Bliss Release by Cloud Control wins the prestigious Australian Music Prize - AMP.

not my pick but a very deserving winner!

^Yay for Cloud Control! Who else was nominated?

  • Author

^^

everything else that was decent from last year except Parades.

it was really a battle between Bliss Release and Innerspeaker and the panel went for cloud control.

Interesting, do you think it was because Cloud Control's album is a little more accessible?

no it was because Innerspeaker won the J Award and the AMP can't be seen to be agreeing with triple j. sorry to sound like a conspiracy theorist but thats the reality of it.

alright we've had another decent australian release this week. Sparkadia's second album The Great Impression is simply amazing. it is solid from beginning to end and wouldn't be surprised if this goes down as the best aussie album of the year.

^Awesome, I'm so excited to get my hands on that one and give it a listen!

I'm also hoping I'll be able to go and see them in April.

Its released in 2 days. Streaming in full through fb or twitter. Tbh I have only heard three songs and it's decent but I love the rawness of LP1. Seeing Alex Burnett perform next Friday too so I have a week to learn the tunes.

Suppose I should give my roundup of Future Music Festival. Gypsy and the cat impressed. Tame Impala were a bit sluggish but I think having it pour down didn't suit their music. Art vs science were fantastic live but I'll never enjoy studio recordings of their songs. Kesha was abominable, cannot sing live. No talent. Mark ronson was awesome- he got the lead singer up from miike snow and played 'animal'. I lost my shit. Bang bang bang was incredible. The presets were average, new stuff doesn't sound too inspiring. Mgmt were ok, not very engaging... Too many people talking though all their songs. I enjoyed how their newer material sounded live. Zane Lowe was a great act, DJing up a storm. Crowd loved it. Then pendulum. Holy shit. They are amazing live. They played the ABC news theme. Shit lost again. Chemical Brothers closed the night with a great visual and light show which was amazing. A definite highlight. Really got into their music and the new album sounded great live. All together a horribly wet and muddy and cold festival buy bloody good fun!!!

ahhhhh sooooo jealous you got to see chem bros. i have all their albums and i LOVE all their albums but freken uni got in the way :(

this new sparkadia album gets better with every listen. the story behind it is quite inspiring too. with how all his band mates deserted him and how he did it basically all on his own.

Haha, epic review Alex!

I don't mean to rub it in your face or anything Jamie but I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work at Future and at the Chem Bros sideshow in Brissy so I got the pleasure of hearing them live twice. I only got to see the visuals on the second night and they were awesome! I'm sure if I'd know them better I'd have loved the performance even more. I must admit though, I found it a bit odd that at both shows I was working they didn't utter a single word to the crowd :/

well i dont think they have microphones do they? they just stand behind their decks and mix. a bit like daft punk just without the suits.

i think its really just the new generations of DJ's who shout stuff to crowd to get them going. the older DJ's depend on the quality of their music to get some atmosphere.

EDIT: i would've been really jealous had you guys seen them at their sideshows. a 1hr festival set doesn't really do them justice. same with LCD whose festival sets feel very unsatisfying.

^Couldn't see if they had microphones, but I guess not. Interesting, I just assumed that anyone who plays has a microphone haha. They didn't really need it though, the crowd was going crazy anyway. I thought the atmosphere was just as good at the festival as at the sideshow, but I can't properly judge not knowing the music that well.

Elbow and the vaccines the only two from three leaked I love. Add Coldplay and Arctic Monkeys to that (who I both believe will be headlining) and I am FUCKING THERE!!!!!!

coldplay? i seriously don't think so mate. why would a band capable of selling over 60 000 tickets in sydney want to play at a 30 000 capacity indie music festival? i think it would be detrimental for the organisers to throw that much money at a band like coldplay. i know fuji rock is often a good indicator but their headliner never comes to splendour, last year it was muse, year before it was oasis. the same will happen with coldplay.

you need to look a little further down the fuji rock lineup to get a better idea of who might be heading our way. thats where the arctic monkeys come in as a very likely co-headliner. wouldn't be surprised to see Incubus headlining one of the nights. beady eye seem very very likely from the summer sonic lineup.

what ever happens this will be one helluva line up. but i'm upset that AF won't be headlining. it just seemed so perfect!

so i went out and bought the Sparkadia album today. if you had told me just a few weeks ago that i would be going out and buying the new sparkadia the day it comes out i would've laughed at you. but i was so very impressed by what i heard off their website i had to go grab it asap. the album sounds better with every listen. the vocals are impeccable, the lyrics are moving and it is really hard to believe that it was all made by just one man. this is an album well worth getting excited about! there are bits of dappled cities there and a hint of leader cheetah too. i can really see this album going places in the UK, i can see that part of the world really relating to the sounds on the record.

Who's the third rumour?

I probably can't afford to go, but if Elbow and Arctic Monkeys come out I am NOT missing out!! Of course I'm disappointed about Arcade Fire too. But I'm not disappointed the festival will be back in Qld :awesome:

I'm so excited to get my hands on a copy of the Sparkadia album! I tried to buy it this morning but couldn't find any so I ordered a signed special edition of the album off the JB website. :D

Also, just got back from seeing Tim Minchin, my god he puts on one hell of a show! And his piano skills are beyond phenomenal. My stomach and facial muscles were aching by the end of the show, in fact I think I'm still on a bit of a high. He was so good, and the inclusion of the orchestra was really the icing on the cake. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but I'd highly recommend seeing his live act. The man's insane, but completely brilliant.

watching channel v's coverage of Future. so far they've shown Mark Ronson (had no freken idea how popular he was haha) kesha (highlight was her pash with jane gazzo) art vs science (hollywood is still their only decent song) tame impala (wrong festival, too many drunk people not enough stoned people) the presets (good to know they're still alive) zowie (who? ) and zane lowe (why?)

this coverage is much much better than their BDO broadcast which has become abysmal. it isnt saturated with shit interviews and gimmicks and they're actually showing acts people give a shit about. and they're showing several decent songs from each act, at least 3 or 4 hits in each case.

well 2hrs left lets see how the rest is.

ok the rest of it

MGMT (seems like they've improved a lot, they're no longer trying too hard) dizzee rascal (i can't stand him but i gotta appreciate the fact that he is genuinely talented) pendulum (every song sounds the same but fuck they rock live) and of course the amazing chem bros, now the hosts said "this is the hour where we play the chem bros and then they went on to play onto play about 2mins of the performance. weird!

and watching 10 000 people going nuts to the ABC news theme made me crack up laughing LMAO!!

i'm amazed at how quickly future music has become one of the biggest festivals in the country. it had a bit of a hiccup in 2010 but they really stepped it up this year.

I think the fact that BDO this year was more alternative than usual would have increased demand for future tickets. It definitely did in my case, anyway.

Saw Sparkadia on Friday night. I think you're right Jamie, this is one of the albums of the year, it's so delicate but grandiose. And it was played pretty well live. Operator please supported, and they were terrible. Really enjoyed Alex Burnett and band's performance, the old songs plus some new favourites were played so that made for a quality setlist. Ended up meeting him afterwards, got a photo plus my friends and I were invited to the Ivy League after party with Midnight Juggernauts, Operator Please, Cloud Control. I was too drunk to be star struck... Quality night though.
