Camille would you have supported Bush making this speech to the kids? To clarify, I wouldn't support any president making this speech, its not their place. Even if my favorite person gets elected in 2012, I would be against him giving a speech to school kids.

Obama is getting national government far too involved in public school affairs with this speech.

We need more passive action like the No Child Left Behind Act.

How about just do away with public schools, than kids my actually get an education.

I don't see anything wrong with the speech persay... he's just speaking and encouraging kids to be what they want to be and do well in school. We're ranked 25 in the world I think, as far as our education system is concerned.

What I do/maybe/slightly see what the hoopla is, the 'dicussion questions' after the speech. I mean, yes.. possibly if they are older (High School) I can see a very good discussion being brought about.. but the little kids? I dont know if this is too heavy of a message?? I dunno...

if Bush were giving the speech... I would think he's being fake about it. BUT, had you asked me this same question prior to 9/11, I would say kudos to him as well. I can't imagine other wise.

America's future is one filled with obese people who make sure to wash their hands so they don't get sick. Then they fill out a form to receive a government subsidy.

Exciting!

A lot of the school children's parents sent letters to the school asking them to not let their child watch this speech, I think it is scary that we are divided so much, and people don't trust our leaders in such a way to where we keep our children from watching simple motivational speeches in an educational environment.

The education speech was pretty mundane. I do not see what the fuss was all about.

They made a huge fuss when Bush Sr spoke....

I don't want any politician speaking to the kids, that's all.

Same.

MY SCHOOL IS WATCHING THE SPEECH TOMORROW WOOT WOOT.

This is going to be pretty comical listening to people discuss it.

:awesome:

Really, guys. REALLY. what was the big deal??

MrNick, you asked earlier if people would be OK if GWBush gave such a speech. I could not have disagreed more with him on policy issues, but yes, I would have been ok with him giving a speech to students on their return to school.

The majority of the speech is him emphasizing the need to stay in school, do well, graduate and go to college. He does bring up policy with No Child Left Behind, but he talks about how to fix where that law went wrong (and speaking as a former teacher, believe me, that law did go wrong).

I understand that you don't agree with his policies, but to me, if the President of the United States is going to speak to children encouraging them to stay in school and pursue a college degree, that is not a bad thing. However divided we may be ideologically, it's a shame that the office of the presidency no longer commands the respect it used to. And by respect, I don't mean blind following. It used to be possible for people to RESPECTFULLY disagree.

good points Jenflor. I definitely cannot see how anyone can take offense to a speech telling kids the importance of education.
