So listening to the new Metric album inspired this list.

 

Haven't done a top 10 list for a while so here is another one. I downloaded Metric's new album Fantasies tonight and am enjoying it. The past few weeks I've been obsessed with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Portishead released one of the best albums of 2008 last year. Stars are an awesome band. I was on a Fleetwood Mac kick a few weeks back. What do these all have in common? They all feature females singing lead vocals.

For the longest time I only liked "rock music" with male vocalists. But over the past few years that has changed. While Avril Lavigne and Evanessence still makes me want to jump off a bridge, the use of female vocals on albums can have a great positive impact.

This list is of my personal favourites, so thats why people like Janis Joplin or Patti Smith are ignored. And like my previous list, this is not in order.

I suppose some find her voice sort of annoying, but I think it's quite beautiful in a unique way.

You should also check out Bat For Lashes... she has a good voice too.

It's funny to see this thread, as I have often thought that there is room for a huge rock band to have a female lead singer. There's just not many out there.

 

By the way, I have always liked No Doubt and Gwen Stefani. They have always had their own unique sound and are the closest to the above description, in fairly recent years, that I can think of.

Laura Marling has a great voice. Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes) too. But Beth Gibbons is the queen for me.

Norah Jones is amazing even though her music gets dry pretty fast.

 

I also must admit enjoying Colbie Caillat whenever she's on the radio.

In all seriousness Marketa Irglova is a terrific singer and musician. She should be on the Top 10 List.

Bjork? Anyone? The most amazing female voice ever.

Yeah, Bjork has an amazing voice.

You can't deny Amy Winehouse has a great voice, no matter her personal life. I like Jenny Lewis' voice too.

They said their next album is ready to be released, and they just want to find a better label.

 

There is no release date yet, but you can listen to one of it's tracks, called

Long Live The Fallen World, which themselves made avaliable for free.
