What should I choose?

I decided to learn to play an instrument. Which one?

Basicly my mom told me that she doesn't like me sitting around the whole day, on the computer doing nothing, which I totally don't I do stuff I hang around with my friends, go swimming, etc. So I tried to prove her wrong, that even if I do spend lots of time on the computer I actually learn new things everyday and especially when I come on here I meet lots of new people everyday and learn things about them and their countries/cultures/whatever and besides it's not like I just sit on coldplaying the whole time. There's also this other dumb thing she wants me to do, I have to get 40 community service hours in order to graduate, I have like 20. So she wants me to go volunteer somewhere and get like a 100, because it would look good on your college application and resume, but I totally refure to, because I think if your grades are high (mine are high) who the fuck would care how many hours did you spend helping out your community, I'm not even planning to stay here as soon as I graduate, for real I'm outta here. The second reason and I've been getting yelled at for mentioning that, I think it's kind of like fucking child labour, see when I go to my work place I get payed for doing my job, if I go to volunteer to an elementary school to help babysit little kids, I'm most likely to come home with a headache and a paper with a signature and number of hours I spent in that torture place, and maybe a 'thank you'. Don't get me wrong I love helping out people, one of my friends has a charity and I'm more than glad helping her out. But you shouldn't be forced into doing it. Also my mom told me that I'm probably getting dumber and dumber from day to day because I stopped reading as much as I used to, but I do, I haven't been reading as much lately because I'm trying to find a good book, instead of spending my time on some 'teen fiction'. Well she said it's better than nothing. I also used to paint before, my parents think I don't right now because once again I'm too lazy, but again not true, i have been drawing a lot lately I'm just trying out different kinds of arts. Oh yes, so back to why I was making this thread, I've always wanted to learn how to play an instrument, I've been in a school band before and I played the trombone lol, and I've also learned how to play some basic keyboard stuff too, but I'm pretty sure I don't remember any of it. So I wanna take lessons, but I'mnot sure what kind of instrument I want to play. I was thinking I wanna try either piano/keyboard or guitar either acoustic or bass.

So yeah what are your thoughts? And I'm sorry if you fell asleep while you were reading all that.

The enter key is quite helpful; you should split that up into paragraphs lol.

You're 100% wrong about colleges only looking at your grades. If you don't do community service you won't get in anywhere. If you look at the kids who get into the most selective schools in America, they ALL do tons of community service.

I'd learn guitar. Piano is too expensive unless you already own one.

Well, I play the guitar, and it's awesome, but for some reason I'd recommend learning to play the piano. I played it for nearly 8 years, and it's such a beautiful and brilliant instrument- plus it's pretty easy to learn. But the guitar is also awesome (both acoustic and electric), so I'm not really much help. :P

Next time I will, yeah I know I won't, that's I do do them I can probably get a lot in the next 3 years, I'm just saying I hate doing them. A lot.

Learning the piano will help you learn other instruments more easily...it's a great starter instrument.

Seriously, how many people can play the guitar? And don't say "How many can play it WELL?" back at me. Learn the uke! It's travel-sized, and you can pull it out just about anywhere and people automatically give you attention. It's awesome for meeting people. o.O

Lol I always do that, when people ask me for help.

I'd say piano, and then guitar, because piano really helps with learning to play other instruments and learning music theory.

The thing I hate about piano is that mine is REALLY loud. I can't play it while my parents are home. I have to use my stupid keyboard :(

Acoustic guitars can get pretty loud too :\

Especially with an echo...like there is in my house, so I can't play it at night even when I learned a new song, like I did just now...

piano is a good instrument to start with, as it really helps when you try to learn another instrument.

I play bass, and learning songs with good funk grooves that use alot of popping and slapping techniques are always fun!

There's always the piano accordian;)

odd man out here, but i always favoured the French horn.:)

It is nice, but it's impractical as a solo instrument. Unless you're joining an orchestra, I wouldn't buy one.

With the piano you can show off your skills to friends and family. Who knows, maybe even record an album one day?

Plus French Horns are EXPENSIVE. So much metal in those things.

If I had the chance I'd learn the piano. It's such a beautiful intrument. You can play so many songs with it and so many different styles. I work in a music store with mainly pianos and when people test those pianos I get so jealous, because I want to learn it, too. But it is too expensive:(

I play the saxophon myself. An instrument I can highly recommend...or the clarinet...or flute..:wacky:

so, choose the piano!

Trumpet. :wacky:

Well, is this only a decision between guitar and piano, or would you like us to reommend other instruments as well? If it's only between those two, I would say to go with piano.

Ukulele is a beautiful instrument. I say choose ukulele over guitar!

Ukeleles are so cliché these days

I have the same problem to be honest, I want to learn an instrument but it's a bit of a commitment to buy one
