mc_squared
January 1... and the Easter eggs are on sale By Claire Ellicott Last updated at 11:56 PM on 31st December 2008 Comments (-) Add to My Stories Early: Easter eggs are already on sale Your head hurts from last night's celebrations, and you never want to see a Christmas turkey or a mince pie again. But take heart - you can cheer yourself up with an Easter egg. Yes, it may be only New Year's Day but already the chocolatey treats are appearing on supermarket shelves. Just the 14 weeks early. Customers were astonished to see staff putting out 'Easter Treats' displays of chocolates and daffodils at a Tesco store only four days after Christmas. The Cadbury's Creme Eggs, Easter chicks and chocolate bunnies went on display next to reduced-price Christmas crackers, decorations and wrapping paper at the supermarket in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. One customer, Stephen Roland, 31, said: 'I couldn't believe it. Selling Easter eggs three or four days after Christmas is ludicrous - particularly when Easter is in April.' Shopper Ellen Turner, 53, said: 'They don't let one season finish before they press another on you.' A Tesco spokesman said that stores all over Britain would be putting up their Easter displays in the coming weeks. Many shoppers have been left bewildered in recent years as the holiday periods seem to get earlier and earlier and blend into each other. In 2007, one local council put up the country's first Christmas lights in October, before the first Halloween celebrations had taken place. It is not the first time that Easter has caused embarrassment for a major supermarket. Last year Tesco and other supermarkets were accused of using Easter eggs to launch a price war. Tesco sold eggs at a buy-one-get-one-free price of £1.49 - just 74p per egg - leading to concerns that the supermarket was selling them at a loss to pull in shoppers. Revellers celebrating Hogmanay in Scotland were able to go 'first footing' - with chocolate coal. The centuries-old tradition of first footing involves the first person to cross the threshold of a home after midnight on New Year's Eve taking a gift of coal to ensure warmth for the coming year. But with the use of coal in decline, the practice is in danger of disappearing. So Tesco stores in Scotland sold 99p lumps of chocolate coal to try to encourage youngsters to carry on the tradition. Black Rose
Where that might be taken seriously in China and other countries, only a small minority of people in this country celebrate it in the same way they celebrate Easter.

FixYou319
Theres still a sizable percentage of people here in the UK, who live totally by tradition and consider Christmas Day as being a sacred yet joyous day to celebrate cos they firmly beleive that it was the day that Jesus Christ was born!! I for my part, dont even celebrate it so it doesnt matter to me one way or the other and Iwould have gladly worked on Christmas Day if I worked for that department store if they paid me double time!!!!:D:D:D

FixYou319
I am affliated with Jehovahs Witnesses!!! I have studied extensively the Bible and when you align Bible events and Prophecies with Bible Chronology you will come to the conclusion that Jesus Christ was not born at this time of year on what is the equivilent of Dec 25th in our modern day calender!!!! Also Jesus himself said that his death was of far more significance for mankind than his birth!!!!!

Also Jesus himself said that his death was of far more significance for mankind than his birth!!!!! I see. Well it's true that nobody actually knows when he was born, and even the actual year is in doubt. The only reason Christmas is at this time is because the Romans/Catholic Church "took over" a Pagan festival which was already in place at that time. In other words, it was more to do with convenience than anything else. Most people who celebrate it only use it as an excuse to stuff their faces, drink excessively and spend excessively anyway. That's why I have become rather disinterested and disillusioned over the years.;)
FixYou319
I couldnt agree with you more!!! I dont blame you becoming very disillusioned!!! And I agree with you that Christmas is indeed a pagan festival and nothing 2 do with TRUE Christianity whatsoever!!!!

FixYou319
Well, of course we commemorate Jesus' sacrificial death during that given time every year, but we dont actually celebrate Easter as such per se because, to be honest everything that is associated with Easter is revolved around sex worship and, lets be honest, what has rabbits and Easter Bunnies and eggs got to do with Jesus Christ anyway??? Once again it is all heaped with pagan worship and has nothing to do with TRUE Christianity at all!!! As with Christmas, Easter is a pagan festival that all the economic elements of this world use as an excuse for outright commercialism!!!

Black Rose
Easter is one of the biggest consumer rip-offs of the year. OMG Jesus died on a variable date every year, let's eat chocolate. The only good thing about Easter is that it gives me a long weekend.
