum always says it started because she didn't let me suck to thumb long enough when i was a baby. Don't know if there's any truth in that but anyway.

At the moment i'm wearing some nail polish and i haven't bitten them since i put it on yay! It also makes my nails feel stronger (they're weak as hell normally)

Well, i play some instruments so it's not even possible to have long finger nails but it wouldn't hurt to have a bit more of them either..

Mwah.

Anyone share my problem?

And i'm talking about those extreme nail biters whose nails look CRAP not just "meh, i bite them when i'm nervous" people.

Weeoo, DISCUSS!

I don't. I touch my ears or chew on my rubber bracelets (I know, gross)

but I do that so often that now everyone knows when I'm nervous/lying...

Me too ... only that I don't work with any kinds of liquid, so it's not that bad. It still hurts from time to time.

Oh im a nails biter too, or i was :D i dont bite them is 2 months now :D im getting used to them like this, not easy, sometimes i get nervous or is just the habit i had before, so i had to bite :embarassed: but im working on it... i give up from all that anti-nailbitter? something:uhoh: does not work anymore for me, not even pepper, the secret to not bite nails is, cross your arms and do something else when you feel like you´re going to bite nails :)
