Coldplay VS...?...huh

Featured Replies

When I first heard Chris mentioning things like wanting to make good music for

the 15 yr old fan that gets beaten up for liking Coldplay,

I really didn't understand what he meant.

After being at the WarChild gig and having the Killers fans be

strangely weird and rude to those of us in line that didn't

identify ourselves as members of the Victims I really started

to wonder.

Does anyone else think this is odd? Am I wrong in thinking that in America we don't have a band vs band mentality i.e. "I like so and so and the band you like sucks"

As if they are competing football teams or something? Maybe things have changed since I was a 15 year old, but is it my

imagination or is this sort of an oddly European thing? When I was a teenager people didn't get slagged because of what band they liked, it was more about equally stupid things like your clothes, your hair, your awkwardness. And even that really didn't continue past highschool.

It could be that I'm just too old to know how things are with "the kids" these days.

Wow, after typing that it just dawned on me that we do have something similar in the whole, silly East Coast/West Coast rap feud stuff that I don't get either.

:laugh3:

Anyway I just find it oddly interesting and wondered if anyone else had pondered it as well.

Either way, I now think I know what Chris is talking about.

It is HIGHLY uncool in the UK to like Coldplay....more so than anywhere else I think. On the rare occasions I have mentioned it to people I have been ridiculed, therefore I just don't anymore.

I think if anyone stumbled onto this site and discovered I was me they'd be highly shocked :laugh4:

However when I was at school, we didn't really have people picking on others because of musical tastes, but then again I went to an all girl school, so the insults were mostly based on weight/hairstyle etc. I imagine it's much different at a mixed/boys school.

I always used to be embarrased to say that they were my favorite band... that sounds mean but it's true. I don't know why there is just always a negative connotation with Coldplay.

.

& also I think that we definitely have that ^^

People reject the unfamiliar, so if someone has a different opinion, people's first reaction is to say "ew that sucks" especially w/kids who can be crazy mean for no reason.

^^ Uncool in the UK, really?

I don't really notice it would be uncool to love Coldplay, but I don't know what is like amongst kids at school. Of course, it is way cooler to love Oasis or AC/DC... But I do notice people sometimes only 'dare' to admit they are CP fans after I say I love them.... Weird!

In my experience, yes.

They have a huge fanbase here, but outside of that there is more scorn for them than anywhere else, I think. The Sun is the only UK newspaper who seems to like them, the rest have nothing but bad things to say about them

(By the way Kelly, The Sun is that paper I bought in London with the boobies in it )

I do find it odd, but I think it's probably true. It's been a long time since I've been a "kid", but I'd venture to say that kids do get made fun of for what music they like or don't like. I've fortunately gotten to that stage in my life where I don't giv a f*ck what anyone thinks about what I like and don't like, so maybe that's why it's so difficult to understand???

I haven't run into anyone here in America that doesn't like or love Coldplay. Why then are they not popular in the UK? You would think that's where they would be well loved. Crazy world, why just can't we all get along?

I think there is definitely some sort of band vs band mentality in every country

'I like *insert some lesser-known indie/punk/metal band name here* and you like Coldplay? Ewwwwwwwww.'

I believe the bigger a band gets, the more flak its fans get.

this type od thinking is so typical. unfortunatelly. but when we grow up we forget about this kind of thinking ;p

Well a year ago or so I still felt embarrassed to tell that I'm a huge Coldplay fan, mainly because everyone thinks their music is depressing and therefore their fans must be depressed, sad, boring whatever ...

Nowadays I always say that I love Coldplay. Some react weird, others say they like them too. And if they do I'm trying my best to make them LOVE Coldplay.

I noticed something similiar yesterday.

I was one the phone with a friend who I hadn't spoken to for around a year (yep, that happens :laugh3: ). Anyway, I mentioned that I have been quite busy with concerts and stuff and that I had a new 'fave band' and mentioned that it was Coldplay.

Initially you would think that this was okay because of several different reasons:

1. it's not a teenie band

2. they haven't been casted on a TV show

3. they receive international recognition by getting Grammy awards

4. they are internatinally successful

5. they've released the top selling album of 2008 and 'VLV' was (and still is) a massive airplay hit in Germany

Therefore I thought I was safe to mention them.

If I mentioned a band which was maybe casted, I would have expected to get some strange looks (esp. at my age) but not with Coldplay.

But it did happen.

My friend mentioned explicitly that she can't stand them and really has no use for Chris Martin himself ...

I mean, you don't need to have the same musical taste, but even pointing out that you dislike some music/or a band is so needless ...

So I ask the same: Why do people do it then?

To make others feel worse for their musical taste?

I have stopped taking in opinions from others long time ago, as my fave bands/musicians were mostly 'fringe group music' so people haven't either heard of the artist or they just thought the music was shit ... ;)

it isn't embarrassing for me to say that i'm a coldplay fan but i wouldnt shout it around in class. i dont know why but it is like that.

i would say that it is cool to even have favourite music or bands.

how stupid is it to say that you dont know which music you like?

I think you're right because after thinking about this for a couple of weeks it didn't occur to me that we have the same thing here until I started to post this thread, then I thought of the whole rap feud thing. Same silliness, different costumes.

OMG The boobies!!! I'd read that there was a paper in England that had ...is it called 'page 3 girls' or someething. I just wasn't quite prepared for a full page nekkid girl with those big breastasies to be staring at me whilst looking for stuff about Coldplay in the paper! Too funny!

awwwww, I miss being in London with you guys a ton, I'm ready to come back tomorrow!!

Haha, I totally forgot about it, guess is just the norm with our tabloids, I didn't think to mention it  Sorry.

Aww me too :( I'd even wait in that queue again :nice:

Yeah, if you simply don't like the band/music you just say "well, i'm not really into them" or "they are not my style", and not point what is "bad" in them.

But if other people don't like your musical taste we really shouldn't take it seriously and we should believe in what we like... ;)

can't say I've noticed it particularly with Coldplay, but I did used to get ridiculed at school for my adoration of Take That. boy bands just aren't cool enough, or proper music - that would be stuff like manics & nirvana

Sorry in case I didn't come across clearly ...

If I really like a band or some certain music, I don't give a sh** what other people think about it. ;)

It was more a rhetorical quessie :)

I don't give a s**t what people think either, but when people go on and on at how pathetic it is to like them, I get angry, which is why I don't mention it.

I'm so very defensive over them it's better I keep my mouth shut

Don't know about you, but I can think of a few uses for him!!!! As a matter of fact, I could use him right about now!!

Same here Mich.

If someone told me they don't like Coldplay, then fine. But if they start slagging off the boys (my experience is that Chris and Jonny are the members who get the most shit thrown @ them by fecking idiots) then I get really pissed off.

Normally I tell the sorry fellow to f*ck off.

Hmm.. I'm kind of surprised to hear about this "not cool" in England stuff... In Romania they are liked by just about everyone. I know all kinds of people who only listen to rock music and well.. just simply deem themselves to be cool.. :lol:who went to their concerts last year, either in Vienna or Budapest. And that's saying a lot. Usually, Romanians don't make such efforts for bands that are not Metallica or some other band that is generally known as cool... People that I know and the ones that I've talked to about Coldplay say they mostly appreciate both the music and the lyrics. To sum it up, I would say that Coldplay is known here as a band who creates a mature "smart" kind of music, from lyrics to music.

Oh my gosh, I'm glad I didn't get made fun of for MY first boy-band favorites, the Bay City Rollers...that might have scarred me for life...

(now I've really aged myself)

I;ve honestly never expierenced it in that way, anyone I tell about my obsession here goes oww coldplay they're pretty cool :nice: most of them start hummng VLV after that :P

but I did know about the uncoolness of coldplay in the UK, their about to get to the point where they're so uncool, it's cool again :P

that actually happens right here on this forum too :(

At my ripe age of 46, sometimes I kinda feel that the younger fans here think it's weird someone in their 40's are so into this band and a certain someone cough cough Martin, cough.

My 16 yr old daughter thinks they have a few good songs, and my 14 yr old son, say's Mom your obsessed??? Why cause I play their cd's over and over in the car when they are in it?? Naaaaaaaaaaaa. LOL. I drive in my car alone everyday for long periods and I pop one in listens to the whole thing then pop another cd in and so on. Do I like this band??? Naaaaaaaaaa. LOL

I'm so very defensive over them it's better I keep my mouth shut

Me too, even tough I try not to overreact and be calm enough to rebate their usually stupid assertions about them :dozey:

luckily I'm surrounded by people who like them or don't know them and get to know them because of me
