Martin also thinks the band's recent London gigs could have been better

Coldplay's Chris Martin has admitted that the band's 2000 single 'Shiver' was essentially a Jeff Buckley rip-off.

The star was speaking on the Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1 today (December 18) when he made the admission.

"It's a blatant Jeff Buckley attempt," he told Moyles. "Not quite as good, that's what I think. We were 21 and he was very much a hero, and as with those things it tends to filter through."

The frontman also revealed that he thinks the band's recent London gigs should have been better. The band played the UK capital's O2 Arena earlier this week (December 14, 15, 16).

When Moyles asked the singer how he thought the London gigs went, Martin replied, "I would give them a three out of ten".

However, the frontman did admit afterwards that he was notoriously difficult to please, saying that the score was "good for me".

As soon as he said that, I knew stories like this would pop up...sigh

He blatantly didn't say 'rip off' either. :dozey:

Charley Rogulewski Asks: "Is Coldplay's Chris Martin An Idiot?"

Charley Rogulewski Asks: "Is Coldplay's Chris Martin An Idiot?"

I am no Harvard Law graduate, but I'm pretty sure if you are being sued for plagiarism, it'd be a really really good idea to not go on a radio show and say you've ripped off other artists. Coldplay's Chris Martin did just that on a BBC Radio 1 show today. Martin and his band Coldplay are being sued by guitarist Joe Satriani, who believes Coldplay's successful "Viva La Vida" title-track is a direct rip-off of his "If I Could Fly" (see below video).

Martin gets on the Chris Moyles radio show today and admits the band's 2000 single 'Shiver" was a failed attempt to sound like Jeff Buckley.

"It's a blatant Jeff Buckley attempt," Martin said on the radio show. "Not quite as good, that's what I think. We were 21 and he was very much a hero, and as with those things it tends to filter through."

Like I said, I'm no lawyer, but if I were I would use this little sound bit against Martin in a court of law. For example, me as the lawyer for Satriani: "Your honor, this isn't the first time the defendant has plagiarized from other artists. In a December 18th, 2008 interview with BBC Radio 1 Martin even admitted to ripping off Jeff Buckley. This type of plagiarism cannot be tolerated and must stop before ..." jada jada enter more laywer speak here. Someone should make Satriani a little YouTube clip of "Shiver" and the Jeff Buckley rip-off side by side. Gotta find the Buckley tune first. Luckily for Coldplay Buckley won't be suing from six feet under.

*is confused* I just clicked on that iplayer link posted up there ^, and Coldplay's "have yourself a merry little christmas" is playing, but that's not the interview, right? It's just a coincidence?

EDIT: found it! And why is that song for the UK only? Must they rub it in my face that I'm stuck over here?! :(

He has a point.

I think maybe Mister Martin should be banned from interviews until after it's all sorted :P

On the contrary, I don't think he has a point...Chris just said they tried to sound like Jeff's work but not they took a part of one of his song...Many musicians admit that...! Just simple admiration...

As for Shiver, it's not a revelation, just listen to 'Grace' and Jeff's riff from 0'11sec ->0'27, it's kinda the same as Jonny's riff on shiver in 'slower':

so nothing to be surprised here...

I just listened to the interview on the BBC 1 website. It was great.

What was said about Girls Aloud and then Chris Martin said that was going over the line. I also couldnt believe he asked him what do you call Beyonce and he said he didnt want to talk about it.Was that too personal for him??

Great interview XD!! I loved the verbal ping-pong between CHris and Moyles XDD I also love how Chris imitate Will with a grumpy voice on the 'girls aloud' idea: 'hummm...ok, good idea.' (well, Will you maybe should have put your veto on that one! XD)

Back for good/scientist : awesome!!

And in the studio in january: squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
