Nope, that's not true - I run several twitter accounts, some of which are private and some of which are public, and I just tested it. If your account is set to private, the only way someone can see your tweets is if they are following you back :\ (meaning you've given them permission to see your tweets by letting them follow you)

 

I think this is why a lot of famous people (or rather whoever runs their accounts) tends to follow back anyone following them - so they can keep up a two-way communication with their followers even if their followers' profiles are private. It surely isn't because they have time to keep up with thousands of people's tweets every day ;)

Ok, on the twitter thing - I just tested it..

 

if you have a private account and you tweet @apparatjik a message, it woun't show up in their main time line but they can still see it by clicking on the @apparatjik link on the right hand side..(next to direct messages)

 

All the @apparatjik tweets will show up there (for them at least), from public & private accounts whether they are following them or not. Try it on your own account...I just checked mine and found a load of tweets directed to me that I missed...shit :shame:

 

So, if they are regularly checking their @apparatjik list, they'll be seeing everyone's tweets :thumbsup:

 

But, like Catherine/Pris & everyone else said, if you're private your tweets won't show up on a public @apparatjik search for everyone else
