We're Something Together

Part 1

Chris' POV

Jonny and I were sitting on his sofa. We'd spent the whole day together. It was great. In the morning we went for a run around the town. Jonny's not much of a runner, but he does well enough. For lunch we went to a nice vegetarian restaurant. They have the most amazing tofu there. I swear I must have eaten my entire weight in food. We went to a rehearsal with the rest of the band, which went pretty well. Then later on we went to go see a movie that had just come out. It was all right, but not as good as I'd expected it to be. Jonny loved it, though. Sometimes he's a silly man.

We weren't even doing anything except sitting. Not even talking. It was kinda awkward, and almost like we'd run out of things to say. That had never happened before. But there was also this sort of bond between us, like we didn't need to physically speak to each other in order to have a conversation. I liked where the conversation was going, too. I tapped my fingers on my leg, and Jonny scratched the side of his neck. I think it was some sort of conversation, anyway.

"I'm gonna make cookies," Jonny said, then stood up and walked to his kitchen. If that was a result of the unspoken conversation, then I definitely loved it. Cookies are fabulous.

"OK." I sat back and put my feet up on his coffee table. Reflecting on the day we'd had, I started to wonder- why was Jonny making cookies? It seemed kinda random, but I think I already knew the answer.

"They should be done in fifteen minutes." Jonny sat back down next to me. "They're chocolate chip."

"I love chocolate chip cookies!"

"I know." He was trying to seduce me, I could tell. I wasn't about to stop him, either.

"Oh, you know me so well, Jonny." Was I trying to flirt with him or something? I was weirding myself out a bit, yet I didn't want to stop.

"Well, we spent the whole day together on top of the fact that we've been best friends for ten years. I think I know everything about you now. Everything." Was he flirting back? I was starting to get a little excited, which weirded me out even more. I kept going, though.

"Ah, I think there are still a few things you don't know." Oh, God. What the hell did I mean by that? I was definitely flirting with him now, and there was no going back.

"Oh, yeah?" I needed to think of something clever and funny to say, so that when I started grinning like an idiot it wouldn't seem so suspicious.

"Yeah, like I bet you didn't know that I'm actually from a small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Beteljeuse." That was the best I could come up with? At least it was some sort of cover.

"Oh, right. Wait... are you sure you're not a time-traveler?"

"Do I look like I have a DeLorean?"

"No, but you don't look like Mos Def, either."

"I think I do. We could have been separated at birth, actually." This conversation was seriously going almost as well as the unspoken one. Whatever amount of weirdness I felt, there was an equal, and sometimes greater, amount of happiness and excitement. Even if all this chatting didn't go anywhere, I was still enjoying it.

After ten minutes of our 'flirting', there was a loud knock on the door. It made me sad, because I knew that it was probably all over now. No matter who was at the door, once Jonny sat back down it wouldn't be the same.

"Guy." Guy was at the door. He looked like shit. Then I remembered what Jonny had told me, and what Sarah had tried to tell me. They were over, I could see it in his face. Jonny let him in, and he sat next to me on the sofa, where Jonny had been sitting. I felt sorry for Guy, but I was also a bit upset with him. He ruined all the fun I was having, and he brought this depressing air into the room. It wasn't his fault, though, so I let him get away with it.

After saying a few stupid things in an attempt to make him feel better, I was feeling worse than when he first walked in. Sometimes I need to know when to shut my big mouth. Luckily, Jonny had reentered the living room with the tray of cookies. I dug right in, but Guy said he wanted to go to bed. Jonny was letting him stay the night, and he told him that he could sleep in his bed. Lucky bastard.

Guy said goodnight and left. Jonny and I were alone again. Nothing would happen, though, because Guy was only in the other room, but being alone with Jonny was enough for me. We watched some telly and ate the cookies. Well, I think I ate all the cookies, but Jonny probably meant for that to happen. It was getting later and later, and I was getting more and more tired by the minute, but I didn't want to leave. My eyes were closing by themselves, and I was having a hard time keeping them open for even a few seconds.

I finally let my eyes close completely, and let my head fall so that I was resting on Jonny's shoulder. If I fell asleep like this, there was no way he'd make me leave.

It's the final part, I just thought it was fitting, I had nowhere else to go. I mean, I didn't have any creativity left in me to continue, so.... here it is :)

A Song For You

Chapter 4

The sky above him was clear, the sun glowing in the light blue sky, a warm breeze caressing his face as he walked.

He was headed to the beach. The shorts he had on and the towel that he carelessly put on his shoulder indicated that same destination. The album was officially finished, the winter had been substituted by spring and he was about to take one more big step in his life. It was time. And he couldn’t wait for it to happen. Just thinking about it made him grin like a little boy.

Approaching the stretch of beach where he always used to go, he took off his flip-flops and walked barefoot through the sand, looking at the sea.

It was a shade of blue and green together, making the scenery even more perfect. It was early in the morning so the beach was completely deserted except for one person. The person he was meeting here.

The person that could lead him anywhere. The person that he would follow anywhere.

Silently, he made his way to her spot. She was sitting on a towel, contemplating the calm sea, unaware of his presence. He placed his hands in front of her eyes and softly whispered in her ear.

“Guess who?”

“Mmmhh. A brown-haired, tall, handsome man with a smile that could melt any girl’s heart... Am I right?” Claire said, half-jokingly. She knew the effect her boyfriend had on women. Once upon a time, she had been one of them. Not that she would admit that to him, though.

“Well, I don’t think you’ve got the right man, then.”

She leaned into his embrace, moving her head so that he could kiss her. His beard tickled her in a way that she found irresistible. His gentle hands held her like she was some precious, fragile porcelain doll, similar to those she owned herself.

“You know, I have been thinking and... well, with everything that’s coming up, you should really get some time off work.” He said, disrupting her from her daydreaming.

“We have talked about this. I don’t want to and I am not going to. There’s no reason for it.” She said, determinedly.

“No reason?! Are you kidding me? What about the fact that...”

“I don’t care. I will not change my mind. I’m putting my foot down.”

“My God, why are you so stubborn? Just a few months, it’s no big deal, Claire.”

“I have worked for a long time in that hospital and I’ve had bad times in my life when I didn’t have time for myself. But that’s not the case, right now.”

“See, that’s where you’re wrong. Right now, everything has to be about you. It’s time for you to focus on yourself and on us. If it’s about the money, you don’t...”

“It’s not about that. It’s about the fact that I love my job. And I’m already going to have to take time off work, anyway. So, please, let’s make a deal.”

“I’m listening.” He said, fully aware that she wouldn’t back down and he had to try and make the best arrangement with her. Deep down, he knew he loved her because of this. This selflessness, this strength of character.

“I’ll cut down some hours and the rest of it will be spent in resting and planning for the big day, okay? Do we have a settlement, Mr Berryman?” She asked, sticking out her hand to him.

“Alright, you win.”

“Thank you.” She said, smiling at him and quickly pecking his lips. “Just so you know, from now on I, always win.”

Three months later, the long-awaited day finally came and went, leaving a trace of happiness and love on its way.

It was late August and everything about the day was perfect, in Guy’s opinion. He remembered the look on Claire’s face, the smiles directed at him from his band mates, the support of his beloved family.

The memories brought a smile to his lips.

She was dressed in a white dress that ended just below her knees, her hair was flowing in the same way it was the first time he saw her all those months ago, her face flushed and content.

The sight of her that morning literally took his breath away. This was the woman he was meant to be with, he knew. There was a time when he would have called himself cheesy at that moment, with those romantic thoughts. But he just didn’t care about that anymore. He just cared about the fact that he was happy.

And he was about to get happier.

On that lovely, summery day, Robyn May Berryman was born. Yes, his second daughter was born.

Just like Nico, she was full of life, curious about everything and smiley. She inherited her mother’s breathtaking beauty, turning her into a small version of Claire. Everything but the eyes.

He could see his eyes mirrored on her own. Just like when his first child was born. They shared the same intensity in those enchanting, serene brown eyes.

And looking at them was the best feeling in the world for him. He could feel reassurance and comfort invading his whole body, his confidence in life reaching its pinnacle.

As he sat on his rocking chair in the back of his home, looking at the garden full of lilies and blossoms, his life seemed far too good to be true. Like he was living a dream. But he wasn’t. And he had evidences of that. The two little girls playing in the grass right next to him. His eldest daughter came up to him, running and coming straight into his open arms. He pulled her into his lap. She was celebrating her fourth birthday that day.

“Daddy? What are you gonna give me?” She asked, impatient to get her gift from her father.

The question made him smile. He looked at her, telling her the very same thing he had told his other daughter only a few weeks ago.

“A song, honey. I wrote a song for you.”
