Any advances on the point of the overwrite feature?

Maybe it's there in case your delete button breaks? :blank:

I could never find any good reason to use it in Word.

But I do quite often use it in Excel, I find it can be helpful there.

The insert function is about as useless as the Alt-F4 function.
