OOOOHHHH a guy interview

Featured Replies

A cute guy interview, especially at the bit about cooking at the end :D

From: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/page.news.php3?clid=12&theme=A&usrsess=1&id=18539

On his first visit to Thailand, Guy Berryman got his thrills riding an elephant and learning to cook a yellow curry. On his second visit, Berryman – one quarter of the popular British band Coldplay – thrilled an audience of more than 10,000 at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani with his mellow, purring bass guitar, rich chocolate filling in the candy-coated melody of “Yellow”.

The cool-hearted musician remains in awe of this country, the final stop on Coldplay’s world tour.

“I really like it,” he says, brushing a tendril of wild hair from his eyes. “It’s a different sort of country in that it has kind of fallen in from all these different places. Like the food: it is a little bit like Chinese food, but the spices are from India – an amazing blend.”

“It’s the first time we’ve played in Thailand. One of the greatest things about being in a band is getting to travel.”

Indeed, the band has been touring non-stop, mostly in the United States, since releasing their album “A Rush of Blood to the Head” in August last year.

“This was one of our challenges,” Berryman said. “Everyone was telling us it was impossible for bands [from Europe] to do well in America, and it made us angry.”

Berryman flew back to Britain on Wednesday for a little bit of rest (“Damn right, I’m tired out!”) and relaxation.

So what does he do for relaxation? “I like to collect vinyl. I do like Graham Parsons, and I really like the Beatles.”

After a break, Coldplay will begin work on its third album.

Berryman admits there is pressure. “But it’s not worrying, exactly. It’s exciting,” he says. “I go to bed happy knowing that we’ll be in studio soon. When I’ve been in the studio too long, I’ll be eager to perform.”

“We always want to improve in terms of musicianship and singing.”

Berryman says he would not know what the album would be like until the band got into the studio, but that Coldplay is already working on some new tunes. Of course, recording is an entirely different animal from performing.

“When you perform, there’s a hell of a lot more people in the room,” he jokes. “Seriously, though. In the recording studio, it’s very creative. On stage, it’s spontaneous, instantaneous. Everything happens in a second.”

But both formats are deeply personal. Since Chris Martin, Coldplay’s lead singer, writes the lyrics from his own perspective, the songs reflect scenes from his personal life – his thoughts, worries, desires. It was even reported that the band would no longer play “Green Eyes” because it was written for Martin’s ex-girlfriend.

“Chris is singing about these things that are so deeply personal to him,” Berryman says. “To get up on stage and sing about these things in front of so many people, you really have to believe in what you’re singing.”

He says this honesty is more important to the group than fitting into a musical category.

“We’re not really a rock band. “We’re a song band. We’d pick a song over the way it sounds. We’re four people who are passionate about music. I don’t know where that comes from.

“There is something between humans and music that is,” he searches for a word, “strong”.

“This is what we’re best at. What you’re best at is the thing you’re most passionate about.”

Of course, people can have multiple passions.

“I love to cook,” he grins, those usually dark and brooding eyes wide with enthusiasm. “I find it very therapeutic.” Between yellow curries and “Yellow songs”, Berryman is sharing quite a lot of love with Thailand.

The lanky bass player leans forward, presses his hands together and bites his lower lip like a kid sitting on a terrific secret and says modestly, “I’m a pretty good cook.”
