Stickers target speeding drivers

Speed warning stickers for wheelie bins have been handed out in a Cumbrian town to encourage drivers to slow down.

The move follows complaints by people living in Castlegate Drive and Windmill Lane in Cockermouth that their roads were being used like "racetracks".

In response, the police and fire service have given residents 30mph stickers for each side of their bins.

On collection days, motorists using the roads will have to pass rows of the signs reminding them of the limit.

Pc Sue Wheelhouse, of Cockermouth Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "This initiative is in response to excessive speeding concerns by local residents, who are worried that it is only a matter of time before someone is killed or injured on their roads.

"It has not been tried in Cumbria before and we hope it will be eye-catching enough to encourage speeding drivers to slow down."

We have those around the test valley, they are only good when it's bin day.

And do they plan to have stickers on the reverse side of the bins saying "You've bin speeding"??

Nope, normally it's another sticker saying the speed limit :P

Why not just have a yellow caution flag to put out during bin pickup day, and then let the racers resume their normal speed for the rest of the race?:laugh3:

And what do you suggest this race is called? The Bindy 5000??

Do you think those stickers work?

They don't :P

Why is the UK so obsessed with speeding, it's not resopnsible for many accidents, speeding in a built up area is stupid though, it's common sense not to but speed cameras on motorways etc are pathetic.

True. The actual speed limit on motorways is too low as well. It should be raised to 80 mph, then the majority of people would be satisfied.;)

I see no problem with it being around 110 or 120 MPH on some motorways or unlimited like in some parts of Germany, the troule with that idea is there are too many terrible drivers in the UK, the driving standard in Europe seems on the whole better.

130 kph feels ideal to me.;)

That's about 85 ish isn't it?, I would be happy with 100 MPH on motorways in dry conditions.

I love how they actually think this is going to make people stop complaining about them doing nothing.

We are only allowed to go 100kph down here on the major freeways in cities...
