January 21, 201016 yr A number of rock stars will join a veterans group on Thursday in calling for the closure of the United States's military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Coldplay, along with Nine Inch Nails co-founder Trent Reznor, Rosanne Cash (Johnny Cash's daughter) and Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello will join the effort via Twitter, linking up with a number of liberal groups, human rights groups and veterans organizations. Approximately 20 veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be visitng Capitol Hill Thursday to make the case to lawmakers. Meanwhile, on Twitter, the campaign said its aim is to make the Gitmo closure the number one trending topic (or most popular discussion subject) on Twitter today. The organizers, New Security Action and Vote Vets, say that the campaign coincides with the one-year anniversary of President Barack Obama's pledge to close Gitmo within a year of taking office. January 21, 201016 yr Maybe it's my pro-Gitmo bias speaking, but I can't stand it when bands like Coldplay get wrapped up in these political matters. I know they're strong supporters of Amnesty International, but I still don't think this is right. I love Coldplay, and I mean I love Coldplay one hell of a lot, but I'm not going to subscribe to every one of their political whims.

January 21, 201016 yr Im with you Corkus on about everything... I didn't mind that Chris Martin spread announced his political views, but one of the reasons that I don't like U2 as much is because of Bono and his political outbursts... By the way... I STILL LOVE COLDPLAY.
January 21, 201016 yr I think it's fab that bands etc try and get involved in things like this. If it gets causes a bit more attention then it's not doing any harm. It does kinda annoy me when people turn on celebs because of their views; political or otherwise. Everyone is entitled to their own views and opinions, even celebrities. As long as they're not forcing others to take those views, then I don't see the problem. That's not me picking on anything that anyone has already said in this thread btw ;)

January 22, 201016 yr Wasn't the closure of Gitmo one of Barack Obamas election pledges. I thought it was going to happen? With this in mind, is there really any point to trying to champion this cause, aren't there more pressing concerns these people can get behind? Like highlighting the dangers of filling your tax return in wrong and the deadly impact of the resulting fine. *shudders*
