March 24, 200917 yr i'm going to have a hell of a time this weekend sorting through all the designs in this thread and determining which ones go in the poll :uhoh: :P. if i'm not mistaken, some were meant just as "test" designs and not actual submissions? or should i just put everything in? and i'm still wondering what to do about the backs...should we have two separate polls, one for backs, one for fronts? i feel like that's not the best decision, since we'd need two threads to do that, and i think the front and the back should work together in a way, rather than just smacking the most popular back on the most popular front. do the designers have any input? Some designs were tests indeed as the fonts have now changed, I could help you telling you which ones are supposed to go in the poll :) And yeah, some Backs are made to go along with some Fronts (if it's written Coldplaying.com on the front then Wembley's on the back, or the contrary...) and some tees don't go along with any Back... anyway dunno how we could set up the poll :/ (and yeah, we should probably email Debs concerning the copyright problem) !)
March 25, 200917 yr Great designs and good work, Anna & Khalplay :) And yep, I would possibly contact Debs to settle the copyright question ...
March 25, 200917 yr About asking Debs ... I already KNOW what she will reply. There was a copyright-concerned question to 'The Oracle' some time ago and she pointed out that something was under copyright and therefore protected so I assume our wish to use the drawing/silhouette is probably not too appreciated if we asked her directly and wanted to get an answer from her. Being asked directly she has to tell us off, I guess :( On the other hand, I've had a similar situation with another artist and he himself clearly said: If you keep asking straight for a permission, he had to deny it but there's this saying 'what the eye does not see, the heart does not grieve over' and usually the record companies/managements/artists themself wouldn't make the hassle to sue fans as long as they are not harming the interests of the artists. Don't know whether it comes across what I mean?!?
March 25, 200917 yr :laugh3:it means you just hope that the big shot EMI exects are not sitting within view of the coldplayers at the gigs !
March 25, 200917 yr Mhmm, you all seem to like the idea to get rid of the "coldplaying" on the front it seems... I don't know - I think it should be on there. But looking from a different perspective: If we are all standing in the front most people will see the shirt's backs anyway  Concerning the copyright: I don't know much enough as well about it but I think it is risky!! (But it is with any design we have so far.) Ok, if the "coldplaying" isn't on the front anymore it looks like there is something missing on it to me. What do you think about adding "Viva La Vida Tour"?
March 25, 200917 yr I love it Anna :) Hmmm concerning the copyrights I'm thinking... then it might become a problem to use the viva la vida writing too...etc so whatever happen we WILL have that copyright problem, using the 5 faces or not...
March 25, 200917 yr Ok, if the "coldplaying" isn't on the front anymore it looks like there is something missing on it to me. What do you think about adding "Viva La Vida Tour"? As much as I love that shirt, non-Coldplayers will be pestering probably "cool shirt! I didn't see it at the merch stand!" :P. And in terms of coopyright issues, all images/text/logo's related to Coldplay will most likely be copyrighted, apart from the word "Wembley" and "Viva La Vida" so :P. But on the other foot its a few t-shirts :\. Tough call.
March 25, 200917 yr And in terms of coopyright issues, all images/text/logo's related to Coldplay will most likely be copyrighted, apart from the word "Wembley" and "Viva La Vida" so :P. But on the other foot its a few t-shirts :\. Tough call. That's kind of my point. I mean, surely it shouldn't be treated lightly but when it comes to copyright, ANY kind of self customized fanart (banners/sigs/self made tshirts with logos/photos) are in some way copyright protected, either the fonts or the photos/designs so kind of nothing is allowed ... :( And as you already said it, it's a tough decision :(
March 25, 200917 yr Yeah, quite a hard choice to make... on the other hand we changed the text when we used VLV writing and Chris' one, and Chris' drawings don't appear on any album cover nor anything :/
March 25, 200917 yr As much as I love that shirt, non-Coldplayers will be pestering probably "cool shirt! I didn't see it at the merch stand!" :P. That's another reason to have "coldplaying" on the front as well actually...

Don't know whether it comes across what I mean?!? completely agreed. if we ask anyone even remotely official that's tied to the band, they're going to tell us not to do it. yet, if we do it and even if they see us wearing the shirts at the gig, i don't think anyone would do a thing about it. i actually think it would be extremely unlikely for them to enforce anything if the first time they see or become aware of the shirts is at the gig itself, when we're all wearing them. not that we should actively try to HIDE what we're doing or anything like that, but i say don't try to get shirts to the band or ask "permission" or anything to that effect. then i think there's a higher chance of everyone just carrying on with their merry ways without anyone causing a stink. however, i do think that the decision to use something that may have a copyright question attached to it is up to ian and jen, since i figure they'd get the brunt of the heat in the event that anything happened, since everything would be tied to this site.

So true, though that's a bit sad for those who, for instance, were planning to wear their Wembley shirt at another concert (was thinking about wearing mine in Paris :\)
March 27, 200917 yr OK, I'm not a designer but I saw this and immediately thought of the Wembley shirts. If someone who is capable of designing could sort of replicate this it could look cool on the back of a shirt. What to write inside the continents of the world map could be anything - CP song titles, coldplaying.com repeated, etc... I thought it was nice since it could kind of convey the internationality of our meet up. Just throwing another thought into the pot:)
March 27, 200917 yr :shocked3: that is a great idea Melanieau Same overhere, I do like the idea with the map on the back.
March 27, 200917 yr Hey, another good idea! I need to go to work now but will go on with this afterwards! So far I only made a very QUICK RAW .gif just to make sure I get what you mean... Do you mean a much nicer improved version of something like this? Talk to you later! I need to really hurry now to not be late!!
March 27, 200917 yr i like the map idea, but i'm still sore about there being an issue with the doodle faces  :P. now that i've seen that, i won't like anything else as much, i think. based on the original plan, i was going to make a poll on monday/tuesday/wednesday of the coming week. after consult with jen, that might be able to be slightly tweaked, but i think if we could have an option with the world on the back done by then and if we could have a final decision from the head honchos regarding copyright mishaps, it would be lovely :D
March 27, 200917 yr completely agreed. if we ask anyone even remotely official that's tied to the band, they're going to tell us not to do it. yet, if we do it and even if they see us wearing the shirts at the gig, i don't think anyone would do a thing about it. i actually think it would be extremely unlikely for them to enforce anything if the first time they see or become aware of the shirts is at the gig itself, when we're all wearing them. not that we should actively try to HIDE what we're doing or anything like that, but i say don't try to get shirts to the band or ask "permission" or anything to that effect. then i think there's a higher chance of everyone just carrying on with their merry ways without anyone causing a stink. however, i do think that the decision to use something that may have a copyright question attached to it is up to ian and jen, since i figure they'd get the brunt of the heat in the event that anything happened, since everything would be tied to this site. just a couple of thoughts... is it not possible to give the tees to the band after or at the end of the concert instead? since there's this copyright question. i also somehow think the band wouldn't wear the tees onstage during the concert anyway if they were given the tees in advance as they have their Viva La Vida outfits, which they seem to wear for just about every appearance/concert i've seen them in since Viva La Vida came out. i'm not trying to be a wet blanket here, just that i've seen them in those outfits so often now that i'm starting to wonder if they ever wash them... j/k :P with regards to the copyright concern, i think handwritings/doodles are not covered under copyright protection. but anyway, it did get me thinking about the band's use of the Delacroix paintings for the Viva La Vida & Prospekts March covers. i've seen the painting also reproduced on the tour tees they sell at concerts. so there must be some exceptions to what kind of art/writing/picture falls under copyright protection? but then i might be totally off on this last thought & i admittedly have never covered copyright laws academically or professionally. or perhaps EMI ponied up on royalty fees big time for the reproduction of the paintings...idk.
March 27, 200917 yr ^they almost certainly got all the proper permissions to use the delacroix painting from the artist's estate, the louvre, and all the appropriate channels. there would have been a big stink by now if they hadn't, since that is a well-known image they obviously didn't create themselves. i don't think they'd wear the shirts on stage, period the end. i don't mean to be a wet blanket either, but it's just not realistic in a number of ways. i'm not saying it's impossible, but i don't think it's likely enough for it to be worth the effort. i think it might be nice to throw one on stage afterwards if we're sure there's no copyright issues so they can get a close look at what everyone in the front was wearing, but throwing things onstage isn't really a good idea. i went to the US copyright's office website and found thisWhen is my work protected? Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device. anything we use that we didn't create with our own computers or hands is protected. we're bound to violate this in some way, and thousands already have. i'm not that worried. all this is potentially pertinent as well How much of someone else's work can I use without getting permission? Under the fair use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports. There are no legal rules permitting the use of a specific number of words, a certain number of musical notes, or percentage of a work. Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on all the circumstances. See FL 102, Fair Use, and Circular 21, Reproductions of Copyrighted Works by Educators and Librarians. How much do I have to change in order to claim copyright in someone else's work? Only the owner of copyright in a work has the right to prepare, or to authorize someone else to create, a new version of that work. Accordingly, you cannot claim copyright to another's work, no matter how much you change it, unless you have the owner's consent. See Circular 14, Copyright Registration for Derivative Works. Somebody infringed my copyright. What can I do? A party may seek to protect his or her copyrights against unauthorized use by filing a civil lawsuit in federal district court. If you believe that your copyright has been infringed, consult an attorney. In cases of willful infringement for profit, the U.S. Attorney may initiate a criminal investigation. Could I be sued for using somebody else's work? How about quotes or samples? If you use a copyrighted work without authorization, the owner may be entitled to bring an infringement action against you. There are circumstances under the fair use doctrine where a quote or a sample may be used without permission. However, in cases of doubt, the Copyright Office recommends that permission be obtained. i can't find a single thing about handwriting, if that makes anyone feel better. EDIT: after looking through the website's FAQ's, it seems that we're more concerned with violating trademarks, since those protect symbols and designs. i'll read up on that.
March 27, 200917 yr the information on trademarks isn't as clearly presented or easy to understand :dozey:. however, it seems as though if it doesn't have that tiny little TM next to it, it's not trademarked and therefore you can't be sued for infringing the trademark. to me, that means chris's doodles are fair game (though the other design for the back, the one with the shilhouettes, is an actual photo, which is copyrighted, so i don't think that's a good idea to use). i think we should also stay away from using the word "COLDPLAY" in the official fonts (the old one or the new one) since that IS copyrighted, as is the "VIVA LA VIDA" paintsplatter thing on the album cover. however, i don't think this is enough of an issue to worry about too too much. chris's doodles were copyrighted the second he drew them, but that doesn't mean they're officially registered anywhere, and i don't think anyone would call us up on any of this anyway, unless we got really carried away, and from what we have, i don't think we're in much danger.
March 27, 200917 yr Author Mhmm, you all seem to like the idea to get rid of the "coldplaying" on the front it seems... I don't know - I think it should be on there. me too! The best design I've seen thus far was one of the first ones with the blocked Coldplaying and Wembley '09 on the front. I don't get writing on the back at all!
March 28, 200917 yr I like that map w. coldplaying written in to it! What an impressive back that would be! :)
March 28, 200917 yr I like that map w. coldplaying written in to it! What an impressive back that would be! :) I tried a little working on it... It's barely readable what I did so far. The "coldplaying" would be too small... I am still trying around though...
March 28, 200917 yr however, i don't think this is enough of an issue to worry about too too much. chris's doodles were copyrighted the second he drew them, but that doesn't mean they're officially registered anywhere, and i don't think anyone would call us up on any of this anyway, unless we got really carried away, and from what we have, i don't think we're in much danger. personally, when i doodle or write stuff, it never even crosses my mind to consider slapping a trademark/copyright on my stuff...since it's just for fun & i'm not planning to sell them cos i don't think they are all that fantastic. but then, that's just me. + i'm not Chris Martin either. :laugh3: tho should anyone ever use my stuff, i'd be more worried about them plagiarising my stuff & claiming it as their work (as opposed to copyright infringement). which you guys & girls aren't anyway cos you're already acknowledging it's not your handwriting/doodle. no worries, mate (imo anyway). ;)
