Donnie Darko

I do think Frank is that other morally corrupt part of Donnie's schism, however that does put a dent in the tangent universe idea, so was the whole Frank the rabbit thing a dream/fantasy and there was no sign from God, was the tangent universe the real universe and all that we saw was not an alternate reality but the real one? This tangent universe may be a sci-fi musing, but view the film from a strictly humanist perspective and it's grounded in the psychological make up of a schitzophrenic, and so Donnie entered his tangent universe to justify his actions, a form of nihilist self gratification? My point being, there's all sorts of ways you can view it, depending on your philosophical weapon of choice. Me, i like the existential nature of it, while also agreeing with your C&P parallels. I too see Donnie as compassionate and caring, as pointed by several scenes where Donnie does get quite emotional when discussing his crisis with various other characters in the film. i wouldn't harness any malicious feelings either, I think he's a very empathetic character, and from a simplistic point of view, he's no less mixed up and confused and trying to make sense of this crazy world than any of us are. In one of the deleted scenes his therapist says he can come of his medication..well personally I think he may not have needed med..I mean who's really crazy in the world? I look around and think the "insane," they're not so crazy...the rest of us...?...hmmm

The mad world song is running through my head now!

If Donnie mistook coincidence to be fate...and then found out that that was not his purpose...then I spose that the T.U. wouldn't have existed

that version of Mad World by Gary Jules is so beautiful

YAY FOR THIS THREAD!!! i was gonna make on myself!!

YAY for your av Dr.P!!

when i first saw this movie i started laughing at the part where Donnie takes the kitchen knife and trys to stab Frak when he enters the bathroom

I have some questions now..:

1) My sister and i wonder , what do you think the meaning of that fat girl in this movie?? (i think her name i katrina er...)

2. Did anyone notice the part where their all in class and their watching the movie and then the guy hugs the kid, and he grabs the little boys butt?

her name was Cherita!! i loved her , her and her earmuffs! CHUT UP! hehe

number 2...are you talking about Jim Cunningham?

Cherita was based on a character from Fargo as a sort of hommage

but she also is symbolic...she brings out human cruelty ...sheer meany pantsness (new word). This cruelty is juxtaposed with all the stuff that Donnie does, to show us that Donnie isn't such a bad guy (as we may believe because of his actions) because he did not do things out of malice or cruelty.

Donnie to Cherita in the hall. "One day, everythings going to be great for you!"

Cherita "CHUT UP!"

aww she liked donnie!!!

yeah who wouldn't??!!!

there was one major stupid part in the film though that i didn't get- the part when donnie is talking to noah whiley about time travel and then noah says i'm afraid i cannot continue this conversation because i may lose my job!!!

how??

Twas a religiously affiliated private school, he would have had to discuss theology and the possibility that God did not exist- a major no no (esp. in the states)!
