Haha, so they must be really low on numbers in Brisbane because not only are they offering half price tickets now, but they've sent out an email saying that every existing ticket holder can bring another person for FREE.

Which is a little unfortunate for us ticket-holders, but great for our friends :P

Anyone hitting up Wombats sideshows?

i think the over saturation of music fests in australia is finally taking its toll. it seems to have reached capacity this summer. so expect to see plenty disappear over the next few years and remaining to become even bigger.

Yep. They even cancelled Homebake 2011.

I'm not going to Wombats, im overseas at the time. SHATTERED. And might miss the drums too.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Wombats, but overseas trip > Wombats sideshow

I may or may not be seeing them, I'll have to see how the monetary situation is next tuesday.

Hmm that's a shame, how many have they cancelled this year? Apart from Homebake.

I think I like the vibe at small festivals better. Any predictions on what could be cut?

It's NZ, and I go there all the time. I did consider going up to Brissie for the first sideshow

Shit venues in each city btw they're all seats!!

^Haha, do it!

And that's not true, the Tivoli is completely standing room. It's a pretty good little venue actually

:\ i should've done some better research before i posted that but off the top of my head i can remember a great easter weekend festival we had here in sydney called Great Escape then of course you have the V Festival. but at the same time you have festivals like bdo and good vibes having to basically throw away tickets.

the most successful festivals seem to be the ones that are aimed a niche market. like Laneway is almost purely indie, Soundwave is all heavy, Stereosonic is all techno and so on.

critical question. will splendour become bigger than BDO one day soon?

Good question.

In some ways I hope so, and in other ways I don't.

this.

So arcade fire announce a world tour that puts them out of touring Australia until at least next summer.

if we have to wait any longer than that i might consider not going if it's a lot of money. seeing as i hated the suburbs...

I'm honestly starting to forget that album with all the great new music coming out at the moment. But I am sure a tour announcement will get me back into it...

Well that brought my day down a little.

But I don't really care right now, Good Vibes was SO much fun!

Friendly Fires were phenomenal (I've never seen dancing quite like that) and Phoenix were MINDBLOWING. Plus I actually got to hug the lead singer. It was awesome :awesome:

Question: what was everyones favourite Australian artists that released material in the last 10 years?

love what The Panics produced through the 2000s as well as Silverchairs Diorama and Young Modern. A&J Stone have impressed on all their EPs and albums. i have great admiration for Cog who have been at it for about 10yrs now and have produced 2 great albums. I dont know too much about john butler trio but what i have heard i have always been impressed by. there's no denying powderfinger's place in the annals of aussie rock.

Well for me, the "last ten years" really means the last 3 or so, because I wasn't really "into" the music scene before then and haven't really delved into the history of any Australian bands except Powderfinger, which says something in itself. I will say that I loved The Panics' "Cruel Guards", even though it was released not that long ago. Never been a huge fan of Silverchair but I know they've had a big influence on Australian music. For me, personally, I would probably say The Temper Trap and Cloud Control, even though I know they're very new to the scene (comparatively).

So what's been happening in Aus music?

Has anyone listened to the Art vs Science album? I don't think it's nearly as good as their EP, but perhaps I should listen to it more.

^I listened to it and didn't really like it much at all. But I haven't been a huge fan of their other stuff, though I did enjoy magic fountain.

i only like Hollywood by them. from what i heard from the J's of the new album, it sounds pretty average.

been hearing good stuff about Oh Mercy's album so i might give that a shot very soon. otherwise the year so far in aussie music has been very underwhelming.

splendour announced this morning. july 29, 30 and 31. that basically rules out arcade fire. full line up can be expected in the next 5 to 6 weeks.

First band confirmed for Splendour - The Vaccines
