Possible places for Coldplay to go now

Too many people get caught up on evolution or experimental meaning electronica or more complex structures. Mainly because people use Radiohead to draw conclusions from Coldplay.

 

VLV was not Kid A and its easy to see why, Coldplay's sadness has always been more wide screen, more personal and less creepy than Thom Yorke's ironic blend of horror that was thrown all over kid A in contrast VLV was an experimental album of sunny days grounded in world music and culture.

 

So theres been comparisons to Revolver (simple worldly music) and the Unforgettable Fire. With that said where do Coldplay go from here.

 

Theres a few avenues.

 

LIT2, Glass of water show a new side to Coldplay, a rocking side. For their entire career Coldplay have never really rocked out noticably. Theres been exceptions, One I Love for example showed a side of Coldplay we could see more often. Radiohead never delivered a full on rock assault, but they have far more uptempo songs than Coldplay. If X&Y was taking inspiration from Muse it was basically the same sound as before with synths. VLV overall shows Coldplay can rock out, but prefer to use acoustics and piano rather than a dominate bass and electric, it would be intresting.

 

More rhythm based... as in Rainy Day, Lost style sound scapes kinda going in the Kid A direction, but I was actually thinking more of the Gorrilaz. Chris loves his hip hop but JayZ brought nothing to Lost, still a more gorrilaz style front would be intresting. Since chris has a similar range and singing style to Damon Albarn.

 

Your thoughts, on future directions for Coldplay?

Where they want to. They know that they can't go back to where they were pre-Viva, so they can develop their current sound further, or go off in an experimental, yet accessible direction - yes, it can be done, as shown by Rainy Day, 42 and Yes.

 

Personally, I'd love it if the next album was a bit on the rockier side, along the lines of the awesome epicness of Glass Of Water. More of that please.

I've thought a lot about the same thing. Now that they've stepped out of the shadow of X&Y they could go a million crazy directions. I don't think they're going to step back into any of their previous styles, nor do I expect anything to imitate this tour's colorful VLV theme. I don't expect anything blatantly Kid A (even though that's sort of what i expected for this album), but I do expect them to push their boundaries.

 

I'm hoping for

A. A new, more serious theme. I'm not asking for the war album, per se. But lyrically this album was vacuous, and a multitude of interesting, but generally disconnected ideas. I guess I hope for something more tangible than "long live life" and colorfulness.

B. More musical bravery. VLV had some unique themes, but they generally lasted for about one song. Brave experiments would resolve into cliche pop hits. I hope the experimentation stays the same or becomes more extreme and immersive. Whether that means avante-garde minimalism, or heavier rock with fresh FX.

C. Longer, more patient songs. VLV was very ADD, even their three-part "epics" stayed less than 4 minutes. I would like to savor the songs a little longer, with at least one 6 minute song like AROBTTH.

I kn.ow this sounds like something a 12-year-old would write, and is not particularly interesting, but I can't help myself.

 

I think one of the most exciting things about Coldplay is that we won't be able to guess.

And album full of 'LIT2's, 'Glass Of Water's and 'Prospekt's March's would be great. I really think they should do way more atmospheric acoustic songs, but mixed in with heavier, more epic stuff like Glass Of Water... that would make for a really great album, IMO. BUt i think they need to lengthen their songs out a bit, a la Spies (the live version, in particular) and AROBTTH. I like the style of VLVoD, but I can't help but think that some of the songs could have been better if they were one or 2 minutes longer (42, Violet Hill, DAAHF).

 

I still think Coldplay have yet to make their masterpiece, although they've come really close a few times. I hope it'll be LP5, but I have a feeling it won't be, seeing as they want to record it quickly and release it by the end of '09. The fact that they're doing it quickly makes me think that the style of the next album won't be much different from VLV, and we know that they've got a few *nearly* finished songs from this era anyway that they would want to use. Who knows, though.

 

But whatever, they rarely disappoint, so I'm sure whatever we do, it'll be impressive :D

umm i would like another parachutes. and thats my 3rd favorite album by them! but now my feet and prospekts march made me want more acoutstic stuff

 

I want more acoustic stuff too. Not like a step backwards or anything..I mean like the acoustic on Prospekt's March.

Anyhow I say no more acoustic stuff, Coldplay have done this to death. Go the opposite and get heavy, or get poppy. Just no more floral pastural albums like VLV. (and i love VLV but please do a U2 and make yourself a rock beamoth as a follow up)

 

I personally except a pop record, mainly because Kylie is in it.
