Viva la Vida tour shows too stagey?

Featured Replies

I went to their VLV show, and loved it. But does anyone think it's too stagey? It's a thought that's been at the back of my head for a while. It's almost like a pop concert with a huge production behind them - butterflies, lasers, balloons, giant video wall, stage a/b/c.... Chris even moves around the stage the same way for most of the shows.

It's a great show and possibly the most fun I've had, but still....Would u prefer their 'older' type shows? Without the fluff, and just straightforward (soft) rock gig? Do the props distract from the music? I was comparing Coldplay's older live stuff & other bands and kinda think so.

Honestly I think considering how big they are at the moment and that they are on a huge tour I think their production is quite low key, some screens, some butterflies and ballons and a brilliant light show (which they always had). It's obviously different to play venues with 2000 pax or venues for over 20 000.

I don't think the props are distracting, they add so much excitement and build a great athmosphere in the whole thing :nice:

Taking some butterflies home, going crazy when Chris and Jonny do the IMP dance or bursting one of the yellow balloons adds a lot more to the whole experience. You get out of there feeling like you were part of something special, and not only stared at 4 guys wearing black for almost 2 hours :nice:

i wish i saw all that it seems like great fun, so to answer your question, no, i dont think the shows are too stagey.

I will be going in July (free CD too!) and I hope to see all of that. I think at the least they want their audience to have the same experiences, I don't think it's wrong to do the same things in each city, like a Broadway show. What's the difference?

and the prob with this is???:wink3::sneaky: that`s about all I remember DOING at the show!

 Nothing wrong with it Kels, i just think the new stage and the general setup has a lot of entertaining stuff.... IE Guy & Chrissy's super tight viva pants :sneaky:

Honestly I also dont think that their Viva La Vida Tour has that much production.I believe their X&Y tour had more production.

I wished Chris would sit down at the piano and calm down a little more -- put some more real emotion in the songs. He only really does that for The Scientist and Fix you these days, imo. Besides that I haven't got that much of an issue.

Favorite tour was Arobtth. It was all about the music and not the "show". Not a fan of the crazy dancing and gymnastics.

Granted there's a lot of pyrotechnics now compared to their AROBTTH tour, but they still do put on a good show. Like you said, you enjoyed yourself at their gig. And that's what a concert is about, good music AND a good experience.

I strongly prefer their older shows. I like the type of show where they just get up there and play like they did. Yes some lights and the occasional effect is nice, but they are getting a little too "stagey" yes, I strongly agree with you.

I just feel bad to hear that people think it's too stagey because they try to put their all into the shows.

I do think that Chris moves around too much.If he would stop running around so much then the other things wouldn't be distracting.

Also if they didnt have any special effects then some people would complain that they didnt get their money's worth

It’s a tricky mix, I know. I do wish Chris would stay put a little more….then he could sing properly and not be out of breath so much.

I can seriously foresee in few years Chris suddenly "maturing" and being more clam and musical onstage. I could see him saying he was just too cray at this time and that he's grown up a lot or something.

I don't know why, but it just seems like someday he'll look back and think he's been kind of too crazy on stage these days.

No.

Is this your first time going to a concert?

Totally agree.

I personally thinks Chris has sang really well. It's not easy singing and running around being hyper at the same time.

Chris could have just sat and sang properly as you wished. Not running around creating the ambience for us and that will get people starting threads like, 'Viva La Vida tour shows no difference than a boring orchestra?'

He needs to stop moving all crazy and put more emotion to the songs and who ever said X&Y tour was more stagey is out of their mind!!!!!!!!! no offence!haaha

i agree with both sides of this.

sometimes yeah i wish they would settle down just for a couple of songs, but then i love it when they put they're energy in it.

In their defence I think they are having alot of fun with all their new props. I guess they love the atmosphere. I think they have loosened up alot. Especially Guy. He used to kinda just stand in one spot but now he's moving around and singing.

Basically I'm just really of proud with what they achieved.

Ooo also I think they are starting to feel the pressures of mainstream you know? They have so many new fans and I think they want to expand the show and try make everyone happy? but of course that isn't possible because there will always be one unhappy person.

:)

Oh and i hate how every show is the SAME....I mean during certain songs they do the same thing at all the shows.....everything is staged i hate that!

Why cant they just do what they want...if Guy wantd to move to 5 steps to the right why cant he just do it without anyone knowing hes gonna do it! No idea if that made sense!! haha

well, personally I also prefer gigs where bands just go up and play but as I said you can't really do this in big places...I mean I am dreading the U2 gig in August...just because their show this year is much more about the stage then anything else.

However I do think Coldplay shows are pretty unique just because the energy level they have are amazing!!!!!

guys seriously bands cannot afford to not stage concerts these days. especially if they are big. something could go wrong and then people will criticize and then everything will be chaotic. coldplay always put in a little extra something everywhere they go. they have a lot of things to do! i mean come on its not like you are travelling the world doing a show almost every single night. you would be dead tired.

the main thing is at least they are touring! they love their fans and as I said every single show they will always add in a little personal touch that's different to any other show.

deal with it and appreciate the hard work.
