Not a game of endurance? Are you kidding me? The players train very hard so they can play full out for the whole game. If you slow down on even one play the opposition is going to take advantage of you and you'll get burned almost every time. Getting hit almost everytime you throw the ball, getting hit almost everytime you catch the ball, getting hit everytime you run with the ball......that takes endurance to withstand that for a whole season.

Which is why they're all pumped up on steroids.:smug:

I agree, a lot of people go way overboard. But when it comes to the super-bowl, getting worked up is part of the fun. It's about screaming at the top of your lungs when the miraculous happens, and being that invested in each play. If you lose, you'll get over it eventually. But if you win (especially if it's close), it's the most joyous time of the year!

Yeah, and I mean over the course of the season (unless you are a Lions fan), you'll have multiple opportunities to be happy. Over the long run it all balances out. Lots of highs, lots of lows. But thats the fun of it.

Are you saying that only american football players are doping?

Are you saying that only american football players are doping?

Nope. But judging by how they all look, I bet there are very few of them that aren't.

Same with the WWE (although that isn't even a sport).;)

Thats a pretty shallow assumption. Through hard work and dedication it is possible to have a tanked body without the use of illegal substances. These guys train day in and day out to stay in the shape they are in.

Still don't believe it. The human body can't stand such incessant physical intensity

naturally.

You've obviously never known a hard working athlete.

There's a big difference between a hard-working athlete and hard-working "dope machine".

its not even worth trying to have a logical discussion with you.

MC_Squared, don't be so presumptuous! It requires thousands of dollars worth of NutriSystem and twinkies to get a body like that! ;)

Football has a cherished place in American society, and I think that's unfortunate. It teaches children to get heavily emotionally invested in teams that are representational of certain geographic areas. That's practically priming the mind to accept appeals to authority and hate people who aren't born in the same area you were.

So you mean it breeds a kind of internal "xenophobia"??:stunned:

Yeah internal and external. And if you don't enjoy watching burly men running around in tights then you must be queer!

Also, have you ever listened to the commentary during a football game? It's hilariously vapid. I swear the control room cranks up the ambient noise of the crowd to drown out John Madden's voice sometimes.

That's going a bit far. It's not so much an attitude of hating everywhere else so much as taking some pride in your own state, city, town, university, players etc. and to hold Nick up as an example, choosing a team is not always dependant on proximity but often the nature of the team and it's players. Having your own team, and interacting with other fan's, even of rival teams, is all good fun, and rarely ever as serious as some believe.

lol. Admittedly it may be the most homoerotic sport since greco-roman wrestling, but reducing any sport to it's actually practice (hitting balls with sticks etc.) usually misses the point.

And how old is John Madden? He looked kind of tired and worn-out, even at the beginning of the game. It's like he's just going through the motions these days.

Good response Justin.

And I don't think it makes you hate people from other towns/states/etc.

I hate the Patriots, yet a bunch of my friends are Patriots fans. And I don't hate them or anything. Its just a fun rivalry. If you hate people that are fans of other teams then that may be a problem.

Whats that supposed to mean? I'm not jumping to conclusions and making assumptions based on personal opinions.

7. way less people juice up than you think, mark.

I very much doubt it.;)

Boy this thread really took off.

I'm just going to start treating football like I do hockey and baseball: watch the occasional regular season game, then follow them thru the postseason but don't get too wrapped up. I don't know how football ever became so important to me that it caused me to have a reaction like this.

And American football in general is utterly boring. It's the pro version of "red light green light" because they're always stopping you from playing for longer than 30 seconds. Of course, it's not really a game of endurance.

If you had ever played, you would know it is one of the most physically straining games ever that does require tons of endurance. You have to run your heart out on every play (not like basketball or soccer where you just sort of jog most of the time). You get little time between plays because you have to run back to your huddle from wherever you ended up, quickly get a play, then back up to the line. And no matter what position you play you are going to get hit so hard time and time again. With its combined running and hitting, football is as tough as it gets in sports, right up there with hockey and rugby.

Okay, provide some facts and maybe I'll take your assumption seriously.

Agreed. Most of the comments being made here calling the NFL lame and not a sport, etc. have obviously never played it.

The only thing NFL is soft for is lack of games, they play about 10 a season whereas Hockey is practically every other day

Yeah, I wish there were more games. But I think if there were more games we would see way more injuries.

In all major sports I would be a fan of a reduction in preseason games and an increase in regular season games.
